I think it looks like Black Cockatoo too, but it's not. It's very deceptive.
Re: Misc Nature Photo's Thread
Being the newbie here, I was poking around the site to see what there was and stumbled onto this thread. Some of these pictures are simply stunning! There must be more than one professional photographer in the group.
Now, looking at this thread has caused me some problems. My wife was looking over my shoulder as I scrolled down all 61 pages and she suddenly started babbling that she wants to move to Australia! I told her she was about 30 years too late! .
I certainly can't top the nature/scenery pics that I've seen in this thread but here's my contribution:
Crossing Glen Canyon (southeastern Utah) a few years ago. This part of Utah is full of twisty canyons and gorgeous national parks. I've ridden this area several times and can't wait to go back for more. In my mind, it's the most beautiful area in the US:
Sunset, Capitol Reef National Park, Torrey Utah. Same trip as above:
Bryce Canyon National Park. On yet another two wheeled trip to Utah:
Storm clouds and wheat fields somewhere in Wyoming on the way to South Dakota:
McDonald Observatory, Davis Mountains in far west Texas. Nearest town if you're curious is Fort Davis, TX:
Tornado Wall Cloud, Childress, TX taken 42 years ago. It was an awesome sight as this rapidly spinning mass could be seen from miles away. Just after this picture was taken, tornadoes began to touch down in the dusty field not a 1/4 mile away. We got the heck out of there a fast as we could so no pics of any on the ground. Five tornadoes came out of this and kicked the crap out of the area:

Excellent shots there Wolfcamp, and the scenery is beautiful. Only thing is. Why are you all riding on the WRONG side of the road ?

Seems strange saying Black Cockatoo doesn't it, but if you really check them out when they're flying, you can see yellow in they're wings

Don't really know except to say that most of the old westerns (Roy Rogers, Hopalong Cassidy, etc) were filmed in the hills and mountains in southern California.
You got my curiosity up so I googled the question. Here's a quote from Wikipedia:
"Early Westerns were mostly filmed in the studio, just like other early Hollywood films, but when location shooting became more common from the 1930s, producers of Westerns used desolate corners of Arizona, California, Colorado, Kansas, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, or Wyoming. Productions were also filmed on location at movie ranches."
There are some extremely remote areas in Nevada that would make great locations. In 2009, I rode through the middle of Nevada on my way from California to Texas. There was one stretch of highway that had no gas station for 200 miles. Fortunately the ST1100 I was riding had a 7.5 gallon tank and got 42 to 45 mph so no worries. If I did that on my Bandit today I think that I might take along a small container of gas just in case.
The route that I took across Nevada skirts a very high security military installation known as Area 51. Nut jobs in the states (of whom there are many) somehow figured that because this secret installation is hidden by the mountains and thus can't be seen from the highway, the government is hiding something. What you ask?.. why UFO's of course! The area is a magnet for UFO conspiracy theorists from all over the world. The locals have even taken commercial advantage of this by renaming the highway through the area to this:
One of the VERY few settlements along the Extraterrestrial Highway is the town of Rachel. They have played the UFO angle to the hilt. Humans 98, Aliens ?:
I love the kooky little bar/general store they have (the only one):
One of westerns that was on TV in the 60's was called "Bonanza". I assume you folks down in Oz got it as well. It was filmed in Northern California in the Sierra Nevada Mountains not too far from the border with Nevada. I rode that area back in 2004. One of my favorite pictures of the area was taken along Ebbets Pass of a beautiful little mountain lake:
There are mesas and buttes all over the western US but I don't really know where any specific westerns were filmed using them as a backdrop.
Hope I didn't wander too far off the topic of nature/scenery with a few of these pics.

I expected to see Ben ride on down to the waters edge on his horse. Lovely countryside.

It was actually a couple of Rainbow Lorikeets, but the sun shining through them completely changes the colouring.

Nice one Chris. I like the moon in that phase more than a full one. Seems to give it better depth. ??

Typical Yamaha rider, 'mooning' everyone! Nice photo though Chris.
Just spotted some King Parrots on a tree outside, unfortunately I couldn't get close enough before they decided to take the party next door.
This turned out to be an interesting one King , Queen and the jester (where did he come from?)
... and another action shot.
