Will be going away to north east Arnhem Land.

Is there anything I should do with the bike, ie disconnect the battery etc

Yep, dis-connect the battery. Make sure you have a full tank of fuel. That will stop the chance of any surface rust forming in the tank.

Have you got a good friend that you can trust to come around and start it up every few days ?

6 weeks is nothing. Mine sat for 10 with only the occasional start.
Put it on the center stand though.

Petrol treatment for the fuel, unleaded does go off. Battery should be fine assuming you have nothing connected directly to it. My GS500 sat for 12 weeks after my accident (on the Bandit) absolutely untouched and started first time without any battery boost required.

Fuel won't go off in that time. I have had my boat sit for up to 18 months and used the same fuel with no probs. Mind it has a big 2 stroke on the back and auto mix oil. I have read that unleaded does go off but am unsure as to the timeframe. Question

I reckon the majority of motorcycles probably sit for more than 6 weeks between rides. It's nothing really, but a full tank and a battery tender won't hurt.

Like 2wheels said, 6 weeks is nothing. Just top the tank up to the brim and she should be fine. Maybe disconnect the battery.
