Time to plan the next overnight ride - 29-30 Oct at Bathurst near Neville
First topic message reminder :
Ok you guys, time to think about the next overnighter.
We've been South and North and since there is no snorkel mod for the Bandit, that leaves West. I'm thinkingNeville Bathurst, where I know many of us have stayed before so we know it's a great spot.
IMO riding in a large group is over-rated but socialising in a large group deserves its reputation. So.. I'm thinking several groups from different directions converging onNeville Bathurst for a spot of beer judging.
It's early days so please feel free to put in a suggestion.
Here is the report of my previous Neville ride with maps.

If you're travelling along the Mudgee road from Lithgow the turnoff to Rylstone is about 70km or so from Lithgow... then about 20km from the turnoff (Kandos/Rylstone) - from Rylstone you can go into Mudgee from Rylstone without having to go back down through Kandos. A nice ride with reasonable roads...

That sounds about right, Globe hotel good. Has everyone got contact numbers so no one gets left out? I've got Baz's number and I've shared mine with a number of people. I'll PM boatz in a sec.
Re: Time to plan the next overnight ride - 29-30 Oct at Bathurst near Neville
I have your number Peter. I might front up to the Globe myself for lunch.

Depending on what time people were thinking they'd leave Rylstone I'd head out there as well... but as I'll be leaving Katoomba late I think most of you will want to be on your way to Bathurst by then..

Re: Time to plan the next overnight ride - 29-30 Oct at Bathurst near Neville
Great! Every thing is coming together nicely, now, if only the weather cooperates. I suspect at this stage it will be good enough Saturday morning to sucker us into setting out and then it will be wash-cycle all the way. Hope I'm wrong.
I suppose we'll need an hour at Rylstone, from there we can decide on a direct or indirect route to Bathurst depending on time.
At random, I have chosen The Railway hotel (157 Havannah Street, Bathurst ) as the meeting place, unless someone has a better idea.
http://maps.google.com.au/maps?q=157+Havannah+Street,+Bathurst+NSW&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&hnear=157+Havannah+St,+Bathurst+New+South+Wales+2795&gl=au&t=m&z=16&vpsrc=0
Not really random because I looked for one away from the centre of town so parking would not be a problem, but I'm happy to bow to local knowledge if anyone has some.

Just heading off, and appears to be raining in Bathurst.
Re: Time to plan the next overnight ride - 29-30 Oct at Bathurst near Neville
There is a band of rain heading east. It lasted about 90 mins here in Canberra and the radar is showing not much coming behind it. I am hoping we have missed the worst of it. Anyone coming from the east is going to get wet.

Re: Time to plan the next overnight ride - 29-30 Oct at Bathurst near Neville
Grover and I just got back into Canberra (~2.30pm). Didin't stop for lunch after a latish and big brekkie in Oberon. Great ride, great folks - thoroughly enjoyed it - thanks Peter for the opportunity.
Here's a couple of piccies. Saturday, we had some drizzle on the Canberra side of Boorowa and again a heavy but short shower 50km from Bathurst. Riding from Boorowa to Cowra, we took one of Bear's Great Rides (Frogmore - Woodstock). Well it might have been a great ride if the bridge hadn't been out for maintenance and a 500m side track put in place to divert the traffic around - just add water and you have a muddy slop. We'd gotten about half way along when Grover did the sensible thing and went off the right side of the track whilst saving a tail end loose in the mud (better than having the Bandit horizontal in the mud). No problems, it didn't go over on its side - great skill to keep it upright though Grover. We soon dragged it back onto the hard stuff. But the photo shows how fragile the surface was - you can see where our boots broke up the surface mud even moving the bike. It was really bloody slippery and not easy to spot which parts had a solid surface or just a shell with mud underneath.
OK so far but just over the rise was a huge patch of chopped up muddy track - couldn't possibly get the Bandits through on the gravel (mud) so had to revert to the grass for 30m or so. You can see the slop on the left. So the Bandit is now officially an Adventure bike! Well the grass probably helped clean off some of the mud.
And one last one in Bathurst this morning before we departed. A bit of a shower that had us putting on the wet weather gear but of course, it then didn't rain once we were underway. So the wet weather gear was packed away again at Oberon.
Now I'm off to clean up the beast. Thanks again Peter for a great overnighter. Next time, we must find a brand of red wine that doesn't evaporate when the bottle is opened.

