New bandit vs 2008 bandit
I am looking for a new bike and trying to decide whether to buy a newie or second hand. I've looked at a couple of 2008 models and I am struggling to see the differences to a new one. Apart from different colours and a black engine are there any mechanical differences between and old.
And while I'm at it- what sort of mileage are people getting before having to do some serious engine overhauling?
Any advice greatly appreciated

There was a recall on earlier 1250s for the regulator rectifier so Just make sure that`s been done .There were also a couple of reported incidences of starter motor magnets coming unglued ( thousands that haven`t)
Personally with the deals available on new bandits I think the bit of extra money is well spent knowing the history of the bike from new & also it has only belonged to you , And also the waranty .

I don't believe there is any difference apart from the colour and the instrument cluster...

I would also keep in mind the things that you will upgrade on a new bike, ie, muffler, rack, screen. There are a lot of nice low K ones out there that have already had the nice bits added. Will save you quite a few $s. But the final decision is yours.

A Bandit won't need an engine overhaul within the overall life of the bike, unless you plan on doing 150,000+ km

I will hit 40000k this weekend and no major problems. I just got new sprockets and chain.

I'll be close to 38k by the time we get back... 3rd set of tyres, (about 10k on the PR3's now) original chain and sprocket.. still appears that there is enough room on the chain adjustment for a while yet..

Re: New bandit vs 2008 bandit
Paul has a point wrt the recall - it doesn't affect later models - 2010+. I'm also wondering about the fuel pump issue - is it related to a particular year or years? I don't think we ever explored that association or lack thereof. S and naked models have different headlights (as I posted in the welcome, not having seen this thread firts, d'oh!) Fully faired models have different front springs and twin cooling fans (and I think OEM tyres?) - have I missed anything?

Re: New bandit vs 2008 bandit
Thanks guys for the advice, one decision has been made for me- the local dealer HAD a demo model for sale foe 12K but is now sold.
The decision now is to whether hold out for a new GSX1250FA as I have never had a bike with a full fairing before or not. I am wanting to take one for a ride tomorrow from hills cycles: 2008, 1700km $8790 just very low km for it's age..
Anyway I don't have to add money to where as the new bike will need minister of finance approval: kids, mortgage, wife etc you know what I mean...

Re: New bandit vs 2008 bandit
The only thing I would add is is timing. $12k for a demo model is outrageous when you could buy an S model with ABS late last year brand new with 12 months rego (eg "on the road") for $11.5k (and I think they were 2011 models but even if they were 2010 models no big deal). 12 months earlier (eg late 2010, 2 x SA dealers had the same deal for $10.5k, yep on the road, registered - I nearly flew over and bought a second one). And that's in Canberra - hardly the bargain capital of the universe. The dealers are always offering better deals at the end of the financial year and calendar year on new machinery - wait if you can is my advice, but I understand if you can't - just don't ever look at prices again after you've bought it!

Re: New bandit vs 2008 bandit
from 2009 , aren't the bores magically electroplated or something for extra wear resistance, thats right I knew I read it somewhere.........
"Piston rings have a friction-reducing chrome-nitride coating, while Suzuki Composite Electrochemical Material (SCEM) cylinder-bore coating enhances the big-bore engine's performance and durability."

I just tried looking it up on wikipedia & they say it was carried through from 2008 to 2009 & the 2008 was the same as 2007 , But you may be right , I didnt think they changed anything

Not sure they mean it`s new for that year , as the other stuff listed was on the 2007 & 2008 models as well / Just a bit misleading I think

Re: New bandit vs 2008 bandit
The only difference between the models that matters is that the faired versions are ridden by pussies.
And don't believe anything you read in the press. It was put there by people like me.
