Grease please .
While i was replacing some bolts today i undid the gear leaver pivot bolt .To my surprise the centre grease groove was dry .I've pushed grease in from
the outside many times but it seems you need to remove the bolt to do a good job .
Ive never liked the "hole" in the pivot shaft either so while i was there i used a dummy bolt head to hide it .

Is this the first thing you have taken off and replaced without painting it black Gus?
You sure about that new bolt head? Looks out of place to me. Love your mods though

Gus - I took your advice and took the gear lever pivot apart and greased it as I was fiddling around with the linkage trying to get a little more foot room anyway.
My gearchange has always been good but I couldn't believe how much slicker it felt when I rode it after greasing up the pivot bolt on the shift lever.

The mechanic at my local dealership told me to use a light lubricant such as WD40 instead of grease, that way you avoid grit build up? When he took mine off it was dry as the sahara but since spraying with lube the shifting has been much much better.

Re: Grease please .
You can use CRC white lithium grease in a can to do these jobs without having to pull it all apart. Just an idea. It's also heat and water resistant
http://www.crcind.com.au/white-lithium-grease
It is great for clutch/brake perches as well as side stand, centre stand etc. Just don't try and use it as chain lubrication. I've tried it and it doesn't have the anti fling quality of proper chain lubes.

That sounds good .I think you need to fill the grove with grease and then go the can every week or so , Wd 40 just runs out of the grove .

Re: Grease please .
Mine had barely a smear of grease on it - I'm happy enough to pull it apart once in a while to re-do it. I'm not sure anything you spray on will penetrate right inside to the pivot surface.

Re: Grease please .
The lithium grease is very sticky. I doubt you'd need to reapply every week, it goes on white and as you work it goes grey. Great stuff and smells a bit like dencorub
I initially thought it may be a cheap chain lube, but as stated earlier it doesn't stick that well.

Good call Gus. Back in the day. most bearing surfaces like pivots and linkages had grease nipples fitted. Make sure you clean the bearing surfaces thoroughly before lubricating. I use a top-quality moly-be-damned grease, but Castrol general purpose grease is probably just as good in this application. The lithium stuff is great for sliding alloy surfaces, maybe less so for steel.
Truck, the wheel bearings are sealed units with the grease inside. They cant be deconstructed or repacked. Certainly check them and if there is any stiction or rumbles, replace the whole bearing. (In fact, if you find one buggered wheel bearing, change 'em both).
Make a day of it, pull the swingarm linkages apart and replace / lubricate the bearings / pivots, then do the same with the steering head. You will be pleasantly surprised at the improvements in ride quality.
