OK, Call me mad, but I've made a huge change. I have gone NIKON. Wanted something small, light weight, and, with Video. So, after lots and lots of reading and looking, I decided on the Nikon D5100. Great little camera. 16.2mp. Top sensor and processor. 1080 video. Ideal to throw in a tank bag. Here is one of the first shots with the cheap 55-300. Manual focus mode.

So what are your first impressions of "the dark side"?
Looks ok to me.
If you're ditching the 300mm let me know

Male Royal Spoonbill in full mating plumage caught collecting nesting material on Monday at the Edithvale Wetlands on Canon 7D with 500 f/4 L IS, ISO 400, Pattern Metering, f/5, 0 Step. 1/2000 Sec on the last rays of a setting sun (10 minutes later and the shot would not have been possible.)

I'll have to check the .nef but I think it was about f12 @ 1/60th

Re: Misc Nature Photo's Thread
Excellent beak detail. How close to the bird were you Chris. I know 500mm gives you good reach but how close anyway?
I will post exif info n future.

I've been on a little holiday, I'm pleased with the fruits of my early rising. I hope you'll excuse my posting 2 at once.
These were taken from the beach at Pottsville NSW.

I thought you had gone AWOL Peter.
Nice shots for re-entry
Re: Misc Nature Photo's Thread
Great images Peter!
Chris I was about 100 Meters away with foliage between me and the bird.
The 500 is God's lens as it covers most bases but needs perfect "long lens technique" to get the best out of it and that was mounted on a Gitzo Tripod and Wimberley MKII Gimbal Head $2500, good gear gets expensive and is unforgiving.
Junior with the 500.

Re: Misc Nature Photo's Thread
I have to say. If this is any indication of the standard of Nikon glass ( remember this is just a budget 55-300 lens ), then I hve no hesitation in saying that IMHO Nikon gives better still images than Canon. I know, big call. But I am just blown away by its quality. Sorry about the rave.

Which Backs up my theory that the 55 - 200 is a POS

Is it just me or has this photo thread lost its way .For the last few weeks i have not idea what you guys are talking about .What started as some
nice pics has turned into a professional camera site . Maybe we should have 2 section Armature and the rest .Impossible i know but you
guys have taken it to a level where the rest of us carnt compete .Great shots but have a look at that camera . You have scared me off ,i wonder
if im not the only one .
Ban the lens i think so we all are on an equal playing field .

Fair call Gus, but, it is all about sharing. Imformation, or a shot that you are proud of. Nothing to be scared off about. I know that this is a Bike forum and I love looking at others bikes and mods, I find your posts, with pics, to be very imformative and enlightning.

Come on Gus you have submitted some excellent shots.
I dont consider myself a pro and some of mine are shot with a point and shoot Casio!
The range of gear we have and the type of shots we each consider worthy makes this thread interesting.
I've learnt heaps and have some ideas on places I'd like to visit one day through this thread.
Go for a ride Gus and give us a landscape shot of you gold panning. It can be as simple as that and still be an interesting photo

I think it's just you Gus, there are obviously some serious amateurs here, eventually you look at that technical stuff if you are looking to perfect your images but the modern cameras do a pretty good job of taking care of that stuff in most circumstances. It's not a competition Gus, just enjoy the images and ignore the technical stuff it's just like bike riders discussing their mods etc. As mentioned elsewhere, if you take enough photos you will eventually get a gem. Now, drop that paint can, throw away that polishing cloth and take a bunch of shots!
Just to reassure you here is a non-scary photo of my camera "kit"

There’s opportunities there
How about a cool reflection of the Aprilia a polished part of the Bandit?
