OLD Bandit in UK do I ship it??
Hi everyone. Will be arriving in January to stay south of Perth. I have a 1200 Bandit unfaired and would like
to know if it would be worth bringing over. Noticed everything costs lots over in Oz so would it be a better option to bring it. Also noticed in bike mags not many 1200's out there.
Its an 1997 version but Im the second owner and I knew the first quite well.
Not sure of import tax shipping would be about $2000 I think and as I'd only get about £1200 back in UK I know bikes cost more over in Oz.
Anyone done this already??

firstly welcome.
Secondly, sorry, i cant help you on the metter.
if you wont be able to get enough for ur bandit in the uk to buy another over here. maybe its worth it. And also depends on if you are attached to the bike. i know i am. if i was going over seas, it would be hard to part with it, even though i can get one the same later on.

Re: OLD Bandit in UK do I ship it??
Welcome to here and to Aust mate.
If it were me I'd sell the 1200 for whatever I could get then buy another once you're settled here. There are loads of 1200's for sale here but you may decide on a different bike.
I dont know costs but I do know if you are the "owner" there is a streamlined import process but honestly for a bike worth $4 - 5,000 and not at all rare it may not be worth the hassle.
EDIT: Start your Aussie bike search here http://www.bikesales.com.au/

Re: OLD Bandit in UK do I ship it??
Hi thanks for the link, could only find 1 bike at $7500 in WA???(Bandit12)
I reckon the cost of shipping plus what ever tax is involved will make it more economical to ship it!!
say I get $2000 for my bike in UK they go for $5000 ++ in Oz! As I've had it for two years it should be OK to import in and I dont think it would attract much tax?? Still looking into this though, Xmas is a pain as everyone is off!!
Bah Humbug!
Well cheers for the input and will let you know how I get on!!

If you do decide to ship, I've heard good reports about this place:-
http://www.shipmybike.com.au/
No idea of pricing, but at least it's somewhere to start!

Dont worry about supply and cost. Perth is a smalland inflated used market.
The trick would be to Buy in Syd or Mel and freight it to Perth.
The whole Aust market is inflated compared to UK/Europe.
Expect to bend over a lot until you get used to it

Don't forget that 'importing' the bike is only the first step. You will need to get it registered. I can't speak for WA but in NSW this will involve a full check (roadworthy) of the vehicle to ensure it meets ADR's (Australian Design Regulations).
It'd be worth checking it out with the WA authorities before you make a decision.

And don’t forget you're legally up for a new helmet as apparently your head will explode if the lid doesn’t have an AS sticker on it regardless of it meeting or exceeding any other standards.
I've got a Banjo that says you will not be importing. Any takers?

Re: OLD Bandit in UK do I ship it??
I have recently imported my 2001 600K1 from the UK and would do it again in a heart beat. First of all it doesn't need to meet ADR if it's a personal import, ie: you have owned it for more than 12 months. Second of all shipping only cost me an extra £500 with my other furniture etc. The only tax you will have to pay is GST on the depreciated original purchase price. So all up including 3 month rego, it cost me about A£1500 to bring my bike home. By the time I sold it (£1000ish), transferred the cash, I would have A$2000-A$2500, what do you get for that? In my eyes it is an easy option if the bike is in good condition and it's something you want to use as the pound-dollar is crap and the sale of your bike won't buy much over here. The only down side is the Aussie authorities are slow and you need to chase them and there is heaps of paper work, get past that and it's worth the effort. Mine went through inspection an absolute breeze, even with a 'Zorstek' can on the back....no problems. If you want any more info, send me message and I will dig it all up. Just wished I had bought 2 home.

Re: OLD Bandit in UK do I ship it??
Not a big problem, main stream companies where at a bit of a loss, but the likes of Shannons and Insure My Ride where easy. I pay $325 a year, fully comp for a 38 year old in the suburbs. Given that my bike was not available in Oz, I thought it was a good price. The bike in question was available in Australia so I don't think it will be hard.

Who are you insured with? The last quote I got from Shannons was over $700, and I had to ring as they wouldn't give me an online quote. Insure my ride was $471. That's for an over 40, country NSW with rating 1, as a daily ride. QBE is around $350 and swann was roughly the same.

Re: OLD Bandit in UK do I ship it??
IMR wanted $550 or there abouts for my 1250 (rating 1 and in rural area) so I stuck with Swann and paid $357 agreed value @ $10,000

Lets see the bike imported and I'll show you
I'm sure you have one
Re: OLD Bandit in UK do I ship it??
I'm with 'Insure my Ride', 'Shannons' where about the $420ish range and 'QBE' was about the same. I had enough companies interested to make a choice, I explained the situation and those that where interested made the process easy.

Re: OLD Bandit in UK do I ship it??
Don't tempt me.
although, there is a Ye Olde English Lolly Shoppe in town. I asked them if they could get Harrogate Toffee and Kendal Mint Cake. they'd heard of the toffee, but I had to explain the mint cake. They said that because I was the only person who'd ever asked for it they wouldn't order it specially for me. Bstrds. So I bought I shyte load of licorice and humbugs instead.
