What Octane for GSX1250 FA ?
Hi
When I dropped my 2015 model off at the dealer today to get the starter motor sorted he took it for a quick
ride to check the gear changing...I think it changes gear like a Tractor.
First thing he came back and say...your running it on 91 octane aren't you.
Why yes I am I reply.
So it is pinging like mad he says
You must run it on 98 octane.
Well I cant say I noticed any pinging but maybe I don't load it hard up in the lower gears...getting old you know.
So what is the recommend octane for the 2015 GSX1250FA ?
Thanks
Richard

Ah Richard, you young pup. I can barely remember 65! I'm on a 1200 Bandit but always use 98 octane maybe suckered in by all the ads that talk about running clean and frightened by Gus's photos of cleaning gunk off mesh filters.

I always use 95 in my 1250 ..............I don't notice much difference when using 98 & it's cheaper

Re: What Octane for GSX1250 FA ?
Hi
I found it in the service manual
91 octane minimum
So I would have though that today's modern bike would have changed their ignition settings..on the fly...to remove any pinging.
Is that not true?
As my warranty runs out soon should I be telling them.."you said it is pinging...91 octane is OK to use so you guys have yet another issue
that needs sorting out under warranty" ?
Thanks
Richard

At the very least Richard I would be wanting an explanation from them. All the best with it.

Hi
Just emailed them and showed them the min fuel specs in the manual.
Their reply was...."Yes it can run on 91, but it’s a high compression fuel injected engine that ideally likes a higher octane fuel.
There is no issue with your bike regarding the fuel, it will just run better with a higher octane petrol, as with other 1250’s I’ve ridden."
So was it pinging? who knows.
Thanks
Richard

High compression engine, bullsh..
The Suzuki GSX1250FA runs 10.5 to 1 compression, that compares with other Suzuki models like:
Hayabusa 12.5 to 1
GSX R750 12.5 to 1
RM-Z450 12.5 to 1,
even the V-Strom 1000 is 11.3 to 1
Then, if you go to Yamaha ....... YZF-R1 13.0 to 1, now that's a high compression engine.

Re: What Octane for GSX1250 FA ?
Hi
I was waiting for him to go in to some long explanation about how 98 octane is so much better.
Well with a background in 2 strokes I know all about detonation and it's causes and cures.
To be honest I got the feeling that they might have been looking for a way to put the blame for certain things back on me...just my gut feeling.
Don't know why they would both...it is warranty work and I would think Suzuki has to cover the dealers cost.
So I will see what the bike is like when I get it back.
Thanks
Richard

Re: What Octane for GSX1250 FA ?
It is complete rubbish that it is a "high compression" engine. It sounds like every second thing that guy says is bullshit, maybe all of what he says. And I have used 91, 95 and 98 in my bike over 87,000kms. My verdict - it makes not one jot of difference to how the bike runs. I now only run 91 unless the pump doesn't work or is empty. A 10.5:1 compression motor will not ping unless the timing is ridiculously out - and how can that happen on a 1250? Hi verdict that it was pinging is further evidence of the crap he sprouts. Time to find a different mechanic.

Re: What Octane for GSX1250 FA ?
When i bought mine the dealer recommended 95 or 98 for all fuel injected bikes.
But I've run it on any unleaded barring e10.
Not noticed any difference.
Give the bike a balanced and varied diet.

2007 GSF1250S Bog standard apart from a Megacycle can. I tried different fuels. I really did. It really doesn't seem to run any bettor or worse, so I just run 91.
I think it crackles a little more on the overrun on higher octane. Is the sound worth the extra? I think not There is no appreciable difference in the amount of fuel it uses.
