Can i answer anyway .Imho a drill is not powerfull enough .Its awkward ,will only run a small mop , and will not have the "guts " to do larger
pieces you will want to do .
What you want is a bench grinder with a grinding wheel one end and a 6"(approx ) cloth mop on the other . Not the hard heshan type or the soft lambswool either .Most of them have what they are best at on the packageing .

Bench grinder are cheap $60 the mops are nearly as much $40 .You will also need a polishing block (solid block of polish ) get the white one for alloy .
$9 ?.

The bench grinder will give you the power you need .to polish anything . Mine is an 6" grinder and works fine but in the next life bigger i'd go bigger .
You will wonder how you lived with out one .I polish the carbon parts on mine as well as alloy cases .
Most bolt heads once you start polishing go dull and rusty quickly .Better to replace with stainless allen heads . Polish those and it will last .

Pretty it aint but the most used tool i have .(bar none Laughing )Ryobi about 20 years old ,never missed a beat .

D.B s the polish guru ,his stuff is like chrome . Differant mops for differant cutting
compounds is the go but one will do .Just be concious that a mop will hold extra-cut
when useing a polish . I might to day buy another mop just for final polish compound
to do the carbon bits .

To get a good polish you really have to go through the grades of paper .Not jumping
too much . 400 - 600 -800 -1200 grit is good wet ,heavyer grit (220 ) dry .
I polish surfboards at work (my polishes arnt great ,bloody people rub wax on them so
i carn see the point ) Mad

I bought a small kit from Bunnings, Chris, that I found useful. I contains a mandrel for the electric drill, a hard mop, a cloth mop and a small block of both a cutting compound and a polishing compound. I did my forks in situ and one thing I discovered was not to apply too much compound to the buff, just touch it briefly. Hearing protection is also a good idea.

Thanks Peter. I shall investigate these in the short term Smile

What the hell are you folks talking about? What are we polishing? If it is the bike how do you get it up onto the work bench? and I thought that a mandrel was an African monkey. Question Question

The name Mandrill was found to be politically incorrect by the Society for the Placement of Pants on Humphrey and I believe they are now referred to as Personages.

Thanks Peter for clearing that up I had it confused with the South American Tapir which as I am sure you know are often mistaken for Pigs and Anteaters and rarely used for polishing outside Amazonia though they do have a rough tongue not unlike the Three Toed Sloth also of that region and sure to be found in any workshop you may come across on the banks of the Orinoco River.

Cheers.

I do believe you meant "touché" with the use of the "accent Acute"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acute_accent

If we are to be accurate, we must get these things right.

"Touché" to you Messieurs. Smile

I did, and do. But I would'nt have a clue how to put that little thing above the "e". Computer skills very basic. Neutral

ps. And if it's French, then I dont give a rats how you spell it.

Simple Hammy, copy and paste, I had no idea how to put the accent Acute on top of a vowel so I simply copied it from Wikipedia (If you type Touche Wikipedia will spell it with the accent in situ) but there is another way if you are pedantic enough to seek it out and obviously I am.
