Credit card takes a hit .
First topic message reminder :
Why is it you seem to find good things when you are skint . Never mind ,I still think the $2000 was well spent . Also it was only 5 hrs drive away .
AS it came . Suzuki gsxr 1100 , 1987 slab side .Been in a shed for 6 years , unloved but not seized .New owner had powder coated wheels , bought
new disks and $400 worth of bearings and seals .THen bought 2 gsxr 750's and lost interest in this one .

Re: Credit card takes a hit .
With all the pieces around the benches I forget to get 4 new spark plugs . If it has been sitting in a shed for 6 years it might help . Luckily the shed was a long way from salt air .
Time came to get it started even with the old plugs .I was just about to give up when she catches and shoots out black soot from the exhaust .
Not much of an idle happening but revs nicely .
I crack a beer and take a photo , quite happy with myself . Photo is a bit flattering with painwork .

Well done Gus. If the previous owner reads your post, he'll be feeling a bit down! Great job on restoring an old beast to life again.

The fairing finish is poor ,looks nice in the pic though .
The top clear coat is pealing ,the tank has petrol stains and Alloy frame is pitted .
If I can get it rideable I can work on all that later . Brake lines are shot ,soo much lever travel .Spent the day bleeding brakes ,clutch and fixing blinkers .

Re: Credit card takes a hit .
Have you checked the valve clearances yet?
While your in there, have a good look at the cams, and see if there`s any pitting on them. It can be a common problem with them.
I assume, that's not original km`s on the dash, if it is, its had a hard life.
I`ve got an old set of 750 cams off the DOT heads, from the 88/89 models, which have the biggest lift and duration out of any of the SACS engines, and there pretty stuffed.
You can still get cams for these. I bought brand new 89 1100 cams for my bike when I rebuilt it.
I`m going to slowly stock up on things like this, while I still can, as it won`t be too long before they stop suppling them. They won`t do it for ever, and they`ll be worth money down the track as well.
I assume your going to pull the carbs and clean them...while your in there, remember to look at the emulsion tubes, and check for ovalling, as I`m sure you know, this will play a big part of tune if they`re stuffed.

Re: Credit card takes a hit .
Depends which one is registered gets to Tassi .lol
The gsxr had a backward step today . I had it running but it was all over the place . Then it stopped and refused to start again .
I was trying not to pull the carbs apart but they are on the bench for a look tomorrow .
The float bowl height looked very small but at the moment i'm not sure what is correct .

Re: Credit card takes a hit .
After 3 days of head scratching ,cleaning every connection , carb clean and adjustment ,valve adjustment it would still not start easily or idle .Starter clutch was banging its head off .
I was getting spark but was backfiring and rough before konking out .I starting to run out of ideas .
I checked the leads were not around the wrong was 1-2-3-4 all good .But
The lead marked 1 was exiting the rhs of the coil and 4 was exiting the lhs of the coil so they crossed over themselves . The other coil was the same .
This meant the wiring should also be around the other way . Of coarse I wired them up as per Suzuki diagram , not in reverse ..
Hit the button, bike starts ,no backfiring , settles into an idle . Fn chuffed , I was starting to think bent valves .

Seems like these projects are not a challenge anymore - how about your next project you do it blindfolded?

No challenge eh .Read on .
How to set a Gsxr 1100 on FIRE .
Take a bank of carbs that unbeknown have stuffed needle and seats .Set tank to PRIME ,then ON ,and attempt to start . After about 6 goes ,remove
plugs and notice plugs are wet .
Think, "plugs are wet so must be no spark".
Put 4 plugs into caps and lay on top of motor to check spark .
Press starter button .
2 plug holes shoot out a spray of petrol 2 foot into air .
4 plugs have great spark because they ignite the atomised fuel with a
WOOOOFFFFFFF
Success, your bike is now on fire .
No damage, but a smell of burnt hair in the air .
