Ok, but now I get to add some commentary (thanks Cam):

Yamaha AT125 - generator and electric start! Probably weighed more than the Bandit. But fuel was 10c/litre back then and it got me to school and back for less than the cost of a packet of .22s. Laughing
Honda CB350 Four - beautiful sound with Jardine 4 into 1. Then Honda brought out the CB400F and my CB350F suddendly looked like last century's four.
Honda XL500 - piece of shit pale (first gear too high for trail work, top gear too low for road work). Should have followed my heart and bought the XL350 trailie and converted it into a single cyclinder roadster with an underslung pipe - they looked great.
Yamaha XS750 triple - fabulous sound from a 3 into 1 - even an old fart came up to me a told me it sounded sweet (and he hated motorbikes!)
Honda XL185s (which I still have) - always on hand for a bush bash. Now 27 years old and starts first kick every time. Great go cart motor.
VZ 800 M50 Boulevard - good learner legal bike (in the AC only) to get me back into the saddle. Got a great trade-in on the Bandit.
Bandit 1250s - no need to say anything on this forum! bounce

  • honda 125 semi trail (kick start) ... (wish I took pics of it)
yamaha SR500 single (with a decompression lever .. and only a kick start) (wish I took pics of it)
    Kawasaki 250 (money problems)
Kawasaki GPZ900R 1986 (faithful steed) (picture of this somewhere else on this forum)
Suzuki Bandit 1250SAK9 loved it but I was coming into some big bills like rego & 24k service and suzuki were offering to pay the rego on a new bike,

so I bought one ..
  • Suzuki GSX1250FAL0 love this too

In order of ownership;
Started my motorbike love affair with a 1981 Honda XL 185s
1982? Honda CB 400 2 cyl
1985 Honda XL 600. Had that for years and even travelled from Canberra ACT to Albany WA around the coast and via Ayres rock once. Great trip!
1995 Honda NS 650 Dominator. Good off road touring bike, wish I had it on the above trip.
1997 Honda XR 400. First of the new XRs. Great fun!
1993 Honda NS 650 Dominator. Not as good as the other one.
2008 Suzuki 1250 Bandit. My first non Honda! No real reason that I always had Hondas, just seemed to work out like that.
Could only ever afford one bike at a time unfortunately

Started on a Silver blue 900SS Brand new
Then got a Guzzi Lemans III to go with it.
Moved out of home then realised they were making me poor, but happy so sold the Guzzi.
Later sold the 900SS fof a 996SPS again new (still have it)
Got a GSF1250SAL0 in April this year on a novated lease.
Not many bikes but a lot of fun.

A very short list for me

KLE 500 - Good for the taller learner and had excellent turning circle. It was almost like cheating doing the MOST test on it
GSX650FU - A reluctant forced upgrade, as my KLE was written off. Still, it was fuel injected and served me well. First bike I rode to PI for the GP.
GSX1250FA - Restrictions up and upgrade time. Styled like the 650 but with no LAMS restrictions. Haven't ridden it on as many long rides as I would like to, but hopefully that will change.

Well, an even shorter list for me:

- TGB 50cc poor student days. Max speed of 60km (downhill) and grannies could walk past me up a hill
- 1998 Honda CA250 Rebel. Underpowered and not much to look at but it was a hand-me-down
- 2010 GSX1250FA

Great variety of rides mentioned by all, I got bitten at 14 when spending many weekends trying to get a mates old Yammy 2 cyl 2 stoke going, after what seemed liked months of tinkering, tweaking and pushing, the bastard fired up on me heading down a hill one day, the only problem was I never rode a motorcycle before...whoops, I was bitten and so it began, trail bikes such as DR250, 400, Yamaha 400, then onto the road when I was by law able to get a licence. Roadies were;
Yamaha XS250 (new to learn this road riding caper!)
Kawasaki Z250
Yammy 100cc something stroker
76 Z900, 1062 fat kit loaded with goodies to get 125HP at the rear wheel, spaghetti frame needed significant work after a serious punt back along the Great Ocean Road with my brother ~ nothing like watching the centre top frame from the head stock move a couple of inches from side to side as your grinding...
82 Z750 standard (what a let down from the 9, needed to be sensible)
80 Z650
82 GS850
86 1000RX
2010 GSX1250FA
Spent a couple of years here and there with no ride, had to be in a cage Sad
I'm sure there's shite loads of experince and questionable two wheel invesments made amongst my fellow forum members, along with the brilliant bargains of course. I'll get my brothers list one day as the prick spent most of his early working life as a dink! Is a good list!

