Hi ya all.
I don't currently have a Bandit and get around on a '99vtr1000. However this may change as I have spied a 1996 1200 "S series" for what seems fairly cheap with only 40,000k on the clock. It looks fairly clean and has a small hole in the fairing behind the left indicator, but I thought I would nakedise it anyway.
From what I hear these things are fairly bullet proof, but is there anything to look out for bandit wise with the older versions? This one is about two hours from me on the Sunshine coast, so a quick look is a bit difficult, but the asking price makes me think just do it!
I love the Honda Mmmmmmm VTwin rumble, but it's a bit too cramped ( for me) for anything more than a quick blast through the hills. So this would suit the longer trips and who knows, I can only really justify one bike.

G'day 1w, welcome along
I know the 1200 motor & box is good. My beast is the last of the 1200's, an "06"

Welcome aboard.
Keep the VTR as its a different beast to the Bandit and you'll miss it.
A few of us have V-Twins as well as a bandit. They're a good bike but seen to make you want "something else" as well.
My VTR is a 2000 model and I find it plenty roomy for my 184cm frame.

Welcome aboard 1WD.. Take in all the advise. And then just go and do what YOU really want to do. Then ask questions. The 1200 was, and still is a great power plant.
ps. Have you ridden a Bandit yet ?

Ha ha, isn't that all bikes though. - How is Scarlett? Changed out those auto CCTs yet or did she come with manuals?2wheelsagain wrote:Welcome aboard.

The VTR does sound like a tuff bike which pretty much contradicts its looks (Teal) and size. I do have trouble on longer trips on it, and therefore the idea of a Bandit for something more upright appeals (as does the price of this particular one).

The old Bandits are fine. Motor wise totally unbreakable. Just check fork seals and no oil leaks. Exhausts do rot around the collector where the mid pipe joins. They can also be a bit twitchy and under sprung on the front

Mate Scarlett is much better now and I have a pair of Krieger CCT's in the shed waiting to go in.
Longer trips on an older VTR is a contradiction The fuel light comes on bang on 190km
The Bandit will run away and hide before the VTR gets wound up on the highway (GSF1250 anyway) but the VTR is quick in its element. Thats why I reckon you'll miss it. They're two different bikes.

Thanks, I'll look out for that stuff. But getting there to have a look is still the issue!

Maybe you could find a 1200 at a dealers to test ride first. I bought my 1200 without even seeing it. Never regretted it. Then had a 1250, which was better again.

Welcome. I had a 1991 GSXR-1100. Bullet-proof motors mate. Listen for a rattling cam chain. Not sure about the frame on those, but most guys swear by them.

As it turned out, I had arranged to go and have a look on Sunday but the wife reminded me we had a bbq with friends that day, and what do you know? Sunday arvo I get a text saying Bike sold. Bugger. It was a 96model and had 40000K on it for $2500. So I am on the look out for something similar, as I love the look of them naked and it seems pretty simple to do.

Thanks for that. Does that mean a new tensioner or stuffed chain? I just did the tensioners in my VTR. Being a twin there are two to consider. (That twin grin can turn to double trouble!)
And I love the look of that 1200 slab of a motor

Bugger! I'm sure something will turn up for a similar price. The old oil-cooleed motors are strong. I remember a guy had an M model GSXR like my old bike, and it pumped out close to 300 bhp, turboed of course, with no engine mods except for lo-comp pistons, a bigger oil cooler and stiffer clutch springs. The bottom end of those, including the gearbox, are tough as. Typical Japanese over-engineering!

Have seen that one, he has redone the add, better photos this time. 72000k? I know its probably not huge for a 1200 but a bit more than I'd like, still worth a look.

72000 is nothing. As long as it has been regularly serviced.
