Great Southern Ride
Being as our Northern brothers can't wait for the next national event. I was thinking of an event for the southern states.
Tailored for VIC, SA and Tassie but open to all.
Where; Mansfield Victoria
When; March 2014
Mansfield offers plenty of accommodation in the off ski season, plus has plenty of pubs, shops and restaurants to choose from.
Close to the allegedly awesome Eildon-Jamison rd. The renowned Mansfield-Whitfied rd and the road to Mt Buller.
Also getting to Mansfield for those coming from or through Melbourne can include either the Black or Reefton Spurs

Hope it doesn't clash with Hammy's ride. If it doesn't I'm in.

Being as this is too close to the Northern Ride to Drake it might be better to put it off of awhile.
Any suggestions for an alternative date?

Realistically how many of our northern brothers (sisters?) will come down for it?madmax wrote:Being as this is too close to the Northern Ride to Drake it might be better to put it off of awhile.

I say lock in a date and run with it.
I'm developing our work roster today that will run until Jul 14.
I'm on Fire standby the weeks starting;
Feb 24, Mar 17, April 7 and every 3 weeks either side of those dates.
I'll let you know the weekends I'm working when the roster is approved but its not planned for the standby weekends at this stage.
Re: Great Southern Ride
Its not so much as the northern brothers coming down for it, although they are more than welcome. Its the southerners heading up for the Northern ride, myself included.
There seems to be a distinct lack of appeal for this one and I'm hoping its because of the clash.

Ok fair enough Brian. Didn't think of the trip north.madmax wrote:Its not so much as the northern brothers coming down for it, although they are more than welcome. Its the southerners heading up for the Northern ride, myself included.

Re: Great Southern Ride
That's home range territory for me, but I'm a bit like 2wheelsagain. Anything can come up, any time, but there is no "season" as such and Winter is blocked off - sacrosanct. (and no, I don't dislike the cold, rather the opposite)
Just pick a date, after sounding people out a bit, then publish early, for the planners. I've got to run with opportunities and impulses. Anything is possible, but you never know.
Mansfield is good. Jamieson has a good brewery. Lots of good rides in the area.

Re: Great Southern Ride
Because of the Drake ride it makes it awkward to place it before winter.
A good part of April has the school holidays, no good. Then there's the ANZAC day weekend (ok by me) after that May we're taking pot luck with the weather. Later than that we entering ski season.
What do you think?

Re: Great Southern Ride
I'd be happy with 22nd March if it is after Drake, or even before if there is a suitable date. Easy for me as I have no pesky work commitments - the Australia day Long Weekend in January and last two weekends in Feb and 15 and 29 March are no good though. Other than that, I'm good to go.

Mansfield. I can do that Feb/March. I could be there, if it happens. Don't need much of an excuse.
So far there is nothing on the calendar, but this is the time of year when it starts to fill fast. Social events often have to the a back seat.
I'll have to be a maybe. March is like next year for me.

Re: Great Southern Ride
Just having a brief look around for accommodation options.
The Commercial Hotel, located on High St (Maroondah Hwy) in the heart of town. Offers 6 only pub style rooms with shared bathroom facilities for $40 head per night.
Commercial Hotel
The rooms range from single rooms to family rooms that can accommodate up to 6 people
The Mansfield Travellers Lodge also located on High street. Offers motel style rooms for $120 per person of $130 twin share.
Mansfield Travellers Lodge
The High Country Holiday Park, located in town on Ultimo St. Offers caravan park style cabins from $90-$150 per night based on 2 people, extra adults per room run at $15-$20 per night
Holiday Park
The holiday park can work out quite cheap if we choose to book an 8 berth cabin and share the cost. ($150 + $20 x 5 = $250 / 7 adults = $35.7 each) for 5 of us it works out at $42
Unlike what happened in Cowra, I would prefer too see us all booked into the same place.

I'm happy to go with the majority. Being central, you'd have to assume they are close to a pub.

Re: Great Southern Ride
That's why I looked at those three. Three different types of accommodation all close to required amenities
The caravan park is the furthest from the 3 main pubs in town but is still only 550 metres walk
The the travel lodge is about 300

Re: Great Southern Ride
I have the long weekend free and 29th & 30th.
Every other weekend I'm either working (for days off) or on standby (for money).
17th to 24th is out but other "mid week" dates I can work with if we're not confined to a weekend.
I'm happy to hook up with any Melb or eastern crew at Healesville or anywhere from Nilma really.

And here I was thinking we'd locked in the weekend of the 7-8-9
