Missing Members
First topic message reminder :
Hey Bandit Brothers,
Some members we have had on here that were big contributers to this great forum and I was wondering what happened to members like:
Ross used to enjoy his pics of his bandit mods and his drawings
SolomonKane used to write for bike mags from America and all his responses were, to me a good read and informative.
Plus a few others.

Re: Missing Members
I've been keeping myself busy making electric bikes, or e-bikes. They are the perfect commuter if you live in Canberra and especially if you work in Civic. The minimum cost of a car park is $14 per day and that's if you can find one. A return bus fare from Queanbeyan to Civic is $17. I have some ongoing ankle problems as well. 3 years ago I had my ankle fused, and all was going well up to about 6 months ago when a spur had grown on the ankle and was banging into my talus (next bone in front). I could still ride to work and for 4 months I rode with my walking stick strapped to the frame.
The first ebike I built was a bit of a monster. It had a 4065 hub motor in the back wheel (40mm wide stator, 65kph top speed). The bike I adapted was a Giant DH Comp with 8" travel front and rear. Top speed was 65kph, but with a good tailwind it would sometimes hit 80kph. I wanted a bike that would travel quickly over uneven ground and this done it in spades. It would just ripple over median strips and so on. Super plush ride. Super cop magnet.
My next project was to make a reasonably quick, efficient allrounder that was much more like a bicycle than a slow motorbike. I used my long term XC bike a 2008 Giant TranceX. I put on a Bafang, or 8-FUN (literal translation of the chinese word bafang is 8 fun) mid drive, or crank drive BBS02 750W with a 50v 17AH battery. It is speed limited to 50kph and with the original gearing it would get there very quickly. I have a 42T front sprocket on now and it sits on43kph on a flat. It is a pedal assist design, that is you start pedaling and the drive gives power relative to the assistance level you choose. It has 9 assist levels - 1 = 10%, 9 = 100% that are switched by your thumb on the fly. You can pedal as much - or as little as you like. Even with a busted foot! This motor now has 4500km on it and no troubles at all. The rear wheel is one of the only original parts on this bike and has just gone 28000km - the frame cracked and was replaced at 14000km. I use it as a daily commuter and on weekends I tow my young bloke around, sometimes on 60km+ rides. The cost of the electricity only is less than 5c per day, but you have to factor in the cost of the battery as well. Each charge, or cycle, depletes the battery by a small fraction and so daily cost is more like $1.10.
I have made four others just recently, two for friends and two more to sell. They are the same Bafang mid drive and a 14.5AH battery. The bikes are brand new Taiwanese Hasa hardtails. Excellent bang for the buck.
Rolls.

Re: Missing Members
Thats a nice little sideline you have going there. Well done.
I guess the Chinese should know a thing or two about building bikes.

Re: Missing Members
Are the Hasa bikes ok rolls? All the reviews seem to indicate they are.
I've been looking at them and Ried for a upgrade to my 20+yo mountain bike, leaning towards Ried atm because they have a store with back up service in Adelaide

Re: Missing Members
They're a damn good buy. The frame is machined and welded perfectly, and generally they are half price of norco / giant / trek/ etc for the level of componentry. They're a large Taiwanese operation from what I've read.

Re: Missing Members
For the set up on the Hasa 7.5kg. Not a problem when you're rolling, even if the bat is flat and you are traveling under your own power, just apparent when you have to put it over a fence or carry it up a heap of stairs. There is a "walk mode" on the bafangs that lets the bike go at about 2-3kph. very handy in the scrub getting up steep rises.

Re: Missing Members
Hey old girls, hows it hanging? i haven't been on for donkeys.
Life does move on and at this time of my life, with two young boys, work, etc, etc. I rarely get on the bike and rarely get the opportunity to surf the net and forums.
I will probably sell my bikes soon and get something I can do with the boys. A side by side would be good! for dad
Good to see the forum is still ticking along nicely! how are all the old trouble makes going?

Enjoy your time with your kids doing whatever ,you will be glad you did later in life , & who knows , they may even take an interest in bikes later on . Take care & keep in touch occasionally eh

Re: Missing Members
Gday Reardo, long time no see mate. You should come down to Philip island next year for the super bikes. The wife and I are coming over for it. I don't get to ride the bike much these days either mate. It's not worth selling the Bandit, just keep it for the occasional ride. We've just been to Japan with my son, Joshua loved the motogp at motegi

Re: Missing Members
Hey you all. Just reactivated my account. That bloke with the big stick must have canceled me lol
No, I haven't sold either bandit as yet. the fixer upper bandit will go once i get around to finishing it.
But the Silver Bullet will probably stay for now, now it does not need to go.......
In the last 3 months since my last post, we have purchased a house for a rental investment & been flat out getting up to scratch.
And Reddog mate, I read that (SBK) and google the shit out of it! started looking at accommodation and BOOM! I remembered that I'm required at work for Feb.
But i'll ask anyway! lol probably unlikely to find accommodation too.
Paul, I haven't been in trouble since i stopped hanging around you trouble makers
Hammy: Still dreaming mate!

Hi Reardo you only mentioned the troublemakers and fossils , and not the good looking ones . Good to hear from you . There are still a few of the oldies on here , and some of us have been lucky enough to retire and go for a ride while everyone else is working .
