LOW SPEED HIT & RUN ON HIGHWAY
Johannesburg, South Africa, 16:30, Tue 31 Mar.
I’m riding returning from the funeral of Dirk du Plooy, a gentleman among gentlemen.
The N3 is bumper-to-bumper. Our lane moves while the neighbouring lane sits, then our lane grinds to a halt and the neighbouring lane begins moving.
Suddenly…
BANG!
In a blur, my bike is on the ground. I’m knocked right off the bike.
WTF…???
The ** who hit me didn’t stop. The highway is wall upon wall of cars. Could be ANY ONE of them.
With effort I pick the bike up. There’s plastic on the tarmac.
The bike starts. Revs to the top because the handlebar end is bent, forming a friction lock. The grip isn’t too tightly locked to shut. The revs drop to idle.
I know I SHOULD have gone from car to car looking for witnesses, etc. But it’s peak-peak-peak traffic, the whole thing happened so fast it’s a blur, and if I stay stationery on this highway I’ll become tripe.
With little enough choice I mount the Suzuki and set off. Thankfully the bike still works. More thankfully still, so does my carcass. Here and there it hurts a bit but overall I'm not really injured.
I get home safely. The bike’s comprehensively insured (learning from past mistakes...!) so there shouldn’t be any prob getting it repaired. He connected me on the exhaust canister and the damage is cosmetic, which is expensive but not fundamental. I doubt there’ll be any bent frame or fork issues.
But some ** hit me, KNEW he’d hit me, and did a runner.
