Tyres: Feedback
First topic message reminder :
Can anyone with feedback about the different tyres they've run on their bikes post some info here. I dragged 6000km out of the originals but should've chucked them at 5000km. They seem to go good then all of the sudden start falling apart...
I put on a set of Michelin pilot road 2's (front and back) and they seem pretty good. Unfortunately I already got a puncture after only about 1000km and had to get it repaired. It was a big hole (part of a hacksaw blade went through the rear) and the repair job is good but it losses a few PSI each week.

Re: Tyres: Feedback
Thanks for the replies guys,
keenaviator - They're (36 & 42) infact the pressures recommended by the fellow who fitted the new tyres, and I've stuck with them atm.
Re-cycled - You are correct. Mine's actually a Canadian model that was a personal import, and its manual, as well as being bi-lingual, calls for 33-33 solo, and 36-36 two up. Curiously, it specifies 36-36 for both in Non-Canadian delivered bikes...
You've also got to consider the OE tyres those pressures were based on.
Not having seen one, for all I know a Michelin Macadam might have a very thick, rigid carcass, quite unlike the very pliant body of modern sports tyres. And that might mean they can be run at lower pressures whilst still giving acceptable wear.
Who knows. What I do know is that tyre pressures are something it's almost impossible to get good advice about. And being new to bikes, I decided to stick with close to the manufacturers specs for the first set.
Is it a truism for bikes, like cars, that OE recommended pressures are ridiculously low, to cater for bullshit like ride quality?
And yes, intro coming soon

Re: Tyres: Feedback
The label on the swingarm of my 02 1200 tells me to use 36 front and rear. My bike came new with Macadams, which were thrown away very early in their life and replaced with Metzler M1 front and Metzler M1 on the rear (which only lasted 6000km and was replaced with a Z4). The tyre fitter recommended 36 front and 40 rear on these tyres.
After a few years of running various Metzlers I switched to PR2's. The tyre fitter recommended 38 front and 42 rear.

Re: Tyres: Feedback
Stretched my OEMs (Dunlop Sportmax I think?) to the pre-Xmas 12K service, but the front had squared off, and the rear was well-and-truly in the wear bars so I should have replaced sooner.
Anyhow, after reading through this thread, I opted for the Pilot Road 3s.
The final total on the bill was rather eye-watering, but worth every cent and a great Christmas prezzie to myself and the Bandit.
I suppose that ANY new tyre would have led to an improvement in handling, but I can only comment on what I have on the rims, and I must say I can't remember the bike feeling this good even when brand new (Oct '10).
Happy days!

Let the elephant hunt begin anew!!
My front tire was pretty much shagged and yesterday, as I was getting ready to get a new chain and sprockets fitted, my rear decided that it didn't want all of its air inside the tire. So I ended up with 2 new tires. This time around, I've got Sportec M5s. Being the a new year, suppliers are still shut down and I couldn't get Roadtecs again. The Sportec have a pretty funny little gimmick, lean indicators on the rear.
After 4 runs of Mt Mac, I've managed to get down to the top of the elephants head . They don't last as long as the Roadtecs, but it's always good to try new things. As with all Metzelers I've had, they are good in the wet. Not that it's been raining much around Canberra lately.

I had these on one tyre set ago, I got 14000 out of them, and the front felt very slippery!

Pirelli Angel GT
So after 10000 km on the Dunlop Sportsmarts it was time for new tyres. Was gonna fit the Roadsmart 2 but decided on the Pirelli Angel GT, fitting the A tyre to the rear. I have only done about 300 km on them so far but initial impressions are they are a very good tyre. Turn in is precise and immediate with no drop in to the turn and straight line stability is excellent. Have not used them in the wet as yet. They have a stiff carcass which combined with my firmer suspension led to a hard ride with oem tyre pressures, I have dropped afew psi front and rear and this has helped to some extent. Tyre noise on coarse bitumen is noticeable but not too bad. Compared to the Dunlop Sportmax Sportsmart tyres used previously the Angel GT's are far superior on my Bandit, as for wear, time will tell I guess.

Pirelli Angel GT
Good feel. Excellent after the Dunlop OEM's.
Done 1500kms & the GT etched into the main tread is just starting to wear off. Still have 10mm chicken strips though.

Shinko 009
Well, here goes for a set of Shinko 009 Raven tyres.
Did a search with no results, so I guess no-one has done a report yet.
$300 for the pair delivered, thought I'd give them a go. Good reviews on the net. Will keep you posted.

Angel ST/GT Regular and A Spec?
I’m pretty sure I can work out the ST & GT side of things but what’s the A Spec got over the regular tyre?
I’m up for a new rear hoop and I’m disappointed that the PR2 only went 12,000km when the last one did 16,000km. The only difference this time around is a higher average speed being running the new rural commute. I’ll probably go the PR3 because I know Michelin but the Angels have had good reviews.

Re: Tyres: Feedback
My understanding is the A spec has a stiffer sidewall, for the heavier bikes
From what I have read, the bandit should have an A spec on the rear and normal on the front.

Michelin Pilot Road 3
24000kms on my first set of Michelin PR3, and the front looks worse than the rear. Bloody good tyre, and one that I'll be ordering again very shortly.

How would you rate them in the wet?
You know, the ads / reviews say they are just as good in wet as dry, but really when there is water flowing all the road... what do you think?

Re: Tyres: Feedback
I had a new pair of PR3s fitted just before a trip to the Island 2 years ago. On the Monday the rain was torrential (heaviest I've even ridden/driven in). A Hulux aquaplaned off the road ahead of me and I hit the same patch of water (creek like proportions on the bitumen). The bike didn't even move or slip. OK, there was no lean angle but I was impressed as I thought I'd be suffering a bad 'off'.
A British bike tested tested a range of tyres using two Bandit bikes and the PR3 was rated better than race wets by one tester - I put this up on the forum somewhere.
With high mileage and good grip I'm a PR3 fan.

Re: Tyres: Feedback
When I first saw the PR3's, I was worried about the mileage due to the severity of tread pattern. They looked like they would just shred when warm. Quiet the opposite.......great grip, and fantastic mileage. As far as wet weather performance........probably the best I've had. The PR3's are the most confidence inspiring tyre the Bandit has worn since new.
The only problem with replacing them at the moment...........get a deal on a new set locally, or back to Jake Wilson!

Re: Tyres: Feedback
Fitted Angel GT's Today, The rear tyre sucks trying to get it over the rim.
Have only done 40 km on them so far, but they seem good.
Were very skittish at first, but I put that down to running 48 psi in the rear and 39 in front, (my bad, miss calculated)
Reset them to 42 Rear and 36 front, and they seem very good, will update after Mondays ride to and from work

So After another 220 kms on them, I think they are an awesome tyre, on par with the PR3's. Just need to wait for the rain now
