Harley .The past the present ,its all the same .
There is a new add on T.v (S.E. Qld ) for a Harley dealership in Mackay .(Mining town now ). They show various Harley's with a sale pitch.
Nothing new about that but they all look really dated .Not just retro styling but old and dated .(like a mullet haircut ).
How long can the "look " last ? Volvo changed ,BMW changed its image but Harley seems stuck .Average Harley rider 45 years old
it Carnot last , can it ?
Its like watching "The Wiggles " when they are 60 doing the same act .
This is an observation not just a Harley "bash ".
Harley in Superbikes ,oh yes please .

Cannot understand why you would pay huge money for pre 60's technology, on a thing that will only idle at half throttle, won't go around corners, or stop and is just plain ugly

I have noticed a growing number of people talking about them like Jim has just done in his post / They seem to be losing that " in " image with a lot of people .

Gus got himself started
There ate a few manufacturers trading on the "Retro theme" and doing quite well.
HD have improved their engineering reliability out of sight in the last 10 years.
There are a couple that could live in my shed including the VRod (not HD powered)
They don't need to handle just like Bandits don't need to do 300km/h. They fulfill their design brief.
We do make fun of them though

Its just a name thing. A mate of mine wants to buy a softtail. I suggested a secondhand C109R with 2500ks on it. Immaculate bike with all the accessories. He wasn't interested just said he had his heart set on a Harley

LMAO
I just came from a 7 year stint on a cruiser {not harley} to a bandit..Im 46..the cruiser made me feel my age..the bandit makes me feel like Im 18 again...why o why did I wait so long...I see many cruiser riders of my age group..most are trying to capture the James Dean/Marlon Brando image....it certainly aint for the joys of riding... I've found that again on a humble bandit...and its fucking great

I think HD will stick with what has worked for them for so long. Their sales figures are the envy of all other manufacturers. Fact. 75% of their sales are at home. That is amazing. They have just recently moved into India. Wow. Probably China next. Would I buy one? No way. Would I buy one if I was an American living in America? Shit yeh. Have you seen some of their roads ?

I have a love hate relationship with Hogs. I like to own them but I don't like to maintain them or ride them in traffic. They are for cruising when you have extra time and money. Japanese bikes, whether we like it or not, are more reliable and better value for money but many will still ridicule those who ride a Japanese cruiser or classic instead of a Hog or a Triumph.

A mate of mine is currently touring around Tassie. He refers to "bike roads" and "Harley roads" sort of sums up the Harley to my mind. Lots of them up here in the NT. we have no corners.

I'm not a lover of Harleys, but not a hater either.
There is a Shit load of them out here. No corners.
For those who haven't ridden One, There not slow(Not fast either). But how many people Ride there machines at ten tenths. Tho it's not hard to out brake them. "shit brakes is not, is not a under statement". I manly ride behind them, so I don't end up with a 300+Kg haemorrhoid.
Harley's do have a place in this world, Just not in my shed.
They are way way over price.

I wouldn't mind a cruiser to take the Missus out on for weekend rides, but not as my only bike. I would miss cornering far too much.
I don't care what people ride, as long as they ride.

Re: Harley .The past the present ,its all the same .
If I went to the US for a "riding holiday" - I'd rent one but wouldn't own one.
My Dad had one in the early 90's. Yes - I thought it was the coolest thing but what detracted from the expereince was having to chain it to the concrete floor and turn the garage into a fortress - all to try to lessen the chance of it being flogged.

i suspect that a 500 kilometer a day for three days ride on a harley is not a pleasant experience

That says more about the riders and the "image" they paid for than the bikes themselves unless they were on WLA's or similar.Jimcoleman wrote:this i dont care what you ride as long as you ride things a bit of a crock i envited two mates with harleys on our march jenolan caves ride and they declined based on jap bikes were going i said are you for real " yup sorry" then mumbled some bullshit about the roads.

In the US they are a regular bike and 300 - 500 mile days are common.
That HD image from both sides of the fence seems to be particular to Australia.
Re: Harley .The past the present ,its all the same .
Your Harley riding mates might care what other people ride, but I don't. I agree with 4wa, it says more about the riders than the bikes.
They would get left behind on the corners and the straights against 1250 Bandits. But they would look cool parked outside the pub