Cheers to all, Thof santa

Post  b12mick Wed 08 Dec 2010, 12:24 pm

In the 14 (nearly 15) years I've been licenced I've owned 4 bikes, all Suzuki's.

GN250 - Piece of shit, but it was the best piece of shit I could afford.
GR650 - A slightly better piece of shit, it only cost me $100 after trading in the GN250. I owned it for 4 years and sold it for $500 not going.
GSX600F - I loved this bike. When I upgraded to the Bandit I kept it and tried, unsuccesfully, to convince my wife to keep it for her first real bike. She didn't like it, so I sold it to my sister who then traded it in on a VTR1000, bitch.
GSF1200S - Bought it brand new in 2002. It's now got just over 60,000km on it. Not bad considering for 3 years it only got used to commute the 12km to and from work. I was devasted on the 4th May 2004 when I very nearly killed it. But, the insurance company didn't write it off and repaired it as good as new.

After riding many different bikes over the last 8 years, I've come to the conclusion that I will get rid of the Bandit when it or I fall apart.

Post  1952 Wed 08 Dec 2010, 5:03 pm

First bike - a fixed gear pedal bike with 12 inch spoked wheels - I was 5 years old.
Second bike also had to be pedalled - but it was fitted with a 4 speed Sturmey-Archer rear hub with intergrated hub brake - I kept snapping it by inputting too much torque up some steep grades.

Real Bikes

Suzuki 100 - Second-hand. Still remember vividly the first night I got it up to 60mph (indicated) on what is now the Monash Freeway in Melbourne - IT CAUGHT ON FIRE - smoke poured from the exhaust for about 10 mins.. and then it ran BETTER than ever ..sewing machine smooth at 60 mph from then on. The exhaust was clogged with excess 2-stroke oil. I rode it around Melbourne for 12 months without a clutch because Pete Stevens at Port Melbourne gave me seven wrong replacements! I wrote to Suzuki in Japan and got a reply 2 years later! - by which time I had moved on to a:

Suzuki 185 - new. It was electric start and reliable. I probably would have held onto it for years except a close friend at the College I was at got a new Yamaha on an excellent deal and convinced my wife it was the bike I needed 'to keep up with the traffic'! So I got a:

Yamaha RD350 - Wow and double wow! affraid This was one hot 2-stroke. Only bike I've ever 'monoed' [accidently one wet night changing into second]. I reckon it would it would still keep up with the Bandit. Had an accident on it that knocked me out and put me in hospital - thank you full-face Shoei for saving my life! - it was fixed and back to better than new, but I had to sell as we were moving overseas (Tasmania) and I needed the money. 3 years later a:

Yamaha 400RD - second hand. OK - but I wasn't keen on the oxidised alloy wheels. First bike I did 160 kph on - and two days later discovered the tyres were at 18 pounds pressure! Oops! Coming back to the Mainland I was able to convince my wife I needed a more substantial machine, so traded up to a:

Suzuki GS850 - shaft drive heaven. I thought I was King of the Road. No more two-stroke oil smell. No more oily chains. Had a few nice rides around northern Tasmania before we were on the Princes of Tasmania and making our way to Adelaide. I was leading on the Suzuki and my wife was following with the children and caravan in the Tarargo. My first long ride and it wasn't too bad except for powerful cross-winds in a couple of places. 6 weeks after arriving I was wiped out by a Jim's Mowing guy pulling a trailer who turned across in front of me from behind a cement mixer he was following. 16 days in hospital and some impressive leg scars. Scared me off bikes because I was not speeding, not drinking, and was wearing proper protective gear. Bike was a write-off and I didn't replace it - put the insurance and the compensation into our first bit of real estate. 25 years later a:

Suzuki Bandit 1250 SA Nice, very nice and nicer than nice because I only have to ride when the sun shines and the roads are sweet. Not lots of kilometres yet, but 100% enjoyment. Very Happy
