Headlight (Low Beam) stopped working Empty Headlight (Low Beam) stopped working

New to Bandit ownership, returning rider, and still a little clueless.

My new (to me) 1997 1200 Bandit has those streetfighter twin headlight units. The low beam stopped working so i went and bought a new globe, but that didn't fix it.
Tomorrow i'll take the tank and seat off and have a good look at the innards, but i could use a few pointers.

Do these bikes use relays for the headlights?
The high beam must run through the left-hand switchblock because there's a switch, but do the low beam wires go there as well? Or straight back to a relay or fuse box?
Would the appropriate fuse be for both lights, or might there be one for low and another for high beam?

I recently returned from living overseas, with nothing but a backpack, so i have almost no tools. I just bought a mini-tester and some zip ties from JayCar, and a can of "Servisol Electrical Clean and Lube" which i plan to spray just about everywhere...
Should i buy another can for the bedroom?

Cheers,
Matt

This might not be the exact model but should point you in the right direction, no relays and separate fuses for high and low. Does the high come on when you press the "passing" switch ?

You might be lucky & find a loose wire if it has after market lights ....................( p.s. you can never have too much cleaner & lube in the bedroom  Laughing )

Hey Barry, thanks a bunch - for the diagram and the advice.
The high beam comes on with the switch but NOT the passing button.
And as i say, the low beam won't come on at all.

If the wiring hasn't been stuffed up, and the low fuse is okay, it's sounding like dirty/corroded contacts in the left hand combo switch. Although there's a slim chance it could be the hi/lo switch itself, the connector contacts are more likely to be at fault.

I'm going to have a fiddle after work today.
Before i do, i might as well have some spare fuses on hand - can anyone tell me what to buy?
I don't even know what type or what amps; glass tube, plug-in, etc.
I'm in the CBD so i can go to Jaycar at lunchtime.

Grabbed this of an eBay listing for a 2001 1200, so if your 1997 model is the same, looks like you need the blue 15 amp standard plug-in type for the hi and lo beam fuses:

Ah ha!
'Twas da fuse, stoopid.
All working now, thanks comrades.

But my Clarkson-esque celebrations at fixing something were short-lived; when i re-parked the bike and smacked the mudguard, breaking it and bending the speedo sensor - D'oh!

Bent the speedo sensor back into shape, and the mudguard is re-attached firmly, just missing a big chunk. It was too big anyway...

I look forward to asking many more dumb questions and botching many more repairs, with the help of this forum.

Cheers,
Matt
