I intend fitting mirror extenders (block type) to a 2010 1250S. Do the retaining bolts screw into captive nuts or separate nuts requiring the fairing inners to be removed? I intend to cut a groove into the block to let the wiring pass through.

cheers

Wiring? I assume your fitting mirrors with built in indicators?

Yes the mirrors bolt into captive (welded) nuts

I can't seem to find the 2010 and onwards cowling frame listed in  any of my parts sites, so I am assuming it is the same as the 2007 even though the bikini fairing is different.

Anyway, when I installed my extender blocks the first time I had trouble getting one of the bolts to tighten up, it seemed to be bottoming out.

What I found was the two nuts are on a small piece of metal welded to the top of the cowling frame, one has nothing behind it, the other is positioned over the frame tubing, it was the inside of this tubing that was stopping the bolt from going any further, a slightly shorter bolt fixed the issue.

Interesting Barry.  I did not have that problem with my 2010 Bandit as the bolts that came with the extender blocks were the correct lengths.  cheers

Thanks for the speedy replies and information. AS a follow up question - what thread size and length are the standard bolts?

I ran into trouble with the bolt lengths when I changed from the extender-block style to the Metric Metal version, I used the bolts that came with the blocks, however the base part on the MM units are a lot thinner:

The MM units give a fraction longer length, but overall a lot more options in the movement, I've found I can get them a bit lower that allows a better view (for me).  I did try fitting both but the block and the MM but felt there was a little too much stress on the captive nuts.
