Thanks mate.
I'm about 1/3 way through the card and I found a beauty that brought a tear to my eye.
Calf horizontal out of the water.
I'll post later but if its the best pic I ever take I'll be happy!

Well done Chris! The only subject I've found, less cooperative than birds are whales. I've got some excellent photos of spots where a whale was just a second before. Forget these silly bikes, we've got enough material for a nature calendar.
Re: Misc Nature Photo's Thread
I'm loving the standard of photos on this thread - better than an Attenborough documentary (I'm serious - I can hear his voice describing whales one minute and bees the next)!
Seriously though - keep them coming.

Chris that whale broaching is a 1 off. f/11 gave you great DOF and your shutter speed was perfect for the subject, consider yourself "A Photographer"
You see mate all you need is practice, you already have the eye for composition and the luck of the Irish.
Well done mate.

Still to complete the card but I think this is one of the better shots from the trip
Thats about 8 or 9m of whale calf out of the water
Shot from 200m away (legal distance) and cropped.

Such a pity that whale got in the road of a good landscape shot. Honostly Chris, send that shot into the newspaper office. I'm certain it is good enough to print. And make sure you get a large print done and mounted for your wall. Well done indeed.

Thanks Hammy. No macro needed there
The darling has trotted off to Hardly Normal this morning with a full size TIfF to see how it prints. If its OK I'll do a canvas.
I thought I'd send a smaller one to the boat company as the skipper was a top bloke.
I'm sure the local papers see those sort of shots regularly but I admit it brought a tear to my eye when I saw I had got it.
We're going back next year with 2 DSLR's. There are a few things I would do differently next time.
Thanks for everyone's compliments. Whales are something everyone should see. Its not expensive compared to what money we spend on other things. The size of them puts things into perspective.
Re: Misc Nature Photo's Thread
Chris in 1980 just before we got married whilst staying in Port Fairy we went down to the beach to the East of the Hopkins River mouth to photograph some birds and were treated to an incredible sight of a Mother Southern Right Whale and her calf about 50 meters from the shore and about 500 Meters further out Dad broaching all over the place like any proud Dad would.
I reported the sighting to Fisheries and Wildlife only to find out that we had photographed the FIRST return of those whales to that Coast and I still have the original Kodachrome Slides of the occurrence having refused to sell the original images to everyone who wanted them. I granted anyone the right to use copies of the slides but the originals have never left my sight.
