Install Gear Shift Indicator... Help?
Hi Have one of these Magnetic Digital gear shift indicators to fit to my 1250s 2010 it has the 2 sensors , magnet, display and wiring... i sort of know where the sensors go etc, it the wiring of the "Neutral' wire that has me. Is that the wire that comes from the neutral indicator light ? if so is it easier to find at the back of the instrument cluster or somewhere else? The instructions are really crap. and for the + and - wires where is the best location to source these, at the instruments too... if so has anyone got the 'legend' or diagram for the instrument loom? Thanks in advance..

Do yourself a favour and buy a giPro. It's plug and play with no cutting or teaching the unit for an hour like some others (Acumen for one) on the market

Re: Install Gear Shift Indicator... Help?
thanks guys, not really addressing my questions.. i already have this unit so will persevere with insatliing it..I just want help with finding the neutral wire like I detailed in my first post. and if anyone else had this type of unit.. Like the other installs tho
Re: Install Gear Shift Indicator... Help?
I would agree with everyone else, the GiPro is a plug-n-play, it has the correct connectors and wiring, plus advantages that it is simple to install and there are no adjustments for different cogs, wheels, etc. It is hooked up to the gear position switch so you cannot get more accurate, there is conjecture on whether the TRE function actually does anthing for the Bandit or not, personaaly I have not noticed anything.
But to answer your questions, the neutral lamp is almost impossible to get at from the instrument cluster, it is within a plastic case that is attached to the circuit board, there are no obvious pins to attach to on the board. I do not have a pin-out of the dash plug, however it appears from the wiring diagram the neutral wire is the blue/black wire. This finds its way down to a couple of diodes at the fuse panel and then off to the gear position switch. I would be very wary of tapping into this if you are not confident in electrical wiring, you could short or damage the instument panel, the gear position switch and the ECU.
I would pick up hot and earth from a fused ignition only source off the tail lights.
I have not seen or read up on your type of unit, but from what you have discribed it is an awful lot of aditional trouble considering the almost factory install of the GiPro. Good luck.

Re: Install Gear Shift Indicator... Help?
Just did a bit more research on what I think you have on this UK Site: http://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=233459
It appears you need to connect an up sensor and a down sensor plus a magnet on the gear lever to tell when you have moved it up or down. This will be challenging, as well as the long term ruggedness is questionable.
The neutral wire is used to reset the unit each time you go past neutral so that it does not get too confused. The UK guys found you need a wire that goes to earth when neutral is selected, I am not sure if the Bandit wire is a switched earth or switched +12v, if it is the later you will need to feed the neutral wire to a relay or other solid state switch so you can get the correct earthing.
I love playing around with electronic gadgets, but I am affraid I would not be putting this type of unit on my bike, there are too many variable to get it setup, and I think that within 3 months something would come unstuck or out of tollereance.
IMHO, considering the much simpler alternative, this just does not seem worth the effort.

I think you won't look back in deciding to go with the GiPro. The hardest part of the install is deciding where to put the indicator.
Not sure where I got this shot, but this fellow has a small bracket made up that looks pretty smick. I have also seen it attached directly under the tach with the display facing slightly downwards - sounds a bit strange but as Gus points out they are a relatively large unit and by angling it this way you actually make it appear that the viewing area smaller whilst still keeping visibility.
Attached is a link to Maximum Suzuki - there are a couple of good photo's and hints: http://www.maximum-suzuki.com/forums/index.php?topic=63447.msg684150
The thread is a little old but the principle is still the same, cheers.

2000k's you need to ride it a bit more
New design looks pretty good. I did tell you to save the swearing and buy the GiPro. It's so easy to install and no mucking about.
P.S. This was the image you were trying to show

You just picked the wrong link. Once you have hosted a picture on Servimg.com you will see something like this view:
You grabed the top "Image" code that just puts in a link. You would normally take the "Image" as it is larger than the "Thumbnail" code from the "BBcode" then your picture will show up on the Board.
Also if you use the "Preview" when editing your post you should get a good idea of what it would look like when finished.
Sorry if this is a bit "egg sucking",
Cheers
Re: Install Gear Shift Indicator... Help?
How much you wanna sell the magnetic one for, 1200 has no gear position switch except neutral.
Re: Install Gear Shift Indicator... Help?
Sorry Peter .. sent it back to the supplier.. you can get them now on ebay for like $20
Re: Install Gear Shift Indicator... Help?
@ reddog.. The bike had 1700ks on it when I bought it and Ive done that much since.. Ive had a bung eye and I really shouldnt be riding or driving, also the bike almost fell over and as I caught it I tore the ligiments in my left hand so hard to use a clutch. that and the weather here on the goldie lately has been all adding up to keep me of the road. I am busting to do a decent ride. Gonna run down to Balina when I can.. anyway the bike is virtually still new!
Re: Install Gear Shift Indicator... Help?
I assume you can't get these things to do a plug and play install on a oil burning bandit?

That sounds handy. Where can you buy in Australia or did you get your overseas?
