So how long before I need to fit a new chain & sprockets? I have 38,000 on the clock, have adjusted the tension once, and there is no sign of wear on the sprockets.

It all depends on the rider. If you accelerate hard or smoothly. Engine braking. Lubrication. All plays a part. You can get a fare indication when you have your rear wheel off. Hold the chain in both hands and try to move it side to side. You will feel if there is any wear. Always replace sprockets at the same time that you replace the chain. Even if the sprockets look ok they will still be out with a brand new chain, and could effect the life of the chain.

when I had my Blackbird with a scottoiler fitted I managed over 90,000km's on the original chain and sprockets before I sold the bike

And rarely needed to adjust it sure they make a little bit of a mess but it just wipes off really easily with a soft rag

Keep it lubed and clean  and adjusted properly and the original equipment will serve you well

I'm about 36,000km now and I adjusted mine a couple of times in the first 5,000 and I don't think its been done more than once since.
I still subscribe to the theory that the recommended specs are too tight by about 10mm.

I replaced mine at 40,000kms when I put new tyres on.  It might have had something left in it but not much.

I replace mine at about 30,000km. You don't think it needs doing until you do it and the change is very noticeable. After 40k km, the rear sprocket will definitely be a bit worn and the chain will likely have some loose/tight spots.

If you are tight, you can probably drag it out to twice that.
