First topic message reminder :

I did a search but didn't find anything.....

My B1250 has started to have a real clunk when the starter engages. I'm slightly perplexed but its consistent. Anything I can check?
Anyone know how these things work? Its going in for the 24k service next week.

This just causes a magnetic lockup when exposed to current.
The shop has never seen a starter in that condition and isnt prepared to guess at a price for change over or spare part. study

So I'm off the bike for a while until we can sort something out. Sad

Suzuki should do a recall as there's clearly an issue. Gus, I have little doubt you will check yours, so feedback please, kind sir!

I'm not a member of the UK sites but eBay doesn't have any starters for the 1250. Plenty for the 1200.
I'd appreciate people putting feelers out for me. Looks like Aussie replacements will be hard to come by.
Let me know if you have any tips.

An inspection won't show anything unless you pull the stator out. Who's going to do that just to have a look see?

Some in the UK had luck in taking the motor to an electrical motor specialist who re-glued the magnets in. Depends how crunched things were

Thanks. I have sent off a requst. Kewwig its a holiday here so i will go look tomorrow and see the damage. Been told some magnets are smashed so probably a long shot. Until 6 months ago this town had 2 auto elecs. The good bloke has just retired and left the dodgy one servicing our needs.

I'm kicking myself I didn't have the clunk investigated a couple of months ago.
All of you need to check out any weird starting issues asap.
Is this the first in use failure on our forum? (I guess Gus's fuel pump wins lol)

OEM Starter motors work out to be 8% of the purchase price of a new bike!
I might have found one at a wreckers for much less. He said it works and should be fine. I said mine worked last week too!
Will check it out on Fri when im in Melb. I will attempt to have mine rebuilt because I dont want any of you blokes screwed over. I'll be happy to cover my costs.

Or you could pay $850 + freight WTF.......

Thanks guys I'll check them out if I dont have any luck in Melb tomorrow. Puts Suzuki's Aussie pricing out of the ball park.

Gus, after trying to roll start the Bandit the other week I'm glad it doesn't have a kick starter or we'd all have blown knees lol

Powersports (http://www.powersportsplus.com/parts/detail/suzuki/SP-31100-18H00.html) list a starter new for USD$322.45 (they have it discounted by $144.77).

I have bought stuff from them in NZ and their prices are good. OEM Suzuki parts through Suzuki NZ are regularly 2 - 3 times the price of what I can get through the USA. (A gel seat was quoted at $1100 when I bought one off EBay for USD$187).

Given the number of people turning up with low mileage buggered starters, I suggest writing to Suzuki and complaining.

If this is a common problem why are people putting the same type back in .?
Surley a differant brand would be a better option .Its only a starter motor ,looks like all my other starter motors .Needs power and spins .

you would need to compare part numbers but I wonder if its the same starter motor as the series 2 & 1 bandit

Good point. Probably a Mitsubishi made part common to a range of engines. The part number is 31100-18H00. The same number is used across all GSF 1250s and the GSX1250FA.

Different part number. The 04 bandit is 31100-26D10. You'd need to physically compare them, but the images on the on line fiches look totally different at the business end. I'd say they are very different.

Thanks for everyone's assistance.
I picked up a used starter today. I watched them pull it out of a late 08. Feels OK. Well at least it turns! $150.
Didn't get home in time to run it up the shop but will in the morning.

*Warning*
According to thee wrecker, 1250 starters are easily the most sold "non crash damage" item.
Make of that statement what you will but I'm looking for another bike because the way I use mine doesn't give me a lot of hope for not being up for another. Twisted Evil

I wonder if it was a bad batch or earlier model problem as with the regulator problem .I guess its a case of keeping an eye on it & fingers crossed .
