1200 rear brake disc interchangeable RF900
Well..a bit embarrassed to say that I didn`t keep an eye on my rear pads, and subsequently, out on a 300k ride,
I`d worn down to metal quiet quickly, as a result of trail braking all the time. Apart from destroying the disc, this also caused another problem, which was the pistons had come out a fair way, and brought with it, the secondary labyrinth seals in the calliper, so I needed to rebuild the calliper with new seals
I ride with ear plugs, and didn`t hear the first sounds of the screech, only that the brake had an obvious fade from lack of meat...anyway...
It was Friday afternoon at 4 o`clock, what`s the chances of finding anything for a Gen1 without ordering it from Suzuki???
Firstly to my surprise, a suzi dealer had a seal kit and pads sitting on the shelf, so that was one miracle.
Secondly as for the disc, I rang up "Metalgear" in Brisbane, they had an after market to suit, for a $129 (OEM $250) but by the time I got there, they would be closed, and not open till Monday, so I went to a wrecker near by on the off chance with 10 mins before close, and they had an, "RF900" rear disc, which is interchangeable with the 1200 models.
The disc looked like it was brand new, and I got it for $50.
In preference, I would always go for an OEM disc over after market, but they are way to dear.
So if anyone else is in urgent need for any particular reason, its good to know there are other options out there.

I put a Metal Gear rotor on the back of my VX800, IIRC I paid about $180 with a set of pads, far cheaper than the $300+ Mr Suzuki wanted for the OEM at the time
20,000km later when I sold the bike it was still nearly looking like brand new, I wouldn't have a problem using one of their Rotors over a OEM one

Sounds like a great wreckers, you have at your disposal.
What a bargain. And no closing in ten minutes premium.
Do you want to give them a plug?
I wouldn't mind knowing their number.
The wreckers that I have contacted locally have stupendous prices, and thus, don't get my business.
Good to see that you had a result.

Good to see an underrated RF900R saved the day.
Amongst all my bikes good and bad the RF900R would still be the only one I'd buy back.
I've often thought the front would be a swap for the B12 too.

I still see the occasional one on bikesales.com if you're looking for a project ( some of them aren't too shabby either )2wheelsagain wrote:Good to see an underrated RF900R saved the day.

I know what your saying about wreckers Bosco.
I can`t say that this mob are always cheap, but I can say, that they`re not a bad bunch of lads to talk to in person. Their quiet jovial characters, as opposed to 99.99999% of wreckers you talk to. Most are very very arrogant, and I don`t know why they are, but it seems to be written in slate that they are.
I`ve never bought anything online from them, only in person, plus I`m not paying for postage, as I`m door knocking. I do visit them quiet a bit, just to see what they`ve got.
I did haggle them with the disc, all in tongue and cheek though, not going in and being a dick of a customer. They did want $60, but talked them down to $50.
Last Monday I bought a side cover for my DRZ from them, and it was $50. I can buy a full after market plastics kit for just over $200, but they are a very flimsy plastic, opposed to OEM. I`m still not sure if that was a good price or not, but happy with the out come as I needed it.

We would probably all be surprised at the amount of carry over parts from one model to the next .

Yeah, I`ve got a Metal Gear on my Gen2, running organic pads, and they work extremely well, and are wearing even and long lasting.
I had another Metal Gear on before this one, running full Sintered pads, and the high % of Sintered material destroyed the disc in no time.
I`m not a big fan in the after market full Sintered pad thing, as they`re just too aggressive and squeal and...I don`t like them. Over the years I`ve wrecked to many discs with high % Sintered material. Organic or OEM!!

Your right there Paul. I ve said on this site a couple of times that I use 01-02 GSXR 1000 OEM front pads, as they use the same callipers, but have a different compound to the Bandit. They are Sintered, but have the right % material not to eat the disc and bite extremely well, compared to the Bandit pads. Yes...they are OEM price though, but I can live with the pros of the big picture.
The pads are also compatible to Busa and SV, with the same 6 piston calliper.
BUT...1200 6 piston Bandits only, not Gen1 or 1250`s
