Re: New Michelin tyre - Pilot Road 3
From here, a rear tyre USD 173 plus shipping, and a front one for USD 138.
So, both for USD 311 plus USD 75 shipping. This is below $400 in AUD delivered!!! RRP in Australia around $560
How much for fitting?

At those prices why isnt everyone doing it. Is this new or the dollar thing ,sounds too good to be true. Any down-side apart from fitting??

One of the local shops here fits tyres for 10 bucks, so those pr11s are looking good. I love the Pirelli Angels but that price is great.

Re: New Michelin tyre - Pilot Road 3
Because tyres are a type of product that people would rather not buy. We must buy tyres because we have to and we usually post pone the purchase till last minute. Once the fitted tyres start to disintegrate, we would usually do some minor shop around and because tyres are shot to pieces, would ride to the nearest dealer with relatively reasonable prices and fit the tyres whilst you wait.gus wrote:At those prices why isnt everyone doing it. I can't see that most people would anticipate that tyres will be past use by date in X amount of time and plan to purchase them on the net allowing delivery times, then take the bike and the tyres to the dealer to fit them.
It is by far simpler just to ride in and splash some extra cash.

Re: New Michelin tyre - Pilot Road 3
in my case, I purchased the pures as the tires on the Ninja are shot, & while my thumbs all wrapped up & it's off the road it's a great chance to score some cheap rubber.
Re: New Michelin tyre - Pilot Road 3
I had 2 pairs Bridgestone 023 delivered from Jake Wilson in 3 days. Price was awesome. Gus there are no downsides. Get in now before some asshole in government decides to stop it from happening.

Re: New Michelin tyre - Pilot Road 3
Coming back from WA last weekend and I bought a copy of the pommie Bike mag (April 2011 edition). Good mag IMO. Better still, they were doing a test of popular tyre brands in the wet (looked really wet from the piccies). And the even better bit - they were using a couple of GSX-1250FA's as the test bikes.
The test is worth a read for anyone who rides in the rain. They make no comment on durability, longevity or dry weather performance (that wasn't the reason for the test). The PR3's were the only tyre to score 5/5 stars. The tester's comments:
"The best yet, by miles. More confidence and outright grip. I could confidently drag my knee through inch-deep puddles every lap. The GSX1250 is a 257kg bike and these are road tyres. It was alarming at first, as I've oonly found this level of wet weather grip before with wets and without the movement you get from the blocks on a racing wet. These are the best road tyres I've used in the wet. They tick every box."
The PR2's scored 3/5 stars and I'm not going to type out the comments!

They do sound good.
I'm happy with the PR2 on the rear but the PR3 is an option for the front soon.

Re: New Michelin tyre - Pilot Road 3
The amazing thing is that Michelin claim slightly better milage than the PR2, so win-win.

Re: New Michelin tyre - Pilot Road 3
Why is it i have never seen a road tyre worn all the way round .They always have tread left on the sides and bald in the middle . I did a trip back
from Tas. so now i have a square tyre with plenty of tread ,but handles crap. Can i have PR2 centre but softer sides . We do have corners up
here but we have straights to get to them.

Thats a PR 3 pair gus
PR2's are
Fornt 120
Rear 142
262
post 338
If you buy 2 pairs at the same time it's only 85 postage for both so it's heaps cheaper. I went halves with my brother and it was half the price of tyres locally in WA

Re: New Michelin tyre - Pilot Road 3
What would you normally expect to pay for a shop to fit a tyre for you if you were supplying the tyre yourself?
Reason I ask is I want to find out if its worth buying tyres myself (a pair of PR3s is just over $400 delivered from AU) and get a dealer to fit them or just buy them from a dealer.
I'm going to ask my dealer tomorrow, but would like to know something before going in completely blind.

Re: New Michelin tyre - Pilot Road 3
Some shops just charge the going labour rate, $75 - $85 per hour or whatever their rate is. If you'd had a service done at that shop, you'll know what their labour rate is. Mick Cole in Bega charges tyre fitment at regular rates.

Re: New Michelin tyre - Pilot Road 3
It saved me $120 by buying PR3 tyres from Jake wilson and having the local bike shop fit them, at $20 each. Place at Mitchell in ACT fits them for $15 each.

Re: New Michelin tyre - Pilot Road 3
Just had PR3s supplied, fitted and balanced for $480, I thought that was reasonable given that the workshop gets good wraps and they allow you to watch the whole time. I'm very particular about who works on my bikes after some bad experiences, so I don't mind paying a premium for peace of mind.
BTW, very happy with them as well, put about 250kms into them after fitting and they were brilliant for what I am after.

Yes they seem to be a good tyre TOG. I have a new set on my 1250. The 1200 had the PR2's, and I could not fault them. BTW. What pressures are you running ?

Re: New Michelin tyre - Pilot Road 3
Mick at MCBT suggested 38PSI F&R as a starting point. He said he's been getting good reports from PR3 users with those settings for both longevity and handling. I had 38psi in them Sunday and couldn't fault them at all. Also have PR2s on the GS500 and cannot fault them, part of the reason I decided to go PR3s on the Bandit.
