Burn mark on Exhaust from Cat.
I'm sure we've all got one, if you haven't it will eventually happen. The cat on the bandit gets so hot that it leaves a 1-2 inch burn mark ring around the exhaust. It's really in my opinion a discolouring of the stainless because of the extremes in temp from the cat converter.
Does everyone have this problem, as I have noticed it on quite a few bandit 1250's. I tried putting a warranty claim in, Suzuki advised they did honour a few however they stopped because they advised they have no fix for it other that a new headers and cat (all one piece), they said it's just a cosmetic thing and it does not effect the performance of the bike.
I'm not fazed it's there, just aesthetically annoyed.
Your thoughts ?

Mine was one of "the few" they did. Second one went longer before burning. I think they stopped replacement because they would have to replace every one! Its poor form from Suzuki to make a feature of the exhaust then ignore an obvious design flaw. I think you may still be able to do some arm twisting if you have a good dealer but the replacement will burn eventually.

Try sanding wet with 800g then 1200g w/d paper then a metal polish. If it looks like its working you can play around with different grades.Sounds too easy, maybe the marks on mine where not as bad.

Re: Burn mark on Exhaust from Cat.
I'm curious, someone (Reado I think) posted how the middle accidental fell out of his cat' , does this cure the burn mark, as it should no longer get hot there?

Re: Burn mark on Exhaust from Cat.
i got mine a while back.
i kept polishing it off everytime it came back.
but after about 20 times, i just gave up on it. as long as my headers are nice and shiny, im happy.

Re: Burn mark on Exhaust from Cat.
I'm curious about how the cat ran away from the exhaust because it was too hot. If it does the bolt, followed by some 1200 grit my pipe will look like new.
Is it really as simple as hitting on the head with a knockerama to make it run away.

Re: Burn mark on Exhaust from Cat.
Would fitting a PAIRS removal kit help with this?
(surely having no after-fire in the exhaust would lower exhaust temps)

I'm catless. was starting to get the burn look, so fixed the problem .
about 4-5hours with a hammer, long screwdriver and small jimmy bar.
its long 4-5hours working through the back of the header.
The cat is made from steel.
shit late 4 for work. see ya

Just ignoring the stain one of those couldn't be bothered things. It's a bit like polished rims, sure they look nice I polished mine about 18 months ago, now I want to respray them nice Matt silver colour as I couldn't be bothered polishing them, don't like colored black wheels

Re: Burn mark on Exhaust from Cat.
Has anyone considered ceramic coating their headers and cat? It sounds expensive to me but apparently can be done in many different colors and has the benefit of reducing heat considerably.

It may be a way of fixing the stain issue.

Re: Burn mark on Exhaust from Cat.
Just did a search and found a guy with a CBR600 who double ceramic coated his whole exhaust system for $330. I don't think I want this kind of expense but it could be a great way to personalize your bike - imagine all black exhaust with a carbon slip on. It sounds like cost is around the mid three hundreds probably would depend on whether it is dual single four or two cylinder etc.

I like the straw colour the system turns between scrubs with Autosol.
Only clean it to get the baked on dirt, bugs, children and small dogs off.

Agreed. I just thought I would put the idea out there for those who might be interested in this as an option -they have coatings that also keep the chrome look.
