Great Cycle Challenge (2013, 2014, 2015,2016) and back in 2020
NOTE: Title edited
Great Cycle Challenge
As well as my passion for motorcycling and riding my Bandit nearly daily I also ride my push bike daily. About 10 months ago after a kick up the bum from my GP I dusted off my old mountain bike and started riding to get fitter and lose some weight, since Dec I've done just under 7000km on it.
When I saw this advertised I thought it suited me as I am clocking up plenty of KM's, but on my old bike I'm too slow to compete directly with other cyclists, this way I can keep a bit fitter, do it at my pace and hopefully make a difference to a great cause at the same time.
This October, I am riding in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!
I will be pedalling for 31 days and my goal is to ride 600km throughout the month. (I'm hoping to raise at least $500, if I can get to $1000 I'll bust my butt and try and do 1000km instead)
Why am I doing this? Because cancer is the largest killer of children from disease in Australia - 3 children die of cancer every week.
It will tough, but nothing compared to what these kids face every day as they battle this terrible disease.
Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.
And so I am taking on this personal challenge to raise funds to fight kids' cancer and give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.
But I need your help.
Please sponsor me to support my challenge and help these kids.
Any amount would be greatly appreciated, no matter how big or small.
To make a donation, simply view my page by clicking on the link below:
http://www.greatcyclechallenge.com.au/Riders/IanButton
All funds raised will support Children's Medical Research Institute to continue its work to develop treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer.
Thank you

Re: Great Cycle Challenge (2013, 2014, 2015,2016) and back in 2020
Thanks to everyone who has already donated money for the Children's Medical Research Institute for Cancer Research.
So far, 7 days out from the start of the Great Cycle Challenge and I've just hit my target of $500.
If I can raise double my target by the October 15th I'll do my best to match it a km per dollar raised instead of my target 600km, $1000 = 1000km

Despite being away for work with no bike for 3 nights I still managed to clock up 911km on the trusty old mountain bike in October, I also raised $740 for my efforts. The Bandit is feeling happier this week, no longer left in the shed neglected while I was riding the pedalled variety

Good effort, Ian! If I had seen this post in September I would have donated something for the cause.

I've just bit the bullet and re registered for 2014, same as last year, trying to raise as much money as possible to help fight children's cancer.
Any donation no matter how small would be greatly appreciated and give me the motivation to try and clock up as many km as possible.
here's a link to my page, log in, have a look, have a laugh at the old bugger and his pushy and give generously

19 days in and just got home from a 48 km ride.
So far:
Raised $635 (out of a total $1,653,700)
Ridden 545 km (I reckon I should be able to count each km as 2 on a 20 year old steel framed mountain bike )

Re: Great Cycle Challenge (2013, 2014, 2015,2016) and back in 2020
I'm back again, just registered for the 2015 Great Cycle Challenge
This is for a great cause that needs lots of funding, donations $2 and over are tax deductible, anyone that wants to make a donation no matter how small or large, follow this link below, there are a few payment options available
At this stage I'll be back on my 20+yo mountain bike again although I am hoping to get something a bit sleeker and faster before October comes around, at the moment I've set a modest 500km/$500 target, I'l reassess both as time goes on

Re: Great Cycle Challenge (2013, 2014, 2015,2016) and back in 2020
I got started today, I'm away from home with no bike so it was off to the gym and a 30km ride on a spin cycle, I've raised $650 so far to help the fight against Kid's Cancer, looking forward to a "real" bike ride after I travel the 440km home tomorrow afternoon
Re: Great Cycle Challenge (2013, 2014, 2015,2016) and back in 2020
A week down and I've ridden 245km and raised $745, I bumped my targets up to 750km/$750 a few days, I reckon I should do the distance ok, hoping to crack $1K for the 1st time
Re: Great Cycle Challenge (2013, 2014, 2015,2016) and back in 2020
2 1/2 weeks into October and another 2 weeks of pedaling to go to go...............
I've managed to pedal 494 km so far but most importantly I've had great sponsors who have helped me raise $845 towards Kid's Cancer Research .
I've still got at least another 256km to pedal during October, it would be great if I could get another $155 in sponsorship and reach the $1000 mark for the 1st time.
Thank you very much to everyone who has supported me so far including a few from here, your support has been awesome and is much appreciated!!

531km after this mornings 37km ride and fundraising is up to $930 after a couple more very generous donations (1more from here)
Re: Great Cycle Challenge (2013, 2014, 2015,2016) and back in 2020
Only a week and a half left of my boring updates:
9 days to go, I've pedaled 635km so I've still got 100.5km to go until I reach my target, my fundraising is up to $934.
I'm confident I'll smash the distance but donations have dried right up, it'd be nice to crack the $1000 mark for the 1st time in the 3 years I've done this.
The combined effort by all riders so far is 1,293,680km and $2,164,792

I'm about to head out for a ride, hopefully I'll have 700 km up when I get home
My sponsors have blown me away, $1500 now, I never imagined I'd get close to that
............time to start pedalling to earn some of that sponsorship

Re: Great Cycle Challenge (2013, 2014, 2015,2016) and back in 2020
1/2 a day to go and just got back from a 30km ride, looks like I'm going out again this afternoon, I'm 4.5km short of 900km and 15,5 short of my best effort in 2013 (911km)
Re: Great Cycle Challenge (2013, 2014, 2015,2016) and back in 2020
That's it, I'm done!
I finished up on 916km, If I had a road bike I reckon I could have done 1200-1300 in the same time
I'm pretty sure donations can be made for at least the next few weeks, so far $1500 raised to help fight Kid's Cancer
