O.k looking for any Ideas as having just bought My new GSF1250S two weeks ago , the wife and I are looking at riding to melb and catching the ferry to Tasmania , Most likely mid to late feb 2012 . Has anyone got recommendations for nice places and roads to go and see.

We are planning to do this trip at some point next year (I have to pay for the wedding first though) its meant to be great riding country. Make sure you take your Hema motorbike atlas with the 200 great rides. there are quite a few in Tassie.

Re: Tasmania Trip 2012
Read somewhere just recently about crap efforts the ferry guys have done in strapping down bikes when the seas are forecast to be rough. Might have been Roadrider mag. Bikes were damaged, ie tank dents, fork damage, etc. It has put me off taking my bike on the ferry if I was contemplating a trip to Tas. The alternative, specialist bike transport, adds quite a few $$$ to the trip but probably guarantees the bike gets there as it left the mainland.

Spirit of Tassy - bike tie down
We went over (by car) last Easter and took these shots of bikes being secured. The crew seemed to do a pretty good job from what I could see.
It was mentioned in a post about a year ago that the crew will let you secure your bike yourself.
I was also looking for a better solution for securing my bike on our trailer not liking the idea of compression the front shocks, ended up buying the soft strap version of these from KYA Racing:
Mind you our road train is getting a little big now:
Regards
Barry

There is not a lot of cheap accom , in Tassie . A lot of the old pubs have gone or gone up market .Losts of free camping which saved us $100 most
nights .Thats $700 a week !!! I dont see the sense in paying $100 to sleep .Camp, walk to pub walk back .

Re: Tasmania Trip 2012
A couple of mates and I are going over on the 1st December.
Staying 1 night in Strahan caravan park $125
2 nights in a CP in Mornington Hobart $250
1 night in a CP in St Helens $108 (would be $120 but I get a discount)
Total each is $161 or just over $40 a night.
As you can tell we're not going for long

Re: Tasmania Trip 2012
Tassie is wonderful for riding but a total rip off for accommodation unless you camp. If you camp and know where to camp it can be great and cheap but don't try it with cheap tents and poor equipment, warm sleeping bags AND a good cover for your bike, its change of weather is legendary and can kill. Never ride for two hours after dawn or two hours before dusk unless you plan to become acquainted with the road kill or become part of it.
Sadly Tassie has changed for the worse, thanks to the Chardonnay set from the Mainland who have ruined so much of this great Country, may they die out quickly and painfully.
Have a great trip.

that's $125 a night shared between 3 of us, so for $41 i'd rather have a comfortable bed and not have to worry about a swag to add to the luggage.
We did consider pubs, but the pub in Strahan was going to cost us $170 a night for one room and I think we needed 2 of them.
Anyway I can't wait we're off in less than 12 hours
