Bandit feels like it is surging?
Hi there, I purchased a 2008 1250 Bandit-S about six weeks ago and love it!!!! But have noticed that the bike feels like it is surging. And if you slowly rev the bike whilst not moving the tacho needle wavers. I have done the throttle position sensor adjustment, as well as ballanced the throttle bodies as described in the forum.
The info you all have is fantastic and has been great, so if anyone has info that could help it would be much appreciated. Thanks Michael

This will open can of worms............................
I'll stay silent however
No bugger it I cant keep quiet!
How many K's? What mods? Cold/hot? What fuel? Noticed it under load? What PM?

About 7000km , no mods, hot or cold, BP ultima premium, no it's fine under load it is noticable when cruising revs. Sorry what is PM?

Re: Bandit feels like it is surging?
While you are not moving and reving it my bandit doesnt rev smooth eather and the tacho does move around slighty. i put that down to the o2 sensor adjusting the ratio of fuel/air.
while riding tho
if you have down both the tps and balance correctly i would be looking at a clogged fuel filter or clogged air filter but it still has me a bit puzzled that its fine once you accelerate
see what the rest have to say

Re: Bandit feels like it is surging?
There are a few reasons the bandit will do what you describe
The most probable in my mind is something that does not effect all bandits, but it does effect some and hence the can of worms thing 2WA has mentioned. There are some that say it is one thing, and others that say it is something else.
I have personally seen it on 3 bikes so far and from my experience of those bikes the getto fix is free and easy and works without causing other problems.
To see if what has caused your bike to do what you describe is like what I have seen, disconnect the GPS and go for a ride to replicate the situation.
This isn't the solution, just the "see if it is" bit.
It comes with a warning tho. Your bike will think it is in 6th gear AT ALL TIMES regardless of physical gear selected, including neutral so if your stand switch is touchy or you put the stand down, the engine will stop.
You must take care when releasing the clutch lever if you think you are in neutral as NO neutral (green) light will illuminate.
Let us know how you go and if it's not the problem we can further diagnose and help out.

Where did my R go? RPM
To add to the can of worms run 91 fuel but good quality 91 (Mobil, PB, Caltex, Shell) and the occasional tank of 98 to clean the system.
Re: Bandit feels like it is surging?
Between 2500 to 3500rpm. Thanks.

I've found mine does this slightly below 3000 rpm so I just ride it above 3000 rpm. Problem fixedMichael wrote:Between 2500 to 3500rpm. Thanks.

Mine runs brilliantly , never had a problem it's fantastically smooth and responsive. It's not necessary to thank me for the help

NO. Sorry mate, your just to nice
Re: Bandit feels like it is surging?
I have taken the side cover off on the gear selector side, and followed the wires that run off the large sensor where the shaft goes into the box and disconnected the white triangular plug up near the fuse box near the battery. Is this the correct one to disconnect the gear position sensor???

Re: Bandit feels like it is surging?
yep, white 3 pin plug that has one of the wires coloured pink.
Just for info, the green plug is the O2 sensor and the black plug is the speed sensor

Re: Bandit feels like it is surging?
Rode into work, bike felt smooth at 100, 90, 80 in sixth. Around town in 1st, 2nd, 3rd bike felt snatchy/surgy below 3000rpm, is this because the bike thinks it is in 6th???

Re: Bandit feels like it is surging?
80kph in 6th.. I know we have got heaps of torque, but why not rev the thing and be in the right gear
My bike is a little surgey at low rpm, but it hardly ever sits their once riding. Drop a tooth on the front sprocket and you'll hardly ever sit under 3000rpm as well. You will have a massive smile after said mods too!

most likely is.
I found doing the TB sync with the switch unplugged smoothed things out a lot. I've also upped the fuel a bit at idle and in the 10% throttle range which has helped also
there are other trains of thought that it can be cured by using a O2 eliminator or by removing the 2ndary flies.
I've not done wither to my bike so can't comment form personal experience, but I have not reason to doubt the info at this stage.

It seems depending on who you listen to either fitting a Automatic Timing Retardation Eliminator (ATRE) or a Pulsed Air Injection Reactor System (PAIRS) removal kit will sort the problem.
Neither are particularly expensive, so perhaps do both!

Re: Bandit feels like it is surging?
Hi, I bought a O2 Eliminator and fitted it. This helped a fair bit, but can hear a clicking sound as I ease on and off the throttle?
Has anyone else had the same noise? And if so what is it, and how do you stop it?

Could be the PAIR control solenoid valve, it clicks open/closed with throttle on/offMichael wrote:Hi, I bought a O2 Eliminator and fitted it. This helped a fair bit, but can hear a clicking sound as I ease on and off the throttle?

Re: Bandit feels like it is surging?
I'm having the same problem. Can feel the bike surging, most notably when sitting at about 3000rpm in 4th.
I normally just drop back to 3rd and the bike feels fine, however couple this problem with the bike averaging 8L per 100km and I think there may be something that needs fixing.
The bike is also a little rough at low speed, not as smooth I'd expect it to be. I get a lot of backfiring/popping on decel as well.
I use my bandit for commuting to and from work, and around to different jobs all day, so while I'm happy to be putting 8L or more in every 100kms when I'm going for a spirited ride with mates, I'd really like to achieve the 5-5.5L per 100 that many people seem to get, and from all reviews this bike is meant to get when stock.
Have just had first service done. The dealer mapped the bike for the new pipe (I put on at 900kms) as part of the first service, which I had to pay extra for as had it been the standard pipe they could have checked the mapping under warranty, but in the 300km (1.5 tank fills) since the service and mapping I am still having the same problems.
It is annoying because I am loving everything else about the bike. Open the throttle and she goes. Comfy and effortless to ride around on. Just need to sort out what ever is causing the above problems!
Any ideas from anyone who has solved this problem before?
Thanks

8lt on a commuting Bandit would be about right. I don't even check mine and its used as a commuter most days.Huggy wrote:I'm having the same problem. Can feel the bike surging, most notably when sitting at about 3000rpm in 4th.

Mid 5lt is achieved on a highway cruise. Nothing like that on a spirited ride I'm afraid.
You might be realising the Banditbis not great on fuel for the output and I'd agree with that.
Surging, well I can't help you there because mine doesn't do it.
