1200 bandit mystery sickness
First topic message reminder :
hey there bandits and riders , Great forum Ive been a reader for a few years not much of a writer but ill give it a go .Kundalini has a problem , not my hand its doing ok but my bandit is not .Now it was going great no perfect up untill I decided to tinker .what happed next I started with buying new battery cleaned k n filter drained carby bowls and checked filter in fuel tank. After this I start her up she only fires on numbers 1& 2 cylinders so I check all electrics, new plugs new fuel . figure out theres no petrol getting to cylinders 4 and 3 .plugs are dry and clean 1&2 plug are not .fuel levels in bowls are equal .pulled carbs out stripped them found nothing all clean , slipped them back in sill same problem has compression in all pots .so at this stage the carbs are pulled out again and ive stripped them right down .looking at buing some new gear 110 mains 17.5 pilots needles have 5 slots the clips are now at 4 down from the top , thanks for reading , any advice would be great thanks,

Re: 1200 bandit mystery sickness
Having said that. I think one coil feeds one and four, the other two and three.
So if one and two are not firing it's not down to one coil.

Re: 1200 bandit mystery sickness
Left coil fires 1&4 Right 2 and 3
Left coil has white and orange wires ,
Just because you see spark on plugs don't believe they are GOOD ,. Get new plugs if no difference you have spares .
Check float heights should be 17mm
Remove drain screws ,turn to prime ,fuel coming out of ALL holes ?
Make sure throttle cables are LOOSE ,you don't want the pull cable opening the carbs at all

Re: 1200 bandit mystery sickness
Copy that gus , you say float height 17 mm , mine were 11mm but have bent them to 13mm measuring them up side down? Ive had it with the carbies they are back in the bike with no leaks ,still starts and runs on 2 cylinders piston 1and 2. Ive checked all electrical connections coils , coil pickup all check out good , so I have just purchased bandit 600 ecu cdi black box unit from poland EBAY 60 bucks delivered fingers crossed

Re: 1200 bandit mystery sickness
Id put it all back togeather.
Crank it over but without coils hooked up.
Pull all plugs to see if they are all wet.
If they are its not fuel.
You have compression so thats good.
Next is spark. You have new plugs so next thing id try would be coils before cdi.
I have spare coils to try. Pity you are so far away. You can buy them for about $40ea on fleabay.
ps.
ive found that a plug that isnt worn, looks absolutely fine and would fire outside the cylinder would breakdown and stop firing after onky a few moments of cleaning and starting. (when I worked at the ford factory years ago, we had a spark plug cleaning bench that you could sand blast the plug, blast it with clean air and then hook it up to a test lead and watch it spark away)
my 1200 had a problem of dead cylinders on idle. much head scratching and swapping of parts, checking ohms of coils, leads, pickup, tps setting. finally my new plugs arrived. changed them out. started up fine.
tweaked the pilots and base idle... no more hanging idle speed, no chugging from running on 3 or 2 cylinders. idled perfectly. gave me a chubby to listen to it.
pps make sure that the balance screws havent been disturbed. you may have two cylinders throttle butterflies completely closed? maybe the master one between 2 and 3 which changes the throttle angle between the two pair on 1&2 and 3&4. this could cause the no go on pots 1&2.
im keen to see how you go. if you have a set of vac gauges hook them up and start it.
even if its not running on all 4 pots it will show vacuum and this could indicate if there is an issue. If 1 & 2 are showing high in relation to 3 & 4, meaning the butterfly is either closed or as close to as the vac port is downstream of the butterfly and is subject to cylinder negative pressure rather than upstream and subject to airbox / atmospheric pressure. its an absolute prick to get the caps off and back on especially if you have satchquatch hands.

Re: 1200 bandit mystery sickness
I feel for you, kundalini.
I have a similar situation with a 1200.
Bought a complete spare bike, after trying a spare cdi, to swap parts.
I actually had her running sweet and when I bolted the main fuse assembly back into position, lhs below seat, she wouldn't start again.
I have swapped parts known to be good, because the spare bike runs with them, and still I have a gremlin.
Frustration is a Bandit.

Re: 1200 bandit mystery sickness
I am after some more knowledgeable advice fellas, I spent the afternoon with the suzuki checking electricals , I found that 1 & 2 spark plugs fire a sharp thin spark while 3 & 4 plugs spark is a fat large round whitish ark .I then change 3 & 4 plugs to irridiums , started it up bloody thing sounded much better and stronger but was still only running on 1 & 2 cyl . I then checked coils secondary resistance should be 30 - 40 omhs both my coils tested 25 omhs .so now me tinking of new coils .bloody funny was talking to bike mechanic this the other day I explained a few symptoms and he was saying maybe carby problemo , he also gave me an earfull said shouldn't have touched it , shouda taken it straight in to de bloodey shop. Looks like iam doing it the hard way.

Re: 1200 bandit mystery sickness
Did you swap the coils around to see if the issue moves. ie if firing on cyl 1&4, switch coils around, does 2&3 now fire ?

Re: 1200 bandit mystery sickness
Hey ironman , I made a error last post , what I meant was I put irridiums in 1 and 2 cyls and I thought was running better , but have since put new plugs back in still runs ok on 2 cylinders I took it for a run down the road playing with choke but no go . Tried your test with plugs hard to tell none were really wet ? Iam going to test that again before I take it to mechanic

breakthrough
Theres been a breakthrough,
Swapped coils LT+ leads plugs on coils from 1&4 coil to 2&3 coil
Jesus wept
The problem moved
Result cylinders 3&4 are firing and1&2 are dead
So I guess new coils are needed
Would that be right , bit brain dead at the moment:?:

Re: 1200 bandit mystery sickness
Found the problem
New coils arrived today
Fitted to bike
No change still misfiring
I will admit I am stubborn, persistent and dumb as dogshit
I also did not lisen carefully to advice given to me on this forum
So I confess the f_____ problem
I had 3 & 4 plug caps on wrong way the whole time
Because the firing order is 1 2 4 3 , I believed that to be the order for the plug cap .
I'm pounded my head all day
The bandit Is firring on all cylinders now but running a little rough
Carbies coughing a bit
Going out to shed now to headbutt the bandit

Finally the bandit flys again , I picked it up from the bikeshop they tuned the carbs and replaced a dud spark plug .mate it goes like a bat out of hell , in first gear and 2nd front wheel launches up in the air like it wants to go into orbit, goes really good all threw the rev range good powerband very happy.

Good news on the successful fix. Were you grinning like an idiot when your arms pulled from their sockets due to the groin moistening superior torque from the robust and indestructable underrated b1200?

Re: 1200 bandit mystery sickness
Thanks for the feedback, I have the entire front fairing removed naked forks, thinking maybe I might leave it naked.its a different bike with naked front, being a bit lighter a the front it really gets up and boogies, I am sure its got more power now after I changed carby jets mains 105 and mid jets 17.5 , bike mechanic its a little bit rich but goes good.next job is test it out down a quarter mile run somewhere .
