Carb & Valves
How often do you get your carbs balanced? I got mine done 10k klm ago and the needle still doesn't budge when idling…
Also, how often do you do your valve clearances? I got mine done 10k klm ago with the carbs.
Cheers

Re: Carb & Valves
I only do the carbs when I notice it affects the idle/ride-ability as for valves, it's probably best to stick to the recommended service interval. Which appears to be 12,000km.

Re: Carb & Valves
IMO check the valves at about 12000km intervals(I do all my servicing at 5000km intervals cause my math is shit, so for me it will be 10000kms))
Check carb balance at the same time (if you need to adjust the valves, there is a good chance the balance will need adjusting as well)
If you never ever rev the engine above 4000 rpm then there is a chance you may be able to let the valves go until 20000km, but where is the fun in that.
As for the 1200 (air/oil cooled) bandit 12000km intervals being screw and nut sounds about right to me.

depends on which book your going by (user or service) and which part of that book you are reading when it comes to the 1250 (h2o cooled) bandit. One option is 12000km intervals, the other option is 24000km intervals. Take you pick but as they are shim under bucket (read PITA to change) the 24000km interval sounds kinda OK to me. As the engine can rev to 9-10 gg's then I'd err on the side of caution and go with the 12000km interval until I could be happy with letting them go longer. (I've seen an engine that gets an absolute flogging - car engine but very well maintained - at 180000km without a need to change shims since new)re-cycled wrote:it's probably best to stick to the recommended service interval. Apparently Yamaha are recommending valves at 40,000km on some bikes. Sounds a bit long to me but built with the right materials could be quite reasonable.
Re: Carb & Valves
Sounds good.
Still dont no or heard of ANYONE who has had to adjust a shim on a 1250 motor . Anyone ?????????

Re: Carb & Valves
If you go on over to Max Zuk or TWT you'll find one or two people that have changed shims on the 1250 engine.
I've checked mine just before the warranty run out last year and all was good. Gota be careful when doing the clearance checks tho as it is easy to get it wrong IMO

Yeah the FJR1300 has valves every 40,000km, standard service interval is 10,000km and according to the service manual and owners manual, engine oil is 20W40.
even when i pulled the head off at 149,000km, the clearances were still in spec. a few fjr owners have had to change the odd shim or 2, but from my observation, no-one seems to have to do that until 80,000 or 120,000km. it's a bastard of a job to do, there isn't much room at all under that fuel tank and everything is so tightly packed in there...
Working on the motor itself is a breeze, just getting to it...

I'll leave her go for another couple of thousand kilometers.