Home and hosed, we only got some light showers, missed a storm in Newcastle that went through before we got here and just beat another one here.
Hope every one else did so well.
Report to follow, when I'm rested.

i got back about 2.30pm as well. funny thing that seeing as when I turned up on saturday at the Globe Hotel in Rylstone 1 minute later Boatz turned up and then 3 minutes later Peter & Dave fronted up.
It was great to meet Bruce & Sue, that was a wonderful ride between Oberon & Mt Victoria.
Thanks Peter and to all for making a great riding weekend.
at the GLobe Hotel which we didn't eat at, we ate at the other pub
after meeting up at the globe, Boatz went on to Mudgee and the rest is headed to Sofala then Bathurst.
beside the Turon River, we had to ride own little goat track to get to but nothing like Ewok & GRover had to put up with

Re: Time to plan the next overnight ride - 29-30 Oct at Bathurst near Neville
Home soon after midday after a great weekend and company. Excellent ride up from Oberon to Katoomba with BAZ and with Suzanne behind me (Pillion) - Very lucky to miss all the rain going both to Bathurst via Oberon yesterday and then today home to Katoomba.. Saw some heavy showers lurking all around us at times but surprisingly 'hughey' held off whilst we were riding! Pretty glad too that I wasn't with the Canberra clan riders who decided to take a "Leyland Bros. adventure" on their way up yesterday - I'm pretty sure that with Suzanne on the back I would have had both of us caked in and rolling around in the mud - and the bike on its side .
Fun to meet all you guys and have a few drops of the amber lubricating oil mixed with a little red last night! Glad I didn't have too much though (was up all night pi#$ing as it was! - small bladders must come with age...)
A few photos of the group before we disbanded at Bathurst, then waiting for breakfast at the "Monkee tree cafe" Oberon and gearing up to leave there.
Getting ready to leave Bathurst
Still getting ready to leave Bathurst
Waiting for breakfast at Oberon - Monkee Tree Cafe
About to go our separate ways from Oberon
See you all next trip - Can't wait!

Re: Time to plan the next overnight ride - 29-30 Oct at Bathurst near Neville
Thanks everyone for a great ride with great company. Sorry, no photos from me. I took my camera but the battery was flat.
That 'detour' up a farm track near Frogmore was challenging, even scary in places, but great fun. My bike and I were covered in mud from Ewok's rooster tails. Our back tyres (and boots) had a half-inch coating of mud and traction was impossible in places, you just had to try and ride the clutch smoothly and keep some momentum while wresling the 'bars to keep it all upright. The first bit was slippery and, as Ewok said, deceiving in its appearance. What looked like hard packed dirt would break open and reveal slimey mud underneath.
Thanks again Ewok for the hand in pulling the bike off the dirt hump that was hidden in the grass. It wasn't easy, especially when we were slipping and sliding on foot.
After my off road diversion to ride out the slide, I said to Ewok that it could be worse, at least the track is not all cut up from cars. We rounded the next corner and the track was chopped to pieces for 50 metres. After dismounting and checking it out on foot, we decided the only option was to go completely off road!
The Bandit makes a decent, if heavy, adventure bike.
the rest of the road from Frogmore to Cowra looked like it had been maintained by the Country Women's Association who had decided to patchwork the road in little squares. I am not kidding, there were strectches were you couldn't actually see any original surface, just a sea of patches and pot holes. It made for fun riding at spirited speeds through nice sweepers.
We did a lap of Mt Panorama which was fun to see the track and how much concrete barrier surrounds it. Scary.
A great night at the pub in Bathurst with more reds enjoyed back at the Abercrombie Motel. The lady there is like a female Basil Faulty. It is obvious she hates her job and everyone that comes with it, giving substandard, reluctant service with a moan or a few sharp words. Never going back there again (without a tin of petrol).
Sunday's ride was great, with the run from Oberon to Goulburn a highlight. Some tight twisties, flowing sweepers and great scenery making for a great run at good speeds. Although I felt pretty scratchy all morning even after the biggest coffee I could buy. It must have been something I ate the night before.
A great way to spend the weekend. Thanks to Re-cycled and NotBandit for providing the genesis of the ride and throwing open the invitation. Great to meet Bhoffo and Suzanne, very nice people. As always, great to see Baz who rides more than anyone I know. Big thanks to Ewok for making a great travelling companion once again. Let's try a ride without rain and mud next time mate.
Now I've got to clean the bike and put my new Yoshi on.
Thanks again all. See you next time folks.

Bathurst Bandit Meet 29-30th October 2011
Thanks to every one who showed up at Bathurst, Baz, Bhoffo and Suzanne, Ewok1958, Grover and Notbandit. Special, honourable mention to Boatz who travelled down from Mudgee and back just to join us at Rylstone for lunch.
Dave and I had a remarkably good run, managed pick a gap in the rain front on the way to Bathurst only getting a few spots on the visor.
A bee took exception to being lodged between my collar and my neck and stung me, not far from home, thanks Dave for your sting extraction services.
We didn't get more than a quick shower on the way home, although it was obvious we missed some heavy falls in places, and found out we arrived in Newcastle after one big storm and about 30mins before another, talk about timing.
Baz spotted this dart board at the Rystone Hotel where we had lunch.
He's so photogenic.
I decided to go down to what looked like the local picnic/swimming hole on the Turon River, turned out to be quite a challenging and steep little track, was glad Baz didn't drop his bike would've felt guilty because the other 2 followed me.
As I guessed ,though, it was a good spot for some photos.
You know you're in the country when......
There are free-range chooks grazing near your Motel.
From left to right "Baz", "Grover", "Ewok1958", "Bhoffo" and Suzanne.
We visited the "Rotary Lookout" near Kandos, didn't seem any different to the normal reciprocating ones.
It was great to meet so many people with discerning taste in motorcycles.
Let's do it again soon.
