Not from thieves MM - I'd put the seat back on!!
Seriously though, my toolkit bag has worn a hole in itself, so that's one layer of insulation compromised. You'd be wanting to make sure the cover on the +ve terminal was never going to fail.
You've clearly got other ideas for the space at the back.

With the Tomcat and the puncture repair kit in the back there is no room for the tool kit. I guess I could lay a sheet of inner-tube rubber over it.Ewok1958 wrote:Not from thieves MM - I'd put the seat back on!!

Apart from the possible electrical short problem what about fumes off the battery? or causing the battery to overheat?

Re: Do you think this is safe?
Given the consequences, if say a spanner was to short circuit the battery terminals, I'd have to rate the risk as unacceptable.
Just saw your 2nd post; battery (if standard) is a sealed AGM type, so no fumes.

If you don't have the ABS version, you could always fabricate a new battery box that lowers the battery and then make a neat storage box that sits on top of it. There is quite a bit of spare space on non-ABS Bandits and I've read posts where people have done this.

Re: Do you think this is safe?
Yes battery is standard.
This is a GSX so ABS is also standard
Do you think a layer of inner-tube rubber would make it safe??

Re: Do you think this is safe?
A better idea would be to expand the size of the tail storage, I can't remember who it was but there is a post about doing this. I sure one of the guys will recall who it was. The result was a very handy increase which I am sure will do the job.

Might look into that for the long term, right now i'm looking for a solution ready for the Cowra tripDekenai wrote:A better idea would be to expand the size of the tail storage, I can't remember who it was but there is a post about doing this. Re: Do you think this is safe?
For the short term, a layer of insulating rubber ought to do the trick. Clarke Rubber sell some wide stuff.

Re: Do you think this is safe?
I'd be inclined to use a high density closed cell foam like this polyethylene, we get parts packed with it, it can come in thin sheets.
http://www.foambymail.com/PE17-_1/polyethylene-foam-sheets-1-7lb-white.html
or if you had an old closed cell sleeping mat that would be good, I bought something like that about a centimetre thick modify a car seat once.

OK short term solution. I'd go down to the motorcycle wreckers and look for the top of a battery box that fits and extends say an inch down the sides of the battery and fit under the rubber strap. This will retain it make sure it doesn't go anywhere.

Ha!
There's dampening knobs bolted to the inside of the frame. I took mine out ! Left me with enough room for the tool kit and a puncture repair kit.

Re: Do you think this is safe?
Ok but im trying to get Tomcat mini compressor, toolkit and puncture repair kit under the seat.
Before I bought the compressor I could get the toolkit and puncture repair kit in easily.

Re: Do you think this is safe?
Ok I see what you mean. I guess they are there to stop vibrations into the rear handle.
Removing them would probably make all the difference.
Only thing is it looks like I have to completely remove the tail section to get to the 2 rear bolts. Not something I was planning on doing between now and Thursday, but you never know

Re: Do you think this is safe?
Madmax, I just removed my rear vibration knobs. took 5 mins. All you need is a 10mm ratchet ring spanner. No need to remove anything first.

This might sound silly but put the Tomcat air compressor in your luggage, at least for the trip and worry about it later.madmax wrote:Ok but im trying to get Tomcat mini compressor, toolkit and puncture repair kit under the seat.

Re: Do you think this is safe?
That is an option, but eventually I want this setup for everyday riding regardless of what luggage I'm carrying, if any.Jimmy the Boy wrote:This might sound silly but put the Tomcat air compressor in your luggage, at least for the trip and worry about it later.madmax wrote:Ok but im trying to get Tomcat mini compressor, toolkit and puncture repair kit under the seat.

Anyway I'll have a look at removing those dampeners tomorrow and see how that goes.

Re: Do you think this is safe?
I fitted two HID ballasts plus relays on the frame under the fairing.
I reckon there is heaps of room for other small items (probably not an esky though)!!
Just to be serious for a moment. Would the compressor fit underneath the battery?

Doesn't sound like anything will fit under the battery with the ABS Dave

On ABS models the hydraulic unit lives under the battery near the upper shock mount, just in the area where the reservoir on a GSXR1000 shock would go.

Re: Do you think this is safe?
Thank guys problem all sorted.
Removing the dampeners has given me enough room to get the compressor and repair kit in the back of the tail and the tool kit under the seat lock
