gsx1250 reserve
Hey all
Just wondering about this reserve trip meter. I know it starts when theres 5.5 litres left in the tank but it counts up not down so how many Ks can I expect to get before I run out of petrol? Apparently there's a second warning when you've got one litre left which could be pretty annoying!!
Its a pretty confusing system. Any one know?
Cheers.

THe system is crap big time .About 100 kls +- when you get first warning .About 17Kls +- at last warning .
I hate this gauge .100 is to early and 17 to late . Give me one warning with 50 kls left .

I know for sure that I have about 55k after the bowser starts flashing and then it's time to get nervous. When I finally get around to it I'm gonna put a 5L jerrycan in the givi and go up the freeway until the bike runs out.

Re: gsx1250 reserve
has any one here ever put their bike on the centre stand and drained their tank, then put the fuel back in at a litre at a time to know for sure how their gauge actually reads? I know you fuel injected guys don`t have reserve valve, only gauge,so thats one way to find out how it reads. because i`ve got carbs and have reserve valve,i did the drain thing to know whats in my tank. i`ve got 5.4L left when reserve is turned on. so if you know your fuel milage, you can work how far you can safely get

Re: gsx1250 reserve
This reserve meter is the worst feature on my bike and I seriously do not rely on it.
I was always taught with FI that you should never let the level drop below 1/4 of a tank and to this day I have subscribed to that theory. I always try and time my breaks around fill ups using that theory and have only come close to running on fumes twice both in the small hours and no where from any where. Not a nice ride when you have to be concious of everything you do affecting the distance lol even slowing down your breathing

Re: gsx1250 reserve
On my 2008 its meant to have a 19 litre tank. I bank on getting around 80km on average on each 'bar' shown on the gauge. When you're down to the last one the little 'bowser' symbol starts to flash and I reckon then that I should definitely be filling up.. I'm pretty sure that when the last 'bar' starts to flash you're meant to have 1.5 litres left... so provided it's accurate that's about 30km... I've checked the remainder in the tank when I fill up and it seems pretty accurate when you're into that last bar..
I usually hope to get at least 350km from a tank but have broken the 400km mark a few times..

I dont know what all this fuss is about guys. You have TWO trip meters. Just zero one each time you refuel, easy. It's not rocket science.

But but but that requires pressing buttons!!!! I like the reserve meter, on the 1400, I have to manually reset trip 2 to give me the same funtionality.Hammy wrote:You have TWO trip meters. Just zero one each time you refuel, easy. It's not rocket science.

I agree, I've always done this, in the car as well.
I use to hate the GSX fuel gauge, but I'm use to it now.
5 litres is what my last bike had in reserve and you had to flick over the tap. The first time that happened I couldn't find it
So when you think about it the Bandit gauges are pretty much the same you get a warning when you would have been turning the tap to reserve anyway.
The thing I don't understand is the bikes meant to have a 19L tank, so after riding 30-50ks on reserve how come I sometimes only get 12.5 - 13L in?

I use the trip meters religiously... The gauge in or on anything is really just a guide... as I mentioned in an above post I can pretty well estimate what I'll get with each bar on the gauge; but that's through experience on 'my' bike.... doesn't mean that all are calibrated exactly the same.. so it comes back to experience in tracking how far you have travelled (via the trip meter) and measuring how much fuel you pump in at the next refill...

Re: gsx1250 reserve
Who wants to stop when you have 100 + kls left in the tank .Range varies also due to many reasons .I used to think a good days ride was
1300 kls .I'm not going to do that mileage stopping for fuel every 200 kls . Filling up takes valuable time ,i hate stopping on a long trip .
I have cut back, its normally 900 kls now if i can get Carol to stop ,fast she isnt, but she's tough ,and on a 790 Bonnie .

Re: gsx1250 reserve
I used to be exactly the same Gus. Ride until I was running on vapours. Jan has the old tap reserve system on her V Star and will not switch it over. She once had an issue with some bad fuel after filling up at an outback servo, so she is very wary. Over the course of a day, it will not mean any more than 1-2 more stops on a long journey, so what the heck I would sooner do one more stop, than be stuck on the side of the road with an empty tank.
