Great Cycle Challenge
As well as my passion for motorcycling and riding my Bandit nearly daily I also ride my push bike daily. About 10 months ago after a kick up the bum from my GP I dusted off my old mountain bike and started riding to get fitter and lose some weight, since Dec I've done just under 7000km on it.
When I saw this advertised I thought it suited me as I am clocking up plenty of KM's, but on my old bike I'm too slow to compete directly with other cyclists, this way I can keep a bit fitter, do it at my pace and hopefully make a difference to a great cause at the same time.
This October, I am riding in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!
I will be pedalling for 31 days and my goal is to ride 600km throughout the month. (I'm hoping to raise at least $500, if I can get to $1000 I'll bust my butt and try and do 1000km instead)
Why am I doing this? Because cancer is the largest killer of children from disease in Australia - 3 children die of cancer every week.
It will tough, but nothing compared to what these kids face every day as they battle this terrible disease.
Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.
And so I am taking on this personal challenge to raise funds to fight kids' cancer and give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.
But I need your help.
Please sponsor me to support my challenge and help these kids.
Any amount would be greatly appreciated, no matter how big or small.
To make a donation, simply view my page by clicking on the link below:
http://www.greatcyclechallenge.com.au/Riders/IanButton
All funds raised will support Children's Medical Research Institute to continue its work to develop treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer.
Thank you
Chook (Ian)

The GCC started yesterday, I headed out in the morning for a 20km ride before going to work later in the afternoon. Today I've got a 12:00 noon start so I'm heading off shortly to see how many km I can add before work, it's 10km there and back so hopefully by 9:00 tonight I'll have at least another 30km added to the total
Sponsorship has been pretty good hitting my target by the end of September. I've increased my target from $500 to $750, I've also bumped my target distance up to 250, hoping to do a lot more though.
Sponsoring is easy and as soon as you pay on the app an email arrives with your tax invoice, all donations $2 and over are deductable

Re: Great Cycle Challenge (2013, 2014, 2015,2016) and back in 2020
Yesterday I rode to work (noon start) the long way, 28 km in 29 degrees when I'm not really leg fit and certainly not used to near on 30 degree coming out of a southern winter.
My legs suffered all afternoon with cramp and I wasn't sure how the ride home would go, I took the nearly shortest route, about 11 km and with a tail wind behind me it wasn't too bad
I'm taking a rest from the bike today, off to help a mate move house, poor bastard was told the rental he was living in was up for sale and he had 12 weeks to move, that was about a month after learning that he had aggressive terminal cancer.

Sorry to hear about your mate. Cancer is such a horrible thing, takes the best from us.

Sunday we all went to the footy, SANFL 2nd semi, despite being drained from the move Jamie made it to the game and witnessed our beloved North Adelaide beat the only side we hadn't defeated all season to go directly into the Grand Final in 2 weeks time. Everyone was understandably over the moon, until yesterday when we received the new that another long term mate from our group had passed away during the nightmadmax wrote:Chook wrote:Yesterday I rode to work (noon start) the long way, 28 km in 29 degrees when I'm not really leg fit and certainly not used to near on 30 degree coming out of a southern winter.

Totally unexpected and he is only 58. 2020 bloody sucks!!
On a better note, I've managed to ride over 100km this moth and raised about $560

One week in and I've ridden 139km and had $560 is sponsorship donated
I haven't had a sponsor since the 1st, a couple more would be nice, it's for an awesome cause!!

With 11 days to go, this is where I'm at, I'm well over my 150km/$250 original target I set my self, it would be great to manage $1000 in sponsorship

2 days left to go and this is where I'm at
IIRC donations can be accepted for another couple of week
Saturday I should tip over the 500km mark, better than I thought I'd do as I certainly didn't have bike legs at the start of the month, tomorrow's going to be shit weather so perhaps a spiun sesion at the gym as a warm up will have to do
Thanks' to those that have supported me (not really me, it's supporting Kid's Cancer Research), it is much appreciated
