Super Quiet Exhaust
Guys
So I've just joined the bandit club with a 2011 GSX1250FA - I just love it and I must say it is just so quiet - big selling point for me. But then there is that large muffler... I have checked around the forum and there's plenty of stuff on here about different after market options but here's the question - is there an aftermarket option eg. Stainline, Yoshi etc which is just as quiet as stock but looks better (ie smaller/compact)... Yes that's right - I want it to be just as quiet - just look better! However, Iam a novice in all of this so I have no idea about pipes/cans etc - just that most of the talk is about a better sound or better "note" - I read louder.
So guys are there any options here?

I have a Yoshimura TRS, which with the baffle in is pretty quiet. Almost like stock, even. Stock is more strangled than muffled!

I also like the super quiet Bandit. I am staying with the orig muffler. It's a big one, agreed.
I like it as it says there is a BIG engine in there somewhere.

Most aftermarket cans come with removable baffles (sometimes referred to as "restrictors"). When they're fitted the noise isn't much louder than stock (still a bit louder though). Drop into a few bike shops if you can and see if there are any 2nd hand Bandits with after market cans and get the salesperson to start it up for you. Or just join a forum ride or two and hear what is on offer - many of us have changed the can.

Re: Super Quiet Exhaust
There's a reason its that big, and that's to make it quiet. If you want small your going to sacrifice sound as it will be louder. That said they all come with baffles and where most of us remove them you can keep it in and it will be reasonably quiet.
I've got a Staintune on mine and I removed the baffle as it rattled. The tone I have is IMO good not too loud not too soft.

A HUGE topic. Use the search option. Most people change cans for the following. Sound. Performance increase. Looks. Weight saving. There are so many options. Don't worry about it yet. Ride it for a while as it is. When you get a chance. Ride a Bandit that has an aftermarket can on and see for yourself.

This thread makes no sense. Can someone please try to explain it to me? It is making my head hurt.

Re: Super Quiet Exhaust
There are lots of different penis extenders available for the Bandit.
Without other mods you wont get much power increase but most after market mufflers will save you 5 - 10kg which is worth a couple of Jap ponies anyway.
My Beowulf is louder but would still be under the dec limit.

Re: Super Quiet Exhaust
g`day bloke,
contentious issue!!
I`ve got a noise maker on mine. But..before the noise, I got another standard pipe, and pulled it apart and modified it by making it the same size pipe all the way through, as "header"size is, as opposed to standard that has three different sizes to tail pipe, but still passed through two chambers.
What this achieved was a deeper note, not a scream, yet allowed it to breath.
To be honest, if I ever pull my finger out, i`ll try putting it back on to see if there`s any difference to the yosh, which I had dynoed, to see if they do make any difference, not just weight.

I have a quick question in relationship to changing mufflers. You say about power but what happened to your fuel economy?

Re: Super Quiet Exhaust
The change of can itself made no difference to my fuel economy. The dyno showed about a 7% increase in power and torque (with no dips across the rev band) and of course there was the weight saving. I've had no reason to believe that the bike needed any special tuning with the change of can but that's not to say you might gain something from doing so.

Re: Super Quiet Exhaust
after dyno (as this is what you should do when you alter the breathing of an engine)with different breathing can, I didn`t notice any difference in standard economy, only when I start getting up it.
If I want economy, I`ll buy a little turbo diesel new age 4 wheel thing that shits on bikes, with mid 3 litres / 100kms

You'll need to do a lot of kms for the 3L/100km to offset the cost of a diesel car.

Re: Super Quiet Exhaust
I put a Scorpion on my 1200 bandit and with the DB killer in it's not much louder than the standard pipe, it's certainly got a deeper note though. With the DB killer removed it is quite a bit louder than standard - which is what I wanted.

Re: Super Quiet Exhaust
Mine came with a Megacycle slip on. It's not loud, but you can hear it. Much smaller diameter than the stock can. I'd be concerned about pannier clearance with the stocker on it.
I test road an FA a little over a year ago, and the loudest thing was the cooling fans. I didn't like it.

If they can't hear you whilst in the cage, windows up, radio turned up, or kids screaming in the back seat, then they think it's a good excuse for knocking you off the bike.

And yet some still can't hear or see you.

Re: Super Quiet Exhaust
you could buy nearly 3 bandits to my Dualis Diesel or one ducati Multistrata and the damn thing better fuel economy than the bandit, as for exhausts my bandit breaths and goes a lot better without the standard pipe, but i've never been one to want to ride a sewing machine

Re: Super Quiet Exhaust
I have an akrapovic on a 1250.
according to akrapovic, it meets EU emissions and noise levels (with baffle in), it even comes with a certificate which is good for the EU but not australia.
it is quieter than stock with baffle in and gives you a couple of extra hp. lighter as well by half.
with baffle out, it is not much louder than with baffle in and I ended up with about 106hp, sounds good above 4000RPM.
Dyno checked and not running lean in stock setup, so a good thing in my book.
apparently the staintunes are also fairly quiet but louder than stock.
