Oxford Hot Grips fitting question
I've been fitting some Oxford grips this arvo.
Mine has a square switch block with on/off + heat setting buttons that fits on a plate (supplied) that screws under the clutch lever bolts.
Wondering if you guys have had success with the double sided tape to stick the switch box to the plate, and whether that has been strong enough to hold over time, rain etc.
I would prefer a screw-on but don't want to send a screw into the tiny holes I see in the back of the switch block!
Thanks GG

Re: Oxford Hot Grips fitting question
The screws that come with it work just fine in the tiny holes. I have done them with and without the pad. Doesn't really make a lot of difference either way

Re: Oxford Hot Grips fitting question
Thanks kewig. Ah...I'd better have a look for the tiny screws. Didn't see them in the pack. That would be good..
Most of the fitting went okay but I messed up the right hand throttle tube (under the original grip) that twists. It has a bevelled shoulder at the inner end that I tried to remove to let the hot grip slip right on but I cracked the tube. I will need a new one - ah well! Hope it is not too hard to fit.
Cheers GG

Re: Oxford Hot Grips fitting question
just did this 2 weeks ago - the wee screws work fine
is funny - I thought of 'skinning' away the beveled bit on the throttle side but just left it - as in I now see this 5mm of plastic before the grip starts - thought I had buggered up .... but feel better after reading your post!!
sure it'll all work out fine for yourself - it always does!

Re: Oxford Hot Grips fitting question
I had the double sided tape on my Oxford controller for nearly a year and it was still fine when I removed it.
If its good double sided tape it will be shower proof, body mouldings on car door are attached with double sided tape.
I ground the bevelled edge off with a dremel, no issues.
Recently I had to remove the left hand grip and glue it on as it was turning on the handlebar

Re: Oxford Hot Grips fitting question
Thanks rosstrom and madmax.
I have a Dremel, bit didn't think of it and I am paying for being careless. You know.......doing something you know will probably go wrong, and it does:oops:
I have to fit a new throttle tube. Anyone know if this is a job for a specialist or is it straightforward (with care)?
Thanks GG

Very easy. Loosen the throttle adjuster completely, undo the 2 screws holding the two halves of the switchgear plus the one holding the cables to the switchgear body. The cable ends pop out easily and it will be obvious to you how it works. Sliding a cable tie under them helps. Put a smear of grease on the bar too.

Re: Oxford Hot Grips fitting question
I stuffed my throttle tube when I put the grips on... put the glue on the tube and pushed the grips over it but it didn't go all the way! The glue held and the only way I could get the grips off was to break the tube from the inside... (very carefully).. . I ordered a new one from the USA and it arrived pretty quickly and much cheaper than I could pick one up for here. In the mean time I found something from a bike wreckers that did the job (with a little engineering ingenuity) until the new one arrived... When I put the grips on the new throttle tube I made certain that all the ridges were well and truly sanded off so that the grips slid VERY smoothly over it...
A good idea too is to have the grips only turn 'on' when the ignition is 'on'.. . I know of those that have had them 'hard' wired into the system and forgotten to turn them off after a ride... come back and no battery ...(also prevents idiots from turning it on when you're away from the bike with the same result)

Re: Oxford Hot Grips fitting question
Thanks kewwig and Bhoffo for great and helpful advice.
Yes, I have wired off a 'switched' (ign) connection from my power board thanks. It all looks pretty good. Very neat and strong.
I mounted the Oxford switch block near the clutch lever on the Oxford bracket. It went on as solid as a rock. I used the small screws (thankyou, I found them) plus the sticky tape....Solid!
I was going to try for a genuine Suzuki throttle tube tomorrow from Suziparts. I have no idea of cost yet.
I have also been fiddling with the right hand hot grip, sliding it onto the deceased throttle tube and trying to find the best angle/position for the grip power cable outlet. Think I found it.
Cheers GG

Re: Oxford Hot Grips fitting question
Be careful with the placement on the throttle side that the electrical cable doesn't catch on anything at full throttle. A judiciously placed cable tie will keep the cable from snagging. You do not want a Bandit with a stuck open throttle!

Re: Oxford Hot Grips fitting question
Tks Kewwig. A stuck throttle would be.....well exhilarating!
The exit point and cable from the Oxford is a bit cumbersome, but I will make sure it all rotates freely, also to not fatigue the cable.
With fitting the new throttle tube. Is there any re-adjusting of the throttle required? I will mark to position of everything before I remove.

I'm not impressed with the quality of any Oxford gear I've had.
What other and better grips available?

Still using the oxford grips, but there are other types available including internal ones

Heated handgrips are primarily designed for women.
Note: If you have evidence of riding in snow/ice, I may let you get away with them.

I have worn out one set of Oxfords and had one module fail due to water ingress. I am happy with the quality and they survive Wellington winters quite well. Always interested in something better, of course!

Re: Oxford Hot Grips fitting question
Probably .
You can buy(I did) the heated grips for $5 (ebay) and they look exactly the same .Someone puts a better switch in and a resistor total cost $20?
then charges $45 .Good on them , I thought about making some ,then went and feed the ducks instead .I did a wright up if are interested .
put in "heated grips " in search box .2 sections .
I think heated grips are for girls also , give me frost bite hands ,no braking ,the shakes and pain anyday .
Golf ,now there's a girls game if ever there was one .

Re: Oxford Hot Grips fitting question
I don't have have heated grips but the commute to work at minus eight (sometimes worse) in Canberra's winter is enough to tempt me.
Go to go ... my dress needs ironing so I can go to work.

Heated grips means I can wear my much more comfortable summer gloves for more months of the year.
It means I don't have to carry two pairs when its cold in the morning and warm in the afternoon.

Re: Oxford Hot Grips fitting question
I work in the snowfields. Heated grips are for when I've got to make a dash home (hours away) after work at night and back stupidly early in the morning, entirely after dark, in shit weather, any random weekend of the season.
Its a safety thing, staves off hypothermia, which makes one less attentive, and slows reaction time. I don't need to recover from the ride too, as I usually need to recover from the day. Heated grips? My "luxury" item for this year. I must be getting old.

Re: Oxford Hot Grips fitting question
I have the 'under your original grips' type of heated grip and they work great. I don't use them often but when I need them I am so glad that I've got them.
seats ... heat them as well and say goodbye to kidney damage due to the cold.
