Compression tester ....
I part traded an sv 650 which I am real happy with .Luckily ,I now know its NOT all about size .
Thing is ,it has 94,000 kls on it .Heaven knows how I will ever sell it on if the time comes . I have no idea of the history of the bike but someone has cared for it ,seeing it runs very well and in excellent nick .I was (am) curious to know what the compression is to see if its tired (as could be expected ) or it
had a "freshen up" it its past life .
I brought this compression tester from S\Cheap on the way home . $64
They had 2 other types .
One had press on stem that was too short to access a motorcycle plug .$49
One that had a screw in adapter only .They can get jammed into place as engine cools and shrinks .(yes I had it happen )$55
Both useless .
This one looks like it will do the job .
The bits I need for tomorrows test

Re: Compression tester ....
I have and prefer the screw in type. The push in type might be alright for working on a bike but with a car you'd need two people to carry out the test. Unless you hook up a remote starter switch.
I've never had mine stuck, but then I take it out straight away

Re: Compression tester ....
This also has the screw in type . Maybe the one I had a problem with was missing the o-ring
and I screwed it in too tight .This one has 2 different size plug adapter . One tiny one large ,
I think a bike plug might be medium ( figures )
The sv plugs should be easy to get at being an L
The Bandit on the other hand might be awkward .
I'll test it on the Bonnie first as the plugs are out in the open .

Even at 94000 ks I would think that it should not have needed a set of rings or any other cylinder work yet. Remember that's not even 60,000 miles. ( young ones are shaking their heads ). Good tool to have in the shed though.

If you ever do get stuck. I hear a bucket of cold water will do the trick.

When I had my SV, I was on the SV down under forum. There were a couple of people on there that had over 120,000 km on their 650's that haden't touched them. I think you'll find they are a strong little motor Gus

Re: Compression tester ....
Did the com test today .Motor warm ,throttle wide open .
Both read 200 psi .
I believe 150psi is about as low as you want so I'm very happy .
A screw in type would have been easier but both screw ins were too large for the sv's tiny plugs .
I'm sure if I sell this bike the purchaser will try to knock me down on the $3000 I need because of the high mile-age .At least now I can say "yes its high , but 200psi compensates
for that so no I wont take $2500."

Re: Compression tester ....
I ended up gutting on old plug so there was a hole through the middle (no porcelain ) and a 5mm only thread below an 0-ring. I got it to screw ( badly ,but there is an o-ring ) onto the brass end . Giving me the right size screw in . The straight
push on is awkward because of frame ect .

Re: Compression tester ....
I have the same model Kaupy. Cheap as off ebay but works well enough.
Caution though - like other guys have already said I very nearly got the plughole adapter stuck in the head of a ZZR 250.
Suggestion - screw the plughole adapter on to the extension really, really well and seat the adapter into the plughole much less weller or the extension unscrews from the adapter leaving you with the age old problem of "how the fuck am I going to get that outta there???"

Yep. That's the one of ebay. $35. Could make one for that. Not bad quality either. Haven't used it yet. Been doing a lot of bike engine rebuilds. Got 3 on the go at the moment. All trailbikes, a 450 quad and a jetski motor sitting on the floor.

Talking of eBay sales:
Must come with it's own meth lab......at least the postage is free....
But wait, it gets better, his site is littered with gems like:
And he's sold 14 of them, now that's just down right strange......

Re: Compression tester ....
I messaged a different seller once and asked why his price was so ridiculously high, he replied and told me they were out of stock. Maybe the same in this case
I don't know why, if they're out of stock they don't just take the add down.
Pity the person who doesn't notice, ouch!

Re: Compression tester ....
I'm sure you're right MM. The 20x poly electric fence posts I bought last week at $70 are now listed at $700. When you go in to the ad it advises they are temporarily out of stock. Must be some logic somewhere.
