OK, dates are settled, like I mentioned earlier, we'll keep this new thread for facts, eg: what is set in concrete, hopefully that way we wont have to sieve through pages of discussion to work out what is happening.
Please keep all discussion, ideas etc to the original topic so we can keep this clean
Dec 7th/8th - Ferry to Tas
Dec 8th - 16th, Tour of Tassie (details to be finalised)
Dec 16th/17th - Ferry to Melbourne
Confirmed
From the BIG Isle

Edit: slight change of dates to fir in with Barry's travel commitments. Leaving a bit later and traveling anti clockwise instead of clockwise

Doubt I'll make it after MotoGP at Sepang international Raceway and then a few days in Singapore at this stage . But if I do I might have to send my bike over and get a flight I reckon.

No one opposed the idea when I mentioned it in the original thread, and you were the 1st to reply.
I had to search back 2 pages and 59 posts to find that post now, this was exactly what I was trying to avoid
.
Chook wrote:Talking with mm a couple of weeks ago we both though it was time to start looking at locking in some dates for this proposed trip.
My New Years Resolution for 2018 is to try and make this National Meet happen, so here goes..............
I've been informed by my daughter I MUST be in Adelaide December 1 for her dance concert, a Dad's got to do what a Dad's got to do.
That would mean the earliest I can get away from here is a shorter part day stint Sunday 2nd and a full day to Melbourne Monday 3rd or I could just do a full 800 km plus Monday.
How would the evening of Tuesday 4th or Wednesday 5th work for others as a boarding day? Or would later be better? I guess the latest departure date is dependant on how much time we need to be back home with family for Xmas
Questions for barry_mcki and Gus, or others that have already done Tasmania
- After a night on the boat, how far are we going to want to travel on the 1st day? Do we make it a rest day, a short day or just go?
- How much time do we need on the Apple Isle to do a full circuit, relaxed enough to make it really enjoyable?
- What are the "Must See" places?
Bookings have now opened for December 2018
Mon 3rd to Fri 7th are all 7:30 pm departures, Sat 8th has 2, a 9:00 am and a 9:00 pm
https://www.spiritoftasmania.com.au/sailing-fares/sailing-schedule
I think once (if) we set a date in concrete we'll start another topic for the set in concrete information and keep using this for discussion, it'll be a lot easier to find info later then.

Is there any chance you can move these last 3 posts to tghe original thread
cheers

Re: 2018 SBA Forum "Nearly" a National Meet - "Tour of Tassie" Dec 7th - 17th (including Ferry)
The remainder of the accommodation is sorted in Tassie
Decemeber 13 & 14
A Airbnb cottage in West Launceston, a 10 min walk from the Launceston CBD
December 15
Hillsview, the BarryMc Resort
If anyone decides to make a late decision and join us,
Saturday 8th, Bischoff Hotel Waratah still had heaps of rooms when I booked a couple of weeks ago
Sunday 9th, Empire Hotel Queenstown also had rooms when I booked the same day
Monday 10 - Wednesday12 Rosetta (Hobart) the house has a sofa bed in the lounge room someone else could use (I'd have to confirm extra cos with owner) or you could source your own accommodation, there is plenty and Airbnb is pretty cheap
Thursday 13 Friday 14 our cottage is fully taken but there is a pub down the end of our street with rooms above, the pub also has a apartment across the road that it rents out and is vacant atm
If there is no more takers Barry and I will still have a great time

I really wanted to go to Tas.
Not more than two weeks after you suggested this ride, my good mate asked if I wanted to do the GP. He's never ridden down to the GP from QLD, so it was one or the other..
GP won out.
Hope you have a good time.

Ohh yeah....I realize the closeness.
Just got back today. Could almost see it from Phillip.
When time and money is talking, it had to be one or the other.
I'll get there one day.

Bike serviced,
new tyres,
1 pannier full of all of my winter gear, (that'll get posted home from Melbourne before I pick my daughter up at the Airport)
The other with enough clothes for 5 days (I'll post some of that home from Hobart, won't need as much after that()
Leaving home Thursday, glad I haven't pushed myself too hard, under 500 km to Horsham, forecast 38 so that'll be a long enough day
Friday, minimum 23, max 39 for Horsham, then 36 max for Melbourne with a cool change and thunderstorms in the afternoon, hopefully I'm in Melbourne before that hits

I've got DriRider Nordic pants, liners for both my jacket and pants, the overboots I bought when we were in Sydney last year (I've still only tried them on, might get worn in anger this trip) Aldi base layer top and pants, Aldi merino mid layer top, Aldi baklava and neck warmer, that lot alone nearly fills 1 of my panniers, then I've got my Storm Jacket and pants as a quick get to in my tank bag
Seems crazy packing all that in December and high 30's trip to Melbourne for the first 2 days

Saturday morning in Devonport has a minimum of 13 and the max everywhere we are planning on riding that day is between 19-21
Waratah the morning after is a min of 9 with about 19-20 for a max where we are going
...... and no rain forecast for those 2 day , here's hoping they're right!

Baz Za an I are on the boat 1/2 way across Port Phillip Bay, last 2 days on the road have been stinking hot, looking forward to some cooler weather over the next few days.
Caught up with madmax and his better half for a while in St Kilda and they gave us a escort to the ship
Just feasted on the all you can eat buffet, better value than what is expect in a captive environment.
Still in Port Phillip Bay, not far away from bed

Baz and I both got home this week, Baz Tuesday, me (with my daughter pillion from Melbourne on Wednesday.
While we were away we caught up with madmax and his lovely better half Kim in Melbourne before we caught the boat, spanna was meant to be there too but ended up a no show having to deal with some inconsiderate pricks boiler breakdown on a stinking hot day.
We managed to catch up with Gus at his small slice of paradise in the Huon Valley, and the day before we left Tasmania made it to barry_mcki's in Northern Tas where we spent our last night
One bit of advice I regret listening to, "8 days will be more than enough", sorry, 9 days wasn't nearly enough to do everything, see everything we'd like to have seen, I don't think a full fortnight would be enough.
I think we learn't a lot for a round 2 visit (which is going to happen), setting up for 3 nights as a base in Hobart and 2 in Launceston was great, I think another 2 nights in the middle of Tas for 2 or 3 nights would be good as well.
I'll do an ride report when I've got a bit more time
