Gus's Fuel Run
Hey Gus. The bandit ran out of fuel today at 330klm. So am I to think my bike not run in yet at 5500ks? Will I get more out of it when I whack the new iridium plugs in? Wanna swap?

I havent stretched mine to the walking stage but I reckon thats all I'd expect.Kaupy1962 wrote:Hey Gus. The bandit ran out of fuel today at 330klm. So am I to think my bike not run in yet at 5500ks? Will I get more out of it when I whack the new iridium plugs in? Wanna swap?
Gus's run although heroic was something very few of us could repeat. Could he even better/repeat it himself?
Rider weight, wind, road conditions, right wrist and a host of other things play a part in it.
330km = 3 hrs in the seat and for me its time for a drink and a stretch anyway.
Re: Gus's Fuel Run
I regularly get more than 360k's on mine (country riding mostly) - on a few occasions managed up over 380. If I want to get the most out of it I'll fill up on the centre stand and dribble the last few mil's of fuel in. I'm also running the 'Iridium' plugs.. but don't think that makes a hell of a difference.

Re: Gus's Fuel Run
I’ve always thought economy on mine wasn’t spectacular. Maybe I’m the odd one out.
Maybe I just ride hard

Re: Gus's Fuel Run
Its not the distance you get thats important but how mush fuel ($) your useing to get there .If i can get 100 kls a Tank more thats roughly 5 litres .
At $1.50 per litre = $7.50 per tank , same bike, and mine is naked ..Thats a huge differance ,somethings not right .If it was me i'd put it back to standard and try again .Can you unplug the tuner .?
If we were on a trip together and i cost you $7.50 extra PER TANK you would soon get annoyed with it .

I'd have buckleys of getting any where near Gus's figures. I only care about fuel economy as an indicator of changes in the bikes running. Couldn't care less how much I put in the tank. Most of the blokes I ride with are on Harley's and they get better figures at 120 to 140 than I do.

Re: Gus's Fuel Run
Never attempted to get anywhere near 300km out of mine. Worst is just over 100Km to a full tank (Was at a track day though with WOT most of the day). Best is proabbly about 280 before all the mods. These days dropping a tooth on the front hasn't helped the fuel economy, but the smile on my face is hard to wipe off

Re: Gus's Fuel Run
Just returned from the trip out to Mudgee and back... about 300km.. had to fill when I returned (just using standard unleaded) and it took close to 16 litres - a little more than I would normally use but I was fairly heavy on the right hand today.. (too cold to go slow!)

Re: Gus's Fuel Run
I just got 300 Highway k's out of mine at about $140 when it was standard+Yoshi . lucky to get around 220km now tho and feel the same as the ^^ratbags^^ above, as long as I'm having fun, i don't care. My V8 5.7litre Calais uses 19L/100k around town. so the Bandit is cheap to run
Re: Gus's Fuel Run
At touring speeds (with luggage and with an odd fang) I expect 360kms from the tank which is what it normally achieves on those kind of runs. More like 300kms around town commuting. I normally run 98 or 95 unleaded if that makes any difference (I have no idea). At 6ft 2in I add a bit of wind resistance so I'd expect shorter riders to get better economy if they were on my bike. Only mod here is the Yoshi slip-on, ie no airbox modes, plugs, sprockets, etc. Although I probably will put a 44 tooth on the back when it comes time (rather than 43) and leave the front standard at 18.

Re: Gus's Fuel Run
When my girlfriend and i did the Tassie trip , we did 8,500 kls in 3 weeks .So when you have to fill TWO BIKES every fill up economy becomes
important . 300 kl run i couldnt care less either but 8,500 kls is a different matter .

Re: Gus's Fuel Run
Like above i'm not worried. As long as it gets me to where i'm going without paying any roadside tax i'm happy.
Re: Gus's Fuel Run
My tiger gets about the same as the bandit, maybe a bit more (on the wrong side) and it's got 1 less cylinder and 450cc less. Duno what your worried about.

Gus's Fuel run
If I unplug the Tuner The fuel economy go down the toilet. 230ks to the tank. My guess is it's still running too rich. I think that's why the muffler is getting red hot. Too much unburn't fuel in the exhaust. When I turn it off , the exhaust system ticks away for up to 5 minutes.

Re: Gus's Fuel Run
Id take it to someone who knows what they are doing .Havent got something getting sucked into the air box have you ? Sure sound like way
too much unburnt fuel getting spat out .What type of air filter have you got ,condition ?
Too all all the rest of you fuel suckers who say fuel useage doesnt matter . Would you buy a Bandit with a 10 ltr tank ?
If im on a trip from QLD to Vic (used to be twice a year ) you soon get tired of playing "race games " .
Then again, 30 years ago i left Vico with a friend ( bike each ) . I like to do around 1,000kls a day .After 200 kls he said "thats enough for me "
We realised we were bad travelling partners ,shook hands and i never saw him again.

Re: Gus's Fuel Run
Gus, on a trip what’s an acceptable time in the saddle before you feel like a stretch?
I reckon 3hrs would be enough for most people so a fuel stop every 300km or so shouldn’t be unrealistic.
Your ex mate who called it quits after 200km is pretty soft but it depends on the experience level and the bike he was on. Knowing he was in for a trip he should have been better prepared than that, or said straight out he wasn’t up for it. You did the right thing by riding your own ride.
I’d ride with you and pass you as you’re pushing the bandit into the next servo

Re: Gus's Fuel Run
Hmm, my FA is stock apart from a Givi and decent seat (thks Mr Narc) and kept an eye on fuel economy a few times (now done 9K in 10 MTHS). One occasion, trip into work and back, trip to Bendigo with the cheese & kisses, trip back with a 47L Givi full of dresses, (the things you have to do to get a CBX into the stable...), managed to get 368 K with a fill indicating about .8L left, speedo mostly about 115~120 (so take about 8% off for real world). Very happy with that, but, I don’t have this for fuel economy as I like the fact the big S is generally incognito with the constant ability to give me a smile and make my arse pucker (only for good...). I maintain the 1200/1250 is a bloody excellent average mount. My two bob anyway... stay safe & upright!
