Starter Clunk
First topic message reminder :
I did a search but didn't find anything.....
My B1250 has started to have a real clunk when the starter engages. I'm slightly perplexed but its consistent. Anything I can check?
Anyone know how these things work? Its going in for the 24k service next week.

Re: Starter Clunk
Thanks Gus.
There doesnt appear to be anything there that could have been making the clunk.
It's been fine since the oil change
Thank the old man who's hand you use to point things out to us too please mate.

Re: Starter Clunk
Well the new battery didn't achieve anything!
First hot start after installing and she lets me down.
The starter is cactus. Lucky I was stopped at a bike shop when she wouldn't turn over again.
Couldn't even turn with a booster battery.
Mechanic says its starter brushes most likely. Unusual at 25,000km but not impossible and the starter has been used a lot in those km's.
This had better not be the start of ongoing built to a price maintenance. Others beware!

Re: Starter Clunk
If the starter is like i expect you can extend the leads on the brushes to use the last 15% of the brush which is normally unused .Of cause it
better to replace the brushes with new ones but if you carnt get hold of any the right size you will get another 4 m0nths .
Something strange at them gone at 25,000 though .

I'll keep that tip in mind if parts not held in stock. He thought he'd have a set. Probably similar to 1200
Re: Starter Clunk
Ok just got a call from the shop.
The verdict is that all the magnets inside have either cracked and are about to or fallen away from the casing.
This just causes a magnetic lockup when exposed to current.
The shop has never seen a starter in that condition and isnt prepared to guess at a price for change over or spare part.
So I'm off the bike for a while until we can sort something out.
Built to a price is starting to shit me

Suzuki should do a recall as there's clearly an issue. Gus, I have little doubt you will check yours, so feedback please, kind sir!

I'm not a member of the UK sites but eBay doesn't have any starters for the 1250. Plenty for the 1200.
I'd appreciate people putting feelers out for me. Looks like Aussie replacements will be hard to come by.
Let me know if you have any tips.
Re: Starter Clunk
An inspection won't show anything unless you pull the stator out. Who's going to do that just to have a look see?
Paging Dhula..........
Paging Dhula..........
Re: Starter Clunk
Some in the UK had luck in taking the motor to an electrical motor specialist who re-glued the magnets in. Depends how crunched things were

Re: Starter Clunk
Thanks. I have sent off a requst. Kewwig its a holiday here so i will go look tomorrow and see the damage. Been told some magnets are smashed so probably a long shot. Until 6 months ago this town had 2 auto elecs. The good bloke has just retired and left the dodgy one servicing our needs.paul wrote:you could give this mob a try 2WA

I'm kicking myself I didn't have the clunk investigated a couple of months ago.
All of you need to check out any weird starting issues asap.
Is this the first in use failure on our forum? (I guess Gus's fuel pump wins lol)
Re: Starter Clunk
OEM Starter motors work out to be 8% of the purchase price of a new bike!
I might have found one at a wreckers for much less. He said it works and should be fine. I said mine worked last week too!
Will check it out on Fri when im in Melb. I will attempt to have mine rebuilt because I dont want any of you blokes screwed over. I'll be happy to cover my costs.
Or you could pay $850 + freight WTF.......

Re: Starter Clunk
No wonder you see wreckers pulling apart bikes that look quite good .Those prices are B.S.Bring back a kick lever or a crank lever .

Thanks guys I'll check them out if I dont have any luck in Melb tomorrow. Puts Suzuki's Aussie pricing out of the ball park.xpalan wrote:Just checked out Bikebandit.com and for a 2009 listed bandit 1250 price for complete starter motor is approx $430.00 . hope this might be usefull ?
Gus, after trying to roll start the Bandit the other week I'm glad it doesn't have a kick starter or we'd all have blown knees lol
Re: Starter Clunk
Want to see what a stuffed starter looks like?
Cracked magnet and others unglued and moved
Look how far a couple have shifted. All are unbonded/glued

Re: Starter Clunk
Powersports (http://www.powersportsplus.com/parts/detail/suzuki/SP-31100-18H00.html) list a starter new for USD$322.45 (they have it discounted by $144.77).
I have bought stuff from them in NZ and their prices are good. OEM Suzuki parts through Suzuki NZ are regularly 2 - 3 times the price of what I can get through the USA. (A gel seat was quoted at $1100 when I bought one off EBay for USD$187).
Given the number of people turning up with low mileage buggered starters, I suggest writing to Suzuki and complaining.

Re: Starter Clunk
If this is a common problem why are people putting the same type back in .?
Surley a differant brand would be a better option .Its only a starter motor ,looks like all my other starter motors .Needs power and spins .

you would need to compare part numbers but I wonder if its the same starter motor as the series 2 & 1 bandit

Good point. Probably a Mitsubishi made part common to a range of engines. The part number is 31100-18H00. The same number is used across all GSF 1250s and the GSX1250FA.
