Post  Mars Tue 18 Jan 2011, 7:27 pm

FA's due for its 1st service (1000km) and got a quote for $340 from Peter Stevensons in Melbourne.

Wondering if this sounds about right?

According to my manual which says Check, adjust, clean and lubricate chain. It sounds expensive to me. But i'm anti dealer as you know
so it might be just me.

Thanks guys. Sounded pricey to me for a first service... but will need to pay this time for the convinience of dropping her off in Melbourne CBD and picking her up in the arvo.
See if I cant find an alternative for nesxt one.

p.s Last Sunday I rode Melb, Kinglake, Whittlesea, Whallan then return the same way and got to say.. she really hides her weight through the twisties. Let the affair begin.

Sounds about right for a dealer in absolutely prime real estate in a major city and the rents they command. I negotiated a free 1st service with the deal.

Ask them for a outline of what they are going to do on the first service that justifies that kind of cost.
IMO it should be about $150-$200 which is for oil (~$30 depending on what they use), filter (~$25) and labour (~$100 per hour) to check, adjust and tighten things around the bike, and then a little bit more added on for sundries like grease and cleaners and dumping of old oils etc.

If you interrogate the service manual it is contradictory about when the valve clearances should be done. One part says the first time they need checking is at 24000kms and then every 24000kms after that. Another part of the manual says that they should be checked at 1000kms (initial service) and then every 12000kms after that.

If they are going to check the valves during the initial service then the price you have been given is about right I recon.

I ram mineral to the 12,000 service. Bike was still improving so wasnt in any hurry to change over. Thought it was still improving engine wize up to about 20,000km. Have Motul full synth in now. Used to like Mobil 1 full synth in the RF900R. Cant seem to get it now.

Dinosaurs and cockroaches are still running around in my crankcase at ~14000kms. I've no intention to change at this point in time. For me personally I can't see the cost -v- benefit for the change.

Mars, my 1K service was about $270, which included an oil dump. Motul oil, sorry, can't say exactly what type, it was a blend from memory. I'd have to check the reciept located in the shed I've just spent a week cleaning... Suzuki dealer in Keilor RD Niddre, I'm very happy with scoot and dealings.

I have had my first service done at the dealer (Lloyd Chapman in Mount Lawley WA) where i bought my 1250s about a month ago. Cost $180 .. for an oil / filter change and general check. And thats more than enough for a simple service i believe.

I think it's more "unscrupulous business owners don't miss a trick". Dropping your used oil off at the tip for recycling is free.

Do you know anyone who cuts their own firewood? Used bike oil is perfect for bar lube on a chainsaw. You might even score a beer when you drop it off.

Usually not for amounts above 20 litres.
Most businesses will have a lot more than that to drop off, and that is if they do it themselves. Most auto places will contract the work out to someone that has the appropriate gear to remove bulk amounts and this costs money.

That and the fact you are probably paying for the TA/floor sweeper to pick up the full waste oil pan once the technician has drained the oil and take it to the waste oil drum/container out the back and then clean up the mess on the floor, the pan, what he dripped/dropped on the way etc etc etc. Then there will be the rags, the disposal of the old oil filter, disposal of the empty oil container/drum. It adds up to be quite a bit of stuff that needs to be disposed of in an environmentally friendly way (if they do it properly)

Yay, lets add all those contaminants, metal shavings, acids, fuels and any other crap in the old motorcycle engine oil into our old car engine.

Better off getting the $9 homebrand oil from woolies IMO

What Old motor cycle engine. How do you under line old. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Ive been running my cars on the stuff for years and the motor is about
the only thing i havent had trouble with . Mine you i better add the drive at the moment is a 1980 Datun 200b.Stop laughing .
If the oil i'm taking out of a 2009 Bandit which might have only done 5.oookls is full of metal shavings i'm in serious trouble with tha bandit IMHO.
A car for me normally costs between $250 (Datsun ) and $2000 so the damage has probably already been done. Not a good idea for everyone
i realise that. Very Happy Got a tank picture for you Dhula ill put it in vids. (Under Coffee & scones )

Thats the worst part, there is an oil recycling drop off point about 2 klm from the dealer, and I know here in Canberra its " free to drop off your used oil
