Guide to fixing scratched engine covers?
Hi,
I read some old articles of people (gus?) who had sanded and repainted their engine covers with a decent amount of success. Has anyone got a step by step guide on how to do it for a total noob? I am not mechanical at all so would even need steps down to removing the covers in the first place.
I have a GSX650F and GSF1250SA that both need it the 650 needs it more as it is heavily scratched, but the 1250 has some light scratching that needs doing. Do I need to try and get a colour match to existing, or should I respray it all?
Cheers,
Nick

You need to sand out the scratches by hand using a block (cork ?) and 80grit sandpaper DRy
Then go to 120grit and get rid of the 80 grit marks .Dry
Then 240 grit ,no block to get rid of the 120 marks Dry
600 grit repeat using water
1000 grit repeat using water
Paint straight on .
Of cause it depends on how deep the marks are , but they don't look to bad .
You could start off with a flat metal file and then 80 grit
One there look hardly marked ,start of with 600 grit
Then go to 120grit and get rid of the 80 grit marks .Dry

I would think about using heat resistant paint ( rattle can ) from a motor accessory store .
You could probably mask it up and do the job in place without taking anything off on some of that damage .

Heat resistant paint isn't necessary . Those small Holts cans work well and more choice of tints . Very light spray repeated every 60 seconds

Tint ,was the wrong word , should have said colour . Take the end cap into Supercheap and stand in front of about 20 shades of silver . I did post an exact colour code a long time ago ,i'll see if I can find it .

What do you mean by take the end cap in? is that something I can take off with ease?

I think Gus was referring to the small front cover on the R/h side .( easy enough to take off ) but I see Barry has found Gus's link for you .
Youtube can also help sometimes ........................, but as I said before doing it in situ can also be possible .

Re: Guide to fixing scratched engine covers?
i had similar scratches on my covers just like yours
i used a small fine buff while taking care and they came out, had to get more paint (enamel as it handles the heat better )
message me if ya want ok

I sanded and painted mine in situ. On the GSX the motor is black and a regular can of satin black paint was a very good match to the engine colour.

As others have said you can remove the small cover on the right side of the bike as there is little to no oil behind it

The bike shop has my bike to do the fairing replacement so they are going to find a colour matched paint for me
