Late 2017, madmax visiting on the way to WA
Just a heads up for any South Aussie's, in Dec 2017 madmax is riding from Melbourne to Perth for Xmas, he'll be staying with me for a couple of nights and would like to check out the place, i was thinking a ride up through the Hills/Barossa and perhaps the Fleurieu as well.
When he leaves here I'll be going for the 1st few days too, we're heading for Port Lincoln so I'm thinking day 1 should include the Clare Valley and a bit of the Flinders Ranges then off to Pt Lincoln for a night and Streaky Bay the next
It'd be good if we can get a few local members together while he's here, dates will get posted later

I would most certainly be up for a catch up and ride to show mm around our fair country side, not sure about the Pt Lincoln bit ..............it depends how Mrs Paul is at that time .

That looks like a nice days ride , if we had longer we could have gone further south , but then that might be stretching it a bit .

I'll watch for the dates as you will be coming through my area and if time off work permits I would come for a ride to Lincoln and maybe Streaky.

Re: Late 2017, madmax visiting on the way to WA
Speaking to madmax today we now have some dates:
If anyone wants to join all or any part of the trip, the more the merrier
Wed Dec 13th, mm leaving Melbourne on the 12th for the Grampians, 13th heading for Naracoorte (or Lucindale), at this stage I'm planning on riding down there, stay the night
Thurs Dec 14th, ride into Adelaide with Bryan, hopefully via Wellington and a tour of the Fleurieu Peninsula / Adelaide Hills before heading into town
Friday Dec 15th, rest day, Bryan's son is now based in Adelaide with the Army so he'll be catching up with him
Saturday Dec 16th, Bryan, myself and my daughter Kaylah (+ anyone else that wants to tag along) will be leaving Adelaide, at this stage plan on heading across the Adelaide Hills into the Barossa Valley, onto the Clare Valley before hitting the Flinders Ranges, want to include a few of the good roads crossing the Flinders Ranges, something like this,
https://goo.gl/maps/eqVKECF2URw
staying the night at either Melrose, Wilmington or Quorn
Sunday Dec 17th, To Port Lincoln, not sure whether to head straight down through Whyalla (all straight and boring) or head over to Kimba and head South to Cleve (10 or so km of nice corners near Cleve) and back onto the Lincoln Hwy at Arno Bay, do want to turn off at Tumby Bay and take the road over to Cummins, possibly even return to Tumby and head into Port Lincoln on the Lincoln Hwy, coming into town from that direction is pretty spectacular, be a pity for Bryan (and Kaylah, she's never been over there either) to miss the view over Boston Bay
Monday Dec 18th, To Penong via Elliston, Streaky Bay, Ceduna etc etc
Tuesday Dec 19th, Bryan heads West, we head home with a overnight stay, most likely with a mate in Port Augusta
If anyone wants to meet us at Wellington to do the Fleurieu stint, leave Adelaide with us for a overnighter or even a day trip returning home part way or any other part of the rides feel free to jump in

Cheers paul, would hope to be at Wellington by mid morning if we were going to get the ride in we talked about a while backpaul wrote:I will keep in touch with regards to your e.t.a. at Wellington or Strath & meet up with you there for a ride.
This is roughly what I was thinking for anyone else that wants to come along too

We will be looking at 3 - 3 1/2 hours ride in the morning to get to Wellington
Re: Late 2017, madmax visiting on the way to WA
The plan is from Naracoorte to head over to Kingston SE and head north up the coast. I want to include Victor Harbour on my way to Adelaide Chook.
After that I'm leaving it to you to show me the best roads in the region.

Sounds like you guys will be having a pretty good ride over in SA. What's your journey look like coming into WA Bryan? And what dates are you staying over here?

I will be able to join you for Lincoln and beyond. I can either meet you in Pt Augusta or iron Knob if you are going the Kimba-Cleve Route or just meet you here in Whyalla if you are going that way.

Plan is to leave Port Lincoln Monday the 18th of Dec. coming across through Norseman and down to Esperance- Albany - Walpole to Northcliffe, where my sister has a farm. Should be there on the 23rd. I be hanging around there over Christmas for a few day and then heading to Bunbury for a couple of days.reddog wrote:Sounds like you guys will be having a pretty good ride over in SA. After that it is generally unplanned. Although I do plan on heading to Perth and possibly up to Shark Bay.
Heading home is up to me as I'm not back at work until mid Feb. Though I wouldn't be staying in WA past the end of Jan

From Port Augusta, we are coming down the east coast through Whyalla. Do you think the Kimba-Cleve route is a better ride?Davo1063 wrote:I will be able to join you for Lincoln and beyond. Either way is a similar distance, the Whyalla way has no good corners, the Cleve way has 5 - 10 km of nice bends
To do the Cleve way you'll be doing the same 148 of straight roads past Iron Knob that you will be doing on the way home
Another option, meet Davo in Whyalla, detour from Cowell to Cleve, take a short spin out of town to get a corner fix (also a few between Cowell and Cleve) then rejoin the coast at Arno Bay
BTW, Cleve should be famous.......................
it's my birth place

On the way home Kaylah and I are staying with a mate in Pt Augusta for a night, can either leave you at Iron Knob or the Tanks
Re: Late 2017, madmax visiting on the way to WA
I've pm'd "F", we are going past Port Pirie where his business, Cruisers Carwash is, the day after we'll be zipping in and out of Cummins where he lives when he's not in Pirie. I'll be in Pirie Thursday night, I'll drop past Cruisers and see if he is about.
it'd be nice to catch up with him too

On the way home I might come down and stay at Streaky Bay and head down through PL again
I'll work it out at the time.

The Penong pub could be a little expensive. Just read a review which said $85 for a room with shared facilities

Righto Bryan. You let me know when you want to catch up mate when you are headed towards Bunbury. There's some lovely roads around fridge town, Balingup areamadmax wrote:Plan is to leave Port Lincoln Monday the 18th of Dec. coming across through Norseman and down to Esperance- Albany - Walpole to Northcliffe, where my sister has a farm. At this stage just the couple of days between Christmas. If you give me a bit of warning some time off could be arranged or a mystery illness could keep me away from work
