Gus's Fuel Run
First topic message reminder :
Hey Gus. The bandit ran out of fuel today at 330klm. So am I to think my bike not run in yet at 5500ks? Will I get more out of it when I whack the new iridium plugs in? Wanna swap?

No mate. I don't. I'm going to rebalance the TBs, only this time I'm gonna jack the vacuum setting up to 3.0 instead of 2.0 cm/hg

Re: Gus's Fuel Run
Thought I'd check what my fuel consumption is at the moment. Just done my 6000km service (oil n filter), and gave the Bandit a wash! I fill up every 3 days (265km's) using that extra expensive stuff, and without fail Im getting 5 - 5.1litres/100kms. My Bandit is standard - no engine mods and standard exhaust. I did put a "Motul" sticker on the lower chin spoiler, maybe that affects the consumption just a fraction??
oooops, forgot to mention that 95% of the trip is fwy commute.

Re: Gus's Fuel Run
my fuel economy over the last 2241KMs is.........
15.74KM/L
16.53KM/L = 6L/100KM
15.34KM/L
15.34KM/L
15.29KM/L
16.28KM/L
15.11KM/L
14.58KM/L = 6.8L/100KM
16.02KM/L
So my fuel use ranges from 6-6.8L per 100KM over the last 2241KMs
I wish the stupid app would actually export the stats to a excel sheet or something but it doesn't :-S
FYI, I use BP 95RON fuel only from the same bowser at the same fuel station. Except once when I couldn't get home with out fuel and it was from a different BP..... but still 95RON....
15.74KM/L
16.53KM/L = 6L/100KM
15.34KM/L
15.34KM/L
15.29KM/L
16.28KM/L
15.11KM/L
14.58KM/L = 6.8L/100KM
16.02KM/L

Are they commuting figures mainly?
Re: Gus's Fuel Run
Yesterday on the way to work I followed Dhula's advice and stayed out of sixth gear. 37 ks to work and back. Fuel eco went down to 5.0L/100k. Is it the advanced timing due to the TRE (which only advances the timing from 1st -5th gear)? Or has the engine been labouring slightly at 110kmh in sixth. My sprockets are standard. The tacho sits 3700rpm at 110 in sixth gear.

I don’t think 37km is far enough to get an idea of consumption. An extra 50ml in the tank on the refill will blow the figures out.
I too have in the past tested 5th over 6th and returned almost exactly the same figures. Especially when you’re trying to remember exactly how full the tank was when you started. Even the slope of the servo pavement can have an effect. The gearing is very similar so it’s not surprising.
It comes down to Fuel use V’s engine work I reckon.
Re: Gus's Fuel Run
Well let see who can get the most kls before the first bar goes out .No large tanks but you can cram in as much as you like . Probably
should make it a new post so i will under .Fuel challenge .

Re: Gus's Fuel Run
My B12 with K&N + 112.5 main jets and Staintune exh gets 6L/100km combined highway and suburban riding.
My ex-GSX650F used to get 5.5L/100km. Both using BP91.
My Wife used to have a '04 Honda Jazz which had a CVT automatic - it would get 5.5L/100km around town - the bike is compartively thirsty.

Okay. That killed the fifth gear theory Dhula. After this morning, the bandit has reset itself back to 6.5L/100k.

Re: Gus's Fuel Run
Did a quick 700k sprint yesterday (triangle ride - Darwin to Kakadu (Jabiru) then 220 km of Kakadu Hwy (that's the fun part = it actually has some sweepers - unusal for NT) to Pine creek then back to Darwin via Stuart Hwy. Had the saddle bags on, so a bit of drag there but the FA averaged 6.0l/100km. Fastest was a little over double ton indicated (getting past the road trains...and others), otherwise sitting mainly on 140-150 indicated (130km/h posted limits). Was fairly happy with that. Its only done just under 5000kms so far so assume it's still loosening up.
Had a Beemer R1150 along also and he used a little more fuel on the twisty bits - less on the long straight sections AKA Arnhem Hwy - Stuart Hwy. Conditions - It was a VERY BLOODY HOT and HUMID day - life as usual for this time of year in the tropics.
Similar riding on my little Beemer F650GS (800cc twin) would return worse than that at 150km/h (maybe 6.6) but is waaaay better for the 100km/h daily commute (it returns 3.6/100 as a commuter versus the FAs 5.6/100 doing same).

Re: Gus's Fuel Run
Shit blood shit. I put the GPS (Global position thingy) on the bike last night to check how far my speedo is out. Speedo/60k GPS/61k Speedo/80k GPS/73k, Speedo/120k GPS/110k. What does this mean? my fuel economy is even worse than I thought coz my odo will be out as well which means if the first block goes at 74k it's probably really going off at around 60k!

While the speedo is optimistic i do beleive that the odometer is accurate

there's a thread on the 2WF that talks about this. With electronic speedo's/odo's the speedo is designed to be (from memory) 7% out whereas the odometer will be accurate. The bloke who wrote the thread went on to say if you use a speedo healer than your speedo will be accurate but your odometer will be out.
My guess is your economy figures are pretty spot on. How the hell you achieve them is beyond me, but that's another story.

I found the 1250 motor gives better economy than the 1200 motor / I used to get 16 to 16.5 km per ltr commuting on the 1200 and around 18 km per ltr commuting on the 1250 / around 18 on the 1200 touring and 20 to 20 plus on the 1250 touring
If you get into it on either though that drops considerably.

Mate your testing is about right except the odo is pretty well spot on. Why Suzuki go for a error margin like that I don't know. I think Kawa are about the same. Good for braging rights at the pub

1. Bragging rites
2. So peeps don't sue, complain, winge etc etc because they get speeding tickets
3. Cause you can read faster than actual but never be doing faster than read (ADR's etc).
4. Wide variety of tyre circumferences dependent on maker, size, wear etc
and probably many more I can't think of.

Re: Gus's Fuel Run
Well if the odo's accurate that's better than nothing. The speedo being out doesn't bother me. Buy the way guys. If you ever have the tank off, make sure when you put the fuel hose back on, it clicks. 10k out of Benalla 100kph the bandit died. Ilook in the mirrors before rolling to a stop and there was a big plume of misted fuel behind me. When I pulled up I noticed the fuel line had blown off. The tank was 3/4 full before and almost dry after. Thank God no-one had thrown a cigarette out as they passed me.

Re: Gus's Fuel Run
Just back from a 5 day ride around Tassie. Consumption was 4.8-5.1lt/100 using BP 98ron.
My mate on his 2006 GSX750 (carbies) was getting the same figures. Neither of us was taking it easy
