bandit 600 been sitting for 3 years
First topic message reminder :
Hey everyone not sure if this is the right section for this but here goes... So I picked up my bandit yesterday and it has been sitting for 3 years. What things should I look for or pay special attention to?? ( I'll put more pics up as I get them)

Re: bandit 600 been sitting for 3 years
Sorry for the thread steal but I'm trying to get my old KLR going after sitting for a few yrs with half a tank of fuel in it.mtbeerwah wrote:also, check inside the fuel tank for signs of rust, as this will eventually work its way into your fuel bowls, and clog your pilot jets.
New plugs. While the plugs are out, wouldn`t hurt to turn it over with the plugs are out, so that oil is getting pumped through the engine before it fires.
Carby may give you grief with dried O-rings and dried gunk through out the carb. Not saying it will, but it may end up needing a good clean
Any tips for cleaning the inside of the fuel tank. I can't see any serious surface rust, it may just be dirty as it comes off when I rub it. The fuel was a shade off black when I emptied it. Some web experts suggest vinegar?

I haven't heard of it being used for cleaning a fuel tank but Vinegar is a bloody good cleaner so it could possibly work
Re: bandit 600 been sitting for 3 years
Vinegar is a form of acetic acid. Approx 5% acid, the rest is water. Adding salt increases the potency of the acid, somewhat.
Unsure if I would want to contaminate fuel tank with it, as it is mainly water.
I would probably try using small amounts of fresh fuel and shaking the sh#t out of it. Discard and repeat.
The fresh fuel will act as a solvent to the stale fuel.

OK fresh fuel it is and shake shake shake.
If I can get the old KLR going again it will be my biggest mechanical achievement I have undertaken by myself. Hooked up the batteries today and have dash lights so I am thinking the electrics should be good to go. Next is the fuel and oils and then start kicking her over . . .

The inside of your tank may be dirty, but so will be your carburetor.
A strip and clean with carb cleaner (available at any auto store) will prevent hours of frustration.
Make sure those jets aren't blocked.

Thanks Bosco, I had thought of that.
Hmm Stripping a carby is a bit out of my league - I'll need to build up the courage.

If you are competent enough to remove and clean your fuel tank, then cleaning carb should be achievable. 8-)
Google to the rescue. A video tutorial on klr 650.
You didn't say what your bike was.
