Re: Lithium Batteries
I fitted one a few weeks back. Only because my electric mower needed a new battery so seemed like a good time to get a Lithium. On the brand all I can say its green and 2.5kg lighter than the stocker.V17R wrote:looks like I may be up for a new battery soon and have heard about the lithium types

Bike starts well is all I can say about it.

Re: Lithium Batteries
Yes I tried one, and no, I wont do it again , Didn't last .
I do not believe they have them sorted yet . Twice as expensive ,half the weight ,half the life span .
Well that's what I experienced .

Re: Lithium Batteries
I got into a bit of lambasting on another forum giving my views of lithium's, so I'll try to be a bit more careful and not upset those trekkies that have been assimilated into the Borg Collective
The latest Lithium-Ion Phosphate (LiFePO4) are much better than previous versions, they definitely have weight advantage over a AGM/GEL lead acid battery, and performance is much better as long as they are treated correctly, they can provide a much better starting current and last longer than a GEL, but your bike electrics need to suit their parameters, overcharging them will definitely cause premature failure. From what I've read they seem to have a sleep mode if it's a bit cold overnight, the recommendation is to leave the ignition and/or lights on for a couple of minutes to get a small charge flowing through the bike and then hit the starter. One of the biggest reasons they fail is that they cannot be recharged using any of the standard chargers and trickle chargers, even the u-bute CTEKs will upset them with the desulphurization mode, they need a specific charger such as: www.ctek.com/au/en/chargers/LITHIUM%20XS
They will outlast a lead acid by a hefty margin if looked after correctly and the price being asked probably matches their better performance but for me I don't have a need for the reduced size and weight or it's extra oomph.

I read that somewhere recently; batteries don't die - they are killed

I've got one in the drz. Works pretty well when it isn't discharged. If it is discharged you need to jumper it to a good battery so it twisters enough charge for my ctek to pick up that the battery isn't stuffed and start charging

Re: Lithium Batteries
The Gixxer went 7 years on the OEM battery.
The Bandit went 8 years on the OEM battery.
In both cases this was despite extended periods of disuse/standing.
Gixxer battery was replaced with Shorai LiPo… works well, and if the blurb is credible, then apart from the massive weight reduction; it should be better suited to the trackie life style (sits around a fair bit).
Bandit was replaced with a sealed Yuasa…from memory the cost was about half of the LiPo, and if I get 8 years per previous Japanese battery (MF brand?…haven’t seen available retail), then I will be very happy.

I replaced the oem in my KTM yesterday because my camping light battery (aka the best clapped out bike battery in the shed) went and fritzed and the oem battery was pretty piss weak from new (AGM - 8 ah - 120 cca - $200 - WTF??)
Lipo starting at $180 and going well upwards, 10ah - 220 cca
Motobatt $100 AGM - 8.6ah - 140cca
MF $55 delivered AGM - 8.6ah - 190cca - this seemed a no brainer to me and the MF turned up yesterday. The oem was lethargic and would take three of four turns over TDC to fire. The new MF cranks good and proper and it fires on the first or second turn.
Tons of MF's on ebay now at kickarse cheap prices eg - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/GEL-YT12A-BS-YTX12A-BS-Battery-For-Suzuki-GSXR-750-1000-GSF1250-Bandit-GSX1300R-/141961162089?hash=item210d8b6d69:g:VV0AAOSwiYFXEdQ3
Lifetime of the current MF'S? Don't know yet, but at $55 wot does it matter?

I'm in the same boat with the MV but the price matters when you have to remove the tank, air box and front cowlings just to get to the battery. Bloody Italians

don't say you didn't know what you were getting into, we all know their bikes are fun to ride but a nightmare otherwise

Re: Lithium Batteries
Have you tried one of those multi-step chargers like the CTEK Gus ? The thing that kills the Lithiums that we mentioned earlier - the desulphurization mode - can actually help revive a near dead lead-acid battery by removing the gunk that accumulates on the plates. And sometimes they are just too far gone to resurrect.gus wrote:Ok then ,what about gel batteries .
