Late 2017, madmax visiting on the way to WA
First topic message reminder :
Just a heads up for any South Aussie's, in Dec 2017 madmax is riding from Melbourne to Perth for Xmas, he'll be staying with me for a couple of nights and would like to check out the place, i was thinking a ride up through the Hills/Barossa and perhaps the Fleurieu as well.
When he leaves here I'll be going for the 1st few days too, we're heading for Port Lincoln so I'm thinking day 1 should include the Clare Valley and a bit of the Flinders Ranges then off to Pt Lincoln for a night and Streaky Bay the next
It'd be good if we can get a few local members together while he's here, dates will get posted later

I've never needed to book accommodation across the Nullarbor any more than 1 day ahead. But the Penong Pub might be a different story.Chook wrote:I was expecting prices like that for anything past Cedunamadmax wrote:Chook wrote:Sounds great, I'll let you know when I'm booking the Boston, might let mm book us all in to PenongDavo1063 wrote:I will be able to join you for Lincoln and beyond. I can either meet you in Pt Augusta or iron Knob if you are going the Kimba-Cleve Route or just meet you here in Whyalla if you are going that way.
On the way home Kaylah and I are staying with a mate in Pt Augusta for a night, can either leave you at Iron Knob or the Tanks
The Penong pub could be a little expensive. Just read a review which said $85 for a room with shared facilities
Might have to book soon though, week before Xmas there could be a lot travelling East-West or visa versa

Bryan, forgot to mention. If you happen to be riding past peaceful bay, there is a Bandit road just before it on the Esperance side. Might want to stop and take a happy snap with your bike

The Hotel Boston is booked for Sunday 17th
1 x twin basic pub room booked for Kaylah & I $65
1 x single basic pub room booked for Bryan, $35
Parking is off street in the beer garden area, it's a more working man's pub than the others, there is another with good meals 5 min walk away and 2 or 3 others within 5 min walk of that
Davo1063, the Boston's phone number is 8682 1311, give them a call if you are a definite, still have rooms available
1 x twin basic pub room booked for Kaylah & I $65

Last time we were down there the Bow bridge store did pretty good food if you are up for a bite too. You can always drop into Dinosaur World, it gets mixed reviews on Trip Advisor. Walpole has a cool op shop if you want to take a look its back a street from the main drag. I recommend the eco-tour there too if you have the time and a few pennies to spare.

Either way is about the same. You are going a bit out of the way with the Kimba - Cleve route and just for a few bends around Cleve and Cleve to Arno.
BTW I won't be coming all the way to WA with you :-) I will come home from Streaky or there abouts.
Sounds like we are going through the Bratten Way to Cummins from Tumby - great ride. You might as well go south from Cummins and come into Pt Lincoln over the hills. Great views of the Bay that way. Pass Winter Hill Lookout on the in way too.
Sorry I haven't replied to this earlier.

Re: Late 2017, madmax visiting on the way to WA
If you end up going the back up plan, Ceduna Pub and Caravan Park were separated by a road, it's now a fenced in secure part of the pub for Motel patrons, either would be secure and safe for the bikes, the rest of the town after dark......................
you'd be taking your chances
you'd be taking your chances

Port Augusta - Kimba - Arno Bay 253 kmDavo1063 wrote:madmax wrote:From Port Augusta, we are coming down the east coast through Whyalla. Port Augusta - Whyalla - Arno Bay 228 km
Port Augusta - Whyalla -Cleve - Arno Bay 251 km
The tanks to Whyalla and then onto Cowell is one of the most boring drives I regularly do although I am still happy to go that way as The Tanks to Kimba isn't much better. either way, detour via Cleve is worth the extra 23 or 25km
I had considered riding in the other way from Cummins but we'll be doing Bratten Way in both directions, there is no way you can take someone into Lincoln for their 1st Visit without riding in from the North and experiencing the views of Boston Bay from the Lincoln Highway and riding along that awesome piece of coast line.
Winters Hill is a definite and is just as accessible from the Lincoln Highway as it is from the Western Approach Rd, IMHO, Winters Hill is at its best at sunrise.
We'll be riding the Flinders Hwy past the Cummins turn off the following day, from there up to Cummins through Edillilie is nothing special so I'd much rather do Bratten Way twice than the Flinders Hwy
Re: Late 2017, madmax visiting on the way to WA
Penong pub booked. No deposit required. $85 per head. Single bed per room with AC and TV. Bike parking is compound "per se" apparently town is very safe, no one locks their cars up either. lol. Boss and Chucky live on site.

Doesn't matter, either way we will be on the bikes .
Just let me know which way you are going.
If it is Kimba, The Tanks would suit me to meet.
If it's through Whyalla I'll stay here till you get here.

If madmax thinks he'll come home via Pt Lincoln I reckon we'll go Kimba, (would Iron Knob be easier than the Tanks for you?) if he thinks he'll stick to the Eyre Hwy home, will probably go through Whyalla
