Gus's Fuel Run
First topic message reminder :
Hey Gus. The bandit ran out of fuel today at 330klm. So am I to think my bike not run in yet at 5500ks? Will I get more out of it when I whack the new iridium plugs in? Wanna swap?

Re: Gus's Fuel Run
In theory I can get 380km out of a tank at legal Hwy cruising speeds. I've never actually achieved that, and on long Hwy runs I get bored and like to stop every 250km or so.
When I'm playing in the hills with the usual group I like to stop every 100km, it helps to make sure everyone is still upright.
Around town I get between 170 and 220 before reserve.

Re: Gus's Fuel Run
On a long trip my g\f goes about 250 before needing fuel , so i stop with her .If i'm on my own the best ive done in a day is 1,300 kay .
I hate stopping for fuel so i just keep going .There is no one to talk to when you stop so , fill and go .At times at 800 kays i ve said ive had enough
and she replies come on ,another 100 . She may not be fast but 900 kls a day is normal for her on the Bonnie .I've ridden it i dont know how
she does it .

All good Thof, it was pretty obvious that's what you meant. But why let that stop me. If ever I do say something that you don't think is appropriate just say so and I'll be the first to publicly apologise.

Re: Gus's Fuel Run
So today I too advantage of a day off and sunshine and rode to Lakes Entrance.
Now a straight hwy run is about 120km each way but that didn't appeal to me and the back roads take it out to about 270km return.
Knowing that my right wrist has a twitch thats hard to control I filled up out of town so I'd have enough to make it home.
BP (branded) 91 octane = 219.6km with the bar flashing for the last 10km.
The thing is at license preserving speeds I did 130km on 2 bars. At go to jail speeds the other 2 bars only lasted about 75km

270km What did you do after lunch?
I got 305km out of 19L with .7L left on Sunday.
Re: Gus's fuel run
I stripped the FI tuner off the bike this morning and fitted the baffle I copied from Ewok's R77 muffler. I've done 75ks and the first block on the fuel guage hasn't gone yet. AFR Guage is showing optimal. There is barely any popping from the exhaust. A the muffler is nowhere near as red hot as it was.

Re: Gus's Fuel Run
A bit of a thread revival.
262km used 16.5 litres.
On Sunday a few of us did a ride up to Tumut-Cabramurra-Tumbarumba-Tarcutta-Wagga.
There was a Bandit (me), a DL1000, 900 Hornet, Ducati 999 and a F650 (the detuned 800). Except for the bloke on the DL1000 we topped the tanks off in Tumut. Headed to Cabramurra for lunch then off to Tumbarumba via Elliots Way.
We rolled into Tumba and pulled in to the first servo. Damn, closed. Went down the road to the second servo. Fuck, it's closed, fuck. There's a town wide power outage. We ring the servo at Batlow (37km away). Fuck, they don't have power either.
So a quick phone call to my wife to appraise her of the situation and prepare her for a drive to the country with fuel.
The decision was made to head to Tarcutta, about 70km away. It was the slowest, most sedate run I've ever done on these roads. I went on to reserve about 15km from Tarcutta. But we all made it.
Now, the Bandit took 16.5 litres, after riding 262km. I could have made it to Wagga, just. The Ducati took 14.3 litres, it's got a 16 litre tank. Turns out his fuel warning light had been on since about 5km out of Tumba. The Hornet took 14 litres from a 19 litre tank.
What was impressive was the DL1000, it took 20 litres, but had done 365km. I have no idea about the F650, she headed straight home.
So it turns out that the Bandit was actually the least economical of the bunch.
Now I must point out that for about 100km of the ride I was in 2nd or 3rd sitting on between 3000 and 9000 rpm - I have no idea how fast I was going.

Re: Gus's Fuel Run
That’s exceptional figures for the Duc.
I’m pretty sure I’ll be getting at least as good economy as the Bandit out of the FZ1 when I get it home and that’s with an extra 40hp on tap.

Re: Gus's Fuel Run
Travelling at 9,000 revs you shouldnt even be thinking about how much fuel you have used .
Highway speed and a bit ,then you can.

Usually, I don't worry about economy trust me, right up until we got to Tumba, economy was the last thing on my mind. But having to get back to Tarcutta, fuel economy became my number 1 priority, if it hadn't I'm not sure I would've made it.
As for the economy of the Duc, no one was more impressed or surprised than the owner.

Mines getting a bit worse than that ATM due to some problem with the throttle cables I can't seam to solve.b12mick wrote:What was impressive was the DL1000, it took 20 litres, but had done 365km.
I've heard (and read) that these things can get astonishing economy out of their 16 (or is it 14) liter fuel tanksb12mick wrote:I have no idea about the F650, she headed straight home.

Gus's Fuel Run
Mine has turned to shit. After balancing the throttle bodies the fuel economy went to 4.8l /100k for 2 trips. Now i'm back riding to Benalla to work and i have to fill up after the 3rd day. It's back to 6.5l /100k. What mods? i here you ask? No snorkel in the air box, standard air cleaner element. Yoshi muffler. No secondarys. pair valves removed. original plugs. I think I'll burn it. My last option is to put a holeshot dobeck fi kit on it, because no matter what I do, the bloody thing creeps back to where it was. And now there's a flat spot at 2000rpm.

Re: Gus's Fuel Run
Clean the air filter (or replace it) clean and gap the plugs (or replace them) and see how things go.
Re balance the TB's if you haven't done it after the 2ndary rip out, then consider taking it to a bike shop that has some form of suzuki ECU editing tool such as a yoshie box (you can also make your own but not 100% sure if it will work on the Bandit. I have instructions if you like. Costs about $50 in parts and a bit of your time), Teka or a Biketech FI adjuster and get them to do a bit of adjusting to match the extras you have. I have the Biketech Fi adjuster and found a happy medium that allowed for ~5.5l per 100kms as an average between city/country and still had good go. I could get better go but it effected economy as expected.
I also found that on my bike it helped to bypass the GPS as well.
I think I still have a few files with different setups for the bandit on my tuning computer so if you find someone with a Biketech Fi tuner and want them, let me know

Re: Gus's Fuel Run
Sounds the same set as mine including a flat spot around 2 .Never ride constant at that so it doesnt bother me .
When i bought a new air filter i was shocked at what a new one looked like .(white )
That the best i can suggest ,not up with the techno bits . Save your money IMHO iridium plugs no real advantage .

Re: Gus's Fuel Run
Thats got to hurt after the money and effort you put into it.
I agree with Gus and use the standard plugs. On the Bandit they're easy enough to get to.
I'm still running the original air filter 26,000km (cleaned) with fueling as good as the day I picked it up. No better actually since its run in

You're quite right I was smiling, but the Duc and the BMW were well infront of me and had started behind me. Some of you may think that it would be embarrasing to be 'beaten' by a BMW F650 ridden by a girl, but it'd be more embarrasing if she rounded up and passed the Duc as well, oh that's right, she did. That woman can ride, she'd be a demon on a sports bike.
