There are some things that I wish I had done from the start. Putting on pod filters is one of them. Besides the peformance boost, the ease of access to the carbies is brilliant with no more f%^&ing airbox to worry about.

I spotted them on ebay, four for $26, including postage. I thought you get what you pay for, and even if they are totally unuseable I can always trick up my young bloke's tricycle with them. But at that price they're worth a look. They arrived from Hong Kong within a week. I was only half impressed looking at them in the flesh, the rubber adapter was fairly restrictive and the filter material on three of them didn't marry up to the end of the cone properly and needed a bit of silicone to sort that out.

I cut the middle of the adapter out and siliconed them to the base of the cones. The airbox was a bit of a bitch to get out, having to split it along the centre seem. One near new K&N filter now for sale. I thought that I'd have another month of rejetting dramas, but bike is running perfectly. The perfomance boost is phenomenal.

The engine noise is so sweet now, the ugly low induction noise from the airbox is gone. Hearing it was helped a lot from cutting the top 73mm off my double bubble screen, I can now actually hear the engine at over 100kph.

I was told to remove the airbox you need to remove the inlet rubbers and then it comes out with just a bit twisting or if you have a large amount of patience push the rubber into the airbox side and it can be removed

This is obviously not the case then

What are you doing for venting the rocker cover, catch can or a filter type breather


If it is running well i would suspect that the pods are slightly restrictive as when i put pods on my 1991 gsxr1100m i ended up by using 155 main jets and the needles on the 4th clip with a shim and i had to change the pilots as well as the float heights

Currently i have a holeshot stage 1 kit with 1.5" hole in the airbox lid with 112.5 mains 5ht clip and 1 shim and that runs very well ( Intake cam from gsxr 1100 k now installed as well )

But as i can't leave well enough alone i have ordered a stage 2 pod filter kit from holeshot and it is currently at customs clearing hopefully i will get it before the weekend Twisted Evil

The holeshot kit uses the k&n RU2922 pod filters and these filters are cheap on E-Bay less than $100 landed from the us

And yes the best part of pod filters is the huge jump in torque from around 70 ish lb/ft to around 90 ish lb/ft and the great induction noise that comes with it

It has been suggested that i could hit 125 to 130 rwhp with the cam and the pod filter set up when all tuned but i am more interested in torque and air/fuel ratios than bhp

last time i went to the drags it cost me a clutch ( Honda Blackbird ) and a towing fee to get home

I would need to get a new heavy duty clutch before i go to the drags ever again as i would hate to see the cost of the tow truck back to Gympie from Willowbank Shocked

I rode a mates Katana once with pods and it was an absolute dog .That was enough to turn me off them .
Obveiously you have yours sorted (or close to it ).I'll have to have a re-think about them . Very Happy

I have ridden in the rain that was heavy enough to slow traffic down to 40 km/h on the main hi-way and still had no problems with water ingestion with pods

Even when left to sit in the rain for hours the old gsxr 1100 used to fire right up and i was able to ride off no problems and they were very exposed

The 1200 bandit k series the pods are still quite hidden from the elements and if you wanted piece of mind you can get splash covers from a company called "outerwears" they are widely used in the r/c model world to keep air filters dry and also electronics whilst being breathable

From the side the pods can't be seen with the side covers on. I could try to hack the chrome bit off the side cover if I wanted to show the pods off.

When I took the airbox out I had it in my head that it wasn't going back in, so I wasn't worried about looking after it. If I had taken off one or two of the inlet rubbers it may have come out in one piece. I really should have bought the stage two with the K&N pods first up.

STI-REX did you get the timing advancer as well? I put the advancer in by itself before I rejetted the bike last year and it made a big difference.

There is an old saying "Be careful of what you wish for - you just might get it." The bandit clutch is only good for 120rwhp, so any more mods will require clutch work first (maybe before any more mods??). After only 200km the chain is stretched to buggery(not gentle hwy kms). My Metzler Z8 is only 6000km old, but its now starting to wear fast and square off. Powerstands are fun except when you're in traffic, in first or second gear sometimes they just happen when you don't want them to (when you do want them just twist..). Water on the pods isn't my main concern with the rain, the rear is breaking traction in the dry now. I am NEVER going to see 380km out of a tank anymore, 280km will be more like it.

On the plus side the bike handles perfectly and the power delivery is exactly what I wanted. The bottom end and midrange are great, it will purr happily at 40kmh in top gear. After 6500rpm it is a ridiculous rush and by just over 9000 the show is over. There is another 5-10hp if I wanted with head work, but unless I have to take the bike apart I won't be doing anything else, especially with $230+ clutch parts needed strait off.

I had pods on my Katana. The rain didnt worry them so much as the dust! IMHO, touring with pods = lots of maintenance Evil or Very Mad

Don't the chrome covers just unscrew from the side cover ?

Yes i have the advancer I bought it before i got the Stage 1 jet kit.

Unexpected power stands are always a bonus Twisted Evil just be wary of second gear as they are known to be a weak link when abused for too long

The clutch is just a consumable part in my book and will just expire ahead of its time
If the motor ever has to come out for anything it will be meeting with a boring bar and a new set of pistons, the ultimate torque upgrade

have bought a second set of pods so i don't have to wait while for them to dry after cleaning them just swap one pair out and clean the others re-oil them and then store them in a zip lock bag ready to go next time

And being able to change the air filter without taking the tank off is priceless.
If you are really careful about routing plug leads and under tank hoses you can even get the carbs out without taking the tank off also, it takes a bit of mucking around to set up but well worth the effort Very Happy

Whale oil beef hooked (say that quickly)! I don't know how many dozen times I've taken the side plates off - I've never noticed the screws for the chrome bit. Der. geek I'll have to start taking a few less beers into the shed with me to work on the bike.

I should have done the clutch up when I put the cam in. Consumable or not I don't want to get stuck down the coast or somewhere else far away from home.

Well i finally got around to doing this

First open package to reveal

Then remove airbox from bike to do this intact you need to remove 2 carb inlet rubbers and then remove carefully

Then remove the carbs and remove STG 1 jet kit and fit STG 2 jet kit ( needles , much bigger jets ,etc) and begin to reassemble

That's a bit like asking "how long is a piece of string?". Depends on exhaust system - headers and can, cam(s) profile, other engine mods, height above sea level and climate, etc, etc.



I have a holeshot stepped header and comp end can, gsxr intake cam, shaved and ported head, 520m above sea level. I got rid of the smaller pod filters in favour of K&N oval filters. My settings are #155 main, #17.5 pilot, 4.5turns out mixture, 1st clip from bottom with shim on the needle. I have timed the cams to 104deg In / 107deg Ex for bottom and mid range.



Best advice I can give is to get one of Dale Walker's stage 2 jet kits wit the K&N oval filters, the same as STI-REX. Comes with very clear intructions and tuning tips.
