synthetic oil question?? Empty synthetic oil question??

Post  fat pete Sat 21 Sep 2013, 5:10 pm

so before i joined this forum i had read thru fast larrys suzuki bandit faq,now i was suprised when i got to the oil section and it said to be wary of using synthetic oils in your bandit?

ive never used synthetic in any of my old bikes and i certainly never used it in my old shovelhead harley, ive always been keen on the penrite range of oils and that has never let me down, but as the suzuki is a hell of a lot newer than the old shovel i was going to go to the synthetic and after reading thru all the service history with the bandit it seems the fella i bought it off has been using it for quite a while now on the bandit..

is anyone using the synthetic oil on there bandits?

does anyone know of any problems with using synthetic.?

if i was to go back to penrite mineral oils besides changing the oil filter and dumping the oil outve the engine is there any way to make sure every bit of the synthetic is out?

does it matter if theres a tiny amount of the synthetic oil left in there?

I used Motul semi in my 1200 & currently use Ipone semi in my 1250  / once they were well bedded & run in /
Unless you are stripping a motor down , there will always be some old oil left in the motor ..................which doesn't hurt at all .
If it is motorcycle specific oil , I wouldn't have thought there should be a problem using full synthetic , but I found for the difference in cost of semi to full synthetic , there were no advantages .
Suzuki recommend mineral oil, but I think the semi gives that bit extra protection for how I use the bike & if like me you change it at the recommended 6000 km intervals .

As far as I have read on this forum and others, full synthetic is not recommended due to clutch slippage. I use Penrite HPR GAS 10-50w Semi Synthetic. It's recommended by Penrite for bikes.

I noticed today that Penrite are making oils specifically marketed for bikes

http://www.penriteoil.com.au/products.php?id_categ=7&id_products=268

from memory it was only about $32 for 4 litres at Auto Barn.

I've always used Motul 7100 - 100% synthetic
http://m.motul.com/au/en/products/39

Issue for clutches in motorbikes is due to the 'wet clutch' setup. Ie oil in crankcase is also used to lube the clutch and transmission.
It's not about synthetic or non synthetic. The issue arrises where friction inhibiting additives are used. This is the case for most car oils. This will likely cause slippage of the clutch and therefore cause additional wear and disability issues.

Quality oils made for motorcycles do not include these additives regardless of mineral or synthetic makeup.
